
Umami welcomes applications for 2025 intake, deadline on Aug 13
MIRI (Aug 5): The Miri Food Entrepreneur Programme (Umami) is making a return this year, offering aspiring food entrepreneurs from underserved communities a chance to turn their culinary skills into sustainable business ventures.
Applications for the 2025 intake are now open, with the closing date set for Aug 13.
Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, mayor Adam Yii called on food entrepreneurs, especially Mirians, to seize this opportunity.
'Umami provides a platform that promotes dignity through work, culture and creativity.
'With well-structured programmes like this, we are nurturing talent, building confidence and shaping Miri into a city of opportunity, resilience and innovation,' said Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman.
An initiative by the SAGO Group and supported by the Hong Leong Foundation, the 10-week food business incubator aims to equip participants with practical skills, mentorship, and exposure needed to thrive in the food and beverage industry.
SAGO Group director Arif Abdul Rahman said this year's intake builds on the success of last year's edition, where the first batch of six entrepreneurs collectively generated RM136,218 in revenue over six months.
'They also co-catered a Chinese New Year open house serving 3,500 guests, with each earning an average of RM8,000,' he said.

Carlsberg all out to sustain margins
Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini. SHAH ALAM: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (Carlsberg Malaysia) aims to preserve its profit margins amid expectations of higher than usual depreciation costs in the medium term. The group expects heightened depreciation costs on a major upgrade that was due and was carried out in its production line last year. Carlsberg Malaysia's managing director Stefano Clini also said the group had announced a slight increase in product prices recently in order to sustain its margins. 'The increase in prices may have a short-term effect in demand perhaps for a couple of months, while there are some uncertainties on the consumer confidence front. We do not know if this will improve at this point in time,' Clini said at a press conference announcing its quarterly results yesterday. 'Our job is to protect our margins. We do not have a target to improve it further, but we do want to ensure it does not deteriorate. 'Aside from pricing, we also tackle this through our product mix such as premium brands and value management. We believe we have been successful so far and we hope margins will be protected moving forward,' he added. Carlsberg Malaysia's chief financial officer Vivian Gun also took note of several tailwinds in the group's favour, including a ringgit that is at present marginally stronger, and raw material prices which have eased recently. 'These factors help but we are not sure how long they will last. The currency can fluctuate up and down on different days just like what had happened in the third quarter last year where there was a sudden sharp appreciation and it dropped again after that. 'Our price hike is to protect our margins for a more sustainable future. We also try to anticipate any volatility that may come,' Gun said. Carlsberg Malaysia reported an increase in net profit of 3.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM81.9mil despite a 3.4% y-o-y decline in revenue to RM490.2mil for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25). This set of results was due to the effects of lower tax expenses for the quarter, it said. With its earnings per share at 26.80 sen, it also announced a dividend of 20 sen per share. This brings the cumulative interim dividend to 43 sen per share for the financial year ending December 2025 (FY25). Its Malaysia operations registered a higher revenue and profit from operations in part due to a lower base in the same quarter last year, resulting from trade purchases in March last year ahead of the price increase. Meanwhile, Carlsberg Malaysia said its Singapore operations saw a decline in revenue and profit from operations due to the softer on-trade performance and intensified competitive pricing pressure in the market, amid cautious consumer sentiment and subdued discretionary spending. Clini said he is satisfied with the group's performance for the first half of the year despite the lower sales due to the shorter Chinese New Year timing. 'Our continued focus on our disciplined discount management and also operational efficiency demonstrates the resilience of our business strategy amid the challenging and subdued local market, giving us the confidence to keep investing behind our brands,' he further said.

Oriental Kopi steams to record high on heavy traded
KUALA LUMPUR: Oriental Kopi Holdings Bhd brewed up its strongest rally since its market debut, hitting a fresh high of 94.5 sen a share amid a trading frenzy that had investors lining up like customers for its signature kaya toast. The counter jumped 9.88 per cent, or 8.5 sen, after opening at 86 sen and touching an intraday peak of 95 sen. Nearly 38 million shares changed hands, its busiest session since February, when it last served up a double shot of trading excitement. Oriental Kopi made its debut on Jan 23 this year at 44 sen a share following an initial public offering that was oversubscribed by nearly 60 times. The listing raised about RM184 million to fund the establishment of a new head office, central kitchen and warehouse, as well as to expand its cafe operations, packaged food segment and international marketing efforts. For the second quarter of 2025, the group posted a net profit of RM13.82 million, fuelled by robust growth from its cafe operations and packaged goods business. The performance was supported by increased walk-in customer traffic during the Chinese New Year period and the opening of new outlets.

Johor Tribunal orders KK contractor to repay RM4,000 for incomplete roof painting job

A marketing executive, frustrated by the contractor's delays in repainting the roof of his home in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, filed a case with the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal. The claimant, Chin Liqi, said he decided to file the case with the Tribunal in Johor Baru instead of Kota Kinabalu because he worked in Singapore. Chin said he came across a classified advertisement in a newspaper for roof painting services during Chinese New Year when he was back in his hometown of Kota Kinabalu. 'I hired this contractor as I was on a short-break from my job in Singapore,' he said,adding that he did not have time to shop around for other contractors. The roof repainting work was for his family's double-storey terrace house in Taman Sempelang, Sembulan, within the capital city. He said the contractor quoted RM10,400 for the project, which was scheduled to begin in early April and completed by April 10. The first payment of RM3,000 was made on April 1, followed by RM1,500 on April 5, bringing the total deposit to RM4,500, the claimant said. 'Two workers came to the house to clean the roof while my parents were at home on April 5. 'At that time, I had returned to Singapore,' he said when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal. The claimant said that was the only time the workers came to the house. 'I called the contractor repeatedly from Singapore and he gave several excuses as to why the workers never turned up,' Chin said. He said the contractor cited reasons such as rain, public holidays, workers on sick leave or assigned to other projects. 'After that, the contractor was not reachable and neither did he respond to my messages,' said the claimant. 'I'm only claiming RM4,000 refund from the respondent instead of RM4,500 since the workers did roof cleaning which is about RM500,' he said. Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM4,000 to the claimant within two weeks.
