Angels aim to continue recent mastery of Dodgers
(Photo credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images) The Los Angeles Dodgers head into Tuesday night's game with the Los Angeles Angels knowing they already have lost the season's Freeway Series to their Southern California rivals for the first time since 2019. The Angels took a 4-0 lead in the six-game series with a 7-4 victory on Monday night. Shortstop Zach Neto reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with two solo home runs, three runs and two walks, while starter Jose Soriano allowed just two singles over six shutout innings. It was the fifth straight victory over the defending World Series champions going back to last season for the Angels. The loss dropped the Dodgers to just 12-19 since July 4, and their lead in the National League West fell to one game over the red-hot San Diego Padres, winners of 12 of their past 15. The bitter NL West rivals play six times over a 10-game span beginning with a three-game series at Dodger Stadium on Friday night. That makes the final two games of the Freeway Series even more important for the Dodgers. 'It was a bad loss,' said third baseman Max Muncy, who hit a three-run homer on Monday. 'It really was a bad loss for us. There's not any way of really getting around that.' The loss came on the heels of a frustrating 5-4 home defeat to Toronto on Sunday afternoon, a game that saw the Dodgers lose despite finishing with 10 hits and 13 walks. However, Los Angeles was just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 16 men on base. 'It's not going well for us right now,' Muncy said. 'We've got to find a way to snap out of it. No one is going to feel sorry for us. It's on us to find our way out of it.' Muncy was asked if he was doing any scoreboard watching with the Padres in hot pursuit. 'We need to focus on ourselves. We can't worry about what anyone else is going,' he said. 'We've got to snap out of what is going on.' Emmet Sheehan (3-2, 3.00 ERA) will make his first career start against the Angels on Tuesday and will be opposed by fellow right-hander Victor Mederos (0-0, 4.50), who will be making his first career appearance versus the Dodgers. Mederos is 7-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 16 starts at Triple-A Salt Lake. He is subbing for left-hander Tyler Anderson, who is dealing with back stiffness and has made a franchise-record 19 consecutive starts without a win. The Angels still have a slight pulse in the race for an American League playoff berth after Monday's victory, trailing the New York Yankees by six games for the final wild-card spot. Neto got the Angels off to a quick start against Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Monday, hitting his first pitch into the bleachers in right-center field for his eighth leadoff homer of the season. That broke Brian Downing's single-season mark set in 1987. 'Bang!' Neto replied when asked what he was feeling after hitting the home run. 'I mean, there's no other way to put it. That's a good way to start the game and get things going.' 'He's proven in the leadoff spot that be brings danger, the presence of the home run is there,' interim Angels manager Ray Montgomery said. 'He's done it a lot. It really (sets) the tone and gets everybody going.'

Diamondbacks DFA veteran reliever Kendall Graveman
(Photo credit: Allan Henry-Imagn Images) The Arizona Diamondbacks designated 10-year major league veteran reliever Kendall Graveman for assignment on Monday and recalled pitcher Juan Morillo in a corresponding move. Graveman, 34, signed with Arizona in spring training after missing all of the 2024 campaign, recovering from right shoulder labrum surgery. He started the season on the injured list (strained right lumbar), debuted with the team on May 13 and also missed time in June due to a hip injury. Graveman made 19 appearances with the Diamondbacks, winning his lone decision, but pitching to an ERA of 7.13 in 17 2/3 innings of work. He did not allow an earned run in six consecutive appearances (July 13-Aug. 3), but permitted two runs, while recording one out vs. San Diego on August 5 and gave up three runs in one inning on August 10 vs. Colorado. 'Kendall was grinding through things,' Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. 'He was having some really good moments, some touch-and-go moments outside of that and we just felt like it was the right time to make a move to get Juan back up here.' Graveman debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014, then spent four seasons in Oakland (2015-18), before spending time with the Seattle Mariners (2020-21), Houston Astros (2021, 2023) and the Chicago White Sox (2022-23). He was a member of two Astros' division-winning squads and appeared in nine games in the 2021 playoffs. The right-hander was 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings of work for the squad which fell to Tampa Bay in the American League Championship Series. Graveman, who intends to keep pitching, signed for $1.35 million with a $5 million mutual option in 2026. He is 36-43 with a 4.03 ERA in 299 career appearances (80 starts). Morillo, 26, posted an 0-2 record and a 4.94 ERA in 31 outings for the Diamondbacks earlier this season. He was recalled from Triple-A Reno.

Cincinnati Open interrupted by power outage
(Photo credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images) The Round of 32 at the Cincinnati Open was suspended late Monday afternoon when the tennis facility in Mason, Ohio, experienced a power outage. Photos from reporters on the scene captured smoke ostensibly coming from on-site generators at Lindner Family Tennis Center. Though there was daylight when the outage occurred, electronic line calling and the TV feed both went offline without power, forcing the delay. Two men's matches were in progress when the outage took place. Greek 25th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas led Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 7-6 (4), 2-5, and fourth seed Taylor Fritz had just won his first set against Italian 31st seed Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (4). Fritz and Sonego began warming up just after 6:30 p.m. ET and their match resumed just minutes later. Before the postponement, Frances Tiafoe was among the players who took care of business as the 10th seed defeated No. 20 seed Ugo Humbert of France 6-4, 6-4. Seeking his first ATP Masters 1000 title, Tiafoe pleased the home crowd by hitting eight aces among his 22 overall winners. Although Humbert saved 9 of 12 break points to make his opponent work for the win, Tiafoe's first serve was too much for him (31 of 41 first-service points, 75.6 percent). Danish No. 7 seed Holger Rune took down No. 28 Alex Michelsen 7-6 (4), 6-3. Tiafoe and Rune will collide in the Round of 16. Also, No. 23 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada was ahead 7-6 (4), 4-2 when France's Arthur Rinderknech retired. Rinderknech had collapsed, apparently due to the midday heat in Ohio, though he was able to leave the court under his own power. Three matches were still on tap for Monday night, including World No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy going up against Canadian 30th seed Gabriel Diallo.
