Inside Designer Arthur Arbesser's First Interior Design Project for the Altstadt Vienna Hotel
MILAN — Fans of Arthur Arbesser's upbeat, sophisticated fashions can now sleep in a haven of his aesthetic.
The Vienna-born designer, a rising player in the home sphere, designed two rooms for the Altstadt Vienna, marking his foray into the worlds of hospitality and interior design. The boutique hotel, located at in Vienna's Spittelberg neighborhood in the 7th district, has come to the fore as a hot spot for art and design enthusiasts, namely for its rooms designed by prominent fashion designers, artists and architects. Among them, Italian designer Matteo Thun and Istanbul-born and Vienna-based designer Atil Kutoglu.

Arbesser, who has been based in Milan for 20 years, joined the Alstadt roster of luminaries this month, creating his own 'Viennese-Milanese melange' in two rooms of the family-run hotel, working with furniture and fabrics from the Austrian furniture manufacturer Wittmann.
'I love that it's a family-run hotel and a place for art and design lovers. I filled the rooms with a lot of Wittmann furniture and my favorite design classics. I wanted to make them really cozy and sweet and you can see clearly that someone from Vienna designed those rooms, with a strong connection to Italy,' Arbesser told WWD on Wednesday.
Arbesser designed two rooms: Room 14 and Room 30. In 14, he incorporated his Flower fabric on the Wittmann Spring bed and bench. Flower is an homage to bygone Wittmann collaborator Josef Frank and includes 20th-century scenes and elements like cell phones in a cartoonish splash of shapes and flora. Frank was an Austrian architect and artist of Jewish origins who emigrated to Sweden before World War II, where he became a designer for the Stockholm-based design company Svenskt Tenn. Elsewhere, he enhanced the space with Milanese influences, both modern and retro. Key pieces include the Quaderna desk by Superstudio for Zanotta and the Imbuto floor lamp by late architect and designer Luigi Caccia Dominioni and which is produced by Azucena. It also includes the 1967 Flos' Snoopy lamp by Achille e Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The bathroom is splashed with Arbesser's signature bold stripes that call to mind Arbesser's fashion designs.
In Room 30, he played with geometric motifs like chessboards and cubes. It includes two colourfully lacquered bedside cabinets, the Atrium modular sofa by Wittmann and Chess carpet. He injected a Bauhaus vibe with Hungarian American architect Marcel Breuer's Laccio coffee table (produced by Knoll) and the Le Grand Bleu lamp by French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand produced by Nemo Group, as well as Austrian American architect Friedrick Kiesler's Freischwinger chair, covered in mint-colored leather and produced by Wittmann. He also included two paintings by Austrian artist Xenia Hausner. Room 30 starts at 244 euros per night, while Room 14 starts at 235 euros per night.
The Alstadt hotel is owned by Otto E. Wiesenthal, who opened the boutique hotel in 1991 and is known for his vast collection of art. The landmark was originally built in 1902.
While his fashion line is still his focus, Arbesser has been diversifying in recent years. A roster of collaborations includes corkscrews for Italian design firm Alessi and another tie up with Denmark-based firm Gubi for his Oca chair, made in collaboration with Italian artisan Alan Zinchi.
Arbesser accepted the role as creative counsel for historic Austrian furniture-maker Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten in 2023, after which he expanded his involvement into supporting Wittmann in the areas of presentation, branding and communication.
Admittedly, this first interior design project presented a few challenges. 'I basically started with a white room.…There were some technical details I wasn't prepared for, like working with curtains for example, but once you start digging in you figure it out,' he said, adding that he's open to working more in the field of interior design.
Arbesser joins a roster of designers delving into the world of home and interiors. Lars Nilsson — the Swedish-born designer whose fashion career included top positions at Bill Blass, Nina Ricci and Gianfranco Ferré, as well as behind-the-scenes roles at Christian Dior and Christian Lacroix — made news with his 2018 textile collection with Svenskt Tenn, and a Vandra Rugs collaboration before that.

