Katie Ledecky among four gold-medal favorites for the Americans on Day 3 at swim worlds
The Americans have one gold from the first two days of the meet, clearly slowed by what team officials call
'acute gastroenteritis'
picked up at a training camp in Thailand. But symptoms have faded and results seem sure to follow in Singapore.
Ledecky goes in the 1,500-meter freestyle where she is virtually unbeatable. She holds the world record — 15 minutes, 20.48 seconds — and swam the second-fastest time in history earlier this year — 15:24.51.
She's the most decorated female swimmer in history — 14 medals in the Olympics and 27 in the worlds and counting. Of those 41, 30 are gold.
But there's more than Ledecky.
Luke Hobson has the top qualifying time in the 200 freestyle. He was the bronze medalist a year ago in Paris. The field is bunched including Paris Olympic champion David Popovici of Romania.
Pan Zhanle
of China, who set a world record a year ago in Paris in the 100, missed qualifying for the 200. He was 22nd in qualifying, almost three seconds behind the top qualifiers.
Another American, Regan Smith, faces off with Kaylee McKeown of Australia in one of swimming's best rivalries. Smith holds the world record (57.13). McKeown took gold in Paris, pushing Smith to silver.
The fourth gold-medal shot is with Kate Douglass in the 100 breaststroke. The gold medalist in the 200 in Paris, Douglass goes for gold in the shorter distance. Lilly King, who holds the world record (1:04.13) failed to qualify. Anita Bottazzo of Italy and Tang Qianting of China are in the chase.
The fifth final is fast and close in the men's 100 backstroke with Hubert Kós of Hungary — he trains at the University of Texas at Austin — the top qualifier.
Summer McIntosh
, the 18-year-old Canadian swimmer who is aiming for five individual gold medals in Singapore, won the 200-meter individual medley on Monday after winning the 400 freestyle title on Sunday. She's not competing for gold on Day 3.

Trump plans White House task force on security for the 2028 L.A. Olympics
WASHINGTON — President Trump will order the establishment of a White House task force on Tuesday focused on security for the Olympics Games in Los Angeles in 2028. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said the president plans on creating the task force by executive order on Tuesday, telling The Times that Trump 'considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle.' 'During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,' Leavitt said. 'Sports is one of President Trump's greatest passions, and his athletic expertise, combined with his unmatched hospitality experience will make these Olympic events the most exciting and memorable in history.' The executive order follows on Trump's signature legislation, referred to by the president as the 'big beautiful bill,' securing $1 billion for security, planning and other costs for the L.A. Games. Planning for the games is being led by the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, or LA28, a privately funded non-profit organization. Casey Wasserman, chairperson and president of LA28, thanked the Trump administration in a statement 'for their leadership and unwavering support as we prepare to deliver the largest and most ambitious Olympic and Paralympic Games ever hosted in the United States.' 'Since we secured this historic opportunity in 2017, President Trump has consistently recognized the magnitude of our responsibility in welcoming the world to Los Angeles,' Wasserman said. 'The creation of this task force marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028.'

UAE to host cricket tri-series ahead of T20 World Cup
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The United Arab Emirates will host a Twenty20 tri-series including Afghanistan and Pakistan later this month as part of the teams' buildup for next year's T20 World Cup. Sharjah will host all seven games of the tri-series, starting Aug. 29. Teams play against each other twice before the top two qualify for the final. Pakistan and Afghanistan have already secured direct qualification for the T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. UAE could also qualify but it has to play ICC's Asia-East Asia and Pacific qualifiers in Oman in October. Afghanistan, which finished seventh in the last T20 World Cup, hasn't played a T20 since a bilateral series against Zimbabwe late last year. Pakistan is currently playing a T20 series against West Indies in the United States. The tri-series will be followed by the Asia Cup, also scheduled to be held in the UAE, from Sept. 9 when Afghanistan takes on Hong Kong in the opening game. ___ AP cricket: The Associated Press