Regina sisters embrace Ukrainian dancing at Mosaic and Japanese language at home
When audience members watch the Ukrainian dancers at this year's Mosaic festival, they may be forgiven for assuming that the dancers all speak just English or Ukrainian. But Kiko and Maya Malnyk have the heritages they've inherited from both their parents — learning Ukrainian folk dances from their father's side and speaking Japanese with their Japanese-born mother. "I sometimes think that maybe I'm a little bit special …because not a lot of people are just part Japanese and part Ukrainian," 11-year-old Kiko said. That's something their mother said she tries to get her two daughters to understand and appreciate. "I just keep telling them that they're lucky. They're just lucky that they have so many opportunities to learn," said Izumi Kanayama, adding they get to grow up in Canada and try things like Ukrainian dancing, but also get regular opportunities to visit her own home country of Japan. The girls' father, Chris Malnyk, has also seen how diverse the Ukrainian dancers are, bringing together people who don't necessarily have Ukrainian ethnicity or background. "There's quite a few people from Japan who are involved in it, at least three families," said Malnyk, adding that he could hear Japanese spoken at rehearsals at times. "It's really kind of unique and not what I would have expected going to a Ukrainian dance school. It's been multi-ethnic." Kanayama was born and raised in Japan before coming to Canada in 1995 to learn English and staying on to study economics. It was at the University of Regina that she met her husband through mutual friends. She exclusively speaks Japanese with her daughters so that they can communicate with their Japanese grandparents and extended family. "When they were little, I was just speaking to them in Japanese only. So we didn't do much writing or read that much, but then they just picked it up," Kanayama said. In addition to their Ukrainian dancing, both girls attend Japanese language classes on Saturdays, and even sit to eat meals at a kotatsu, the traditional low table. "We usually eat traditional Japanese food," said Kiko. "I really like it." Both parents feel that their children are fortunate to be able to see and embrace both sides of their cultural heritage. Kanayama said she wants her children to see it gives them opportunities other people may not have, and will help them become kind and productive humans. "I'm just hoping that exploring a different culture will bring richness to their lives."

Mimmo's Mozzarella Italian Cafe and Market is a cheese lover's delight
There's a little corner of Italy hidden away in North Miami. Mimmo's Mozzarella Italian Cafe and Market is a family-owned gem that's been drawing cheese lovers from across South Florida for 12 years. Bruno Ponce and his wife Graciana have been serving up handcrafted Italian specialties to a devoted following of locals who consider this place their best-kept secret. "I love the comfortability, the food, the atmosphere — everyone is always so pleasant and peaceful here," said longtime customer Alessandro Patricolo. His favorite?: "The burrata on the focaccia." Phillip Jakubiszen, another frequent visitor, raves about the consistently high quality. "Everything is so fresh, [and] delicious," he said. "I mean, so many of the different paninis we've had, the gnocchi, I mean everything. You can't go wrong, it's second to none, honestly." What sets Mimmo's apart isn't just the food. It's the fact that everything you taste here is made from scratch, starting with the star of the show - fresh mozzarella. Every morning, Ponce pulls mozzarella using traditional techniques, transforming simple cheese curds into creamy perfection with no additives. His dedication to freshness means early mornings and careful attention to detail. "We start every day at five in the morning to meet the production," Ponce explained. "We start to keep them fresh." Though Ponce hails from Argentina, his grandfather was Italian, and that influence is evident in every corner: from the market filled with imported authentic products to the fascinating cheese-aging cooler, which showcases the traditional process. Some of their aged cheeses require patience. "We have to wait two months [for] aging, and then the cheese is coming ready," Ponce said. Mimmo's offers take-out, delivery and sit-down dining. Their classic cheese platter features freshly made creamy burrata with Parma Cotta ham and four other house-made cheeses, served with incredible homemade focaccia bread. The experience transports diners straight to Italy. The restaurant's classic panini sandwich with fresh mozzarella, tomato, prosciutto di Parma, and pesto sauce on a baguette perfectly captures the essence of Italian simplicity and quality. Mimmo's is open seven days a week, and a significant part of their business involves selling their delicious products to hotels and restaurants throughout the area. For those interested in learning the craft themselves, they also offer cheese-making classes by appointment only. National awards, praise bestowed on Asheville restaurants, bars, breweries
ASHEVILLE - Asheville diners and imbibers know what the city has to offer, and the nation and world are taking notice. Beverage industry and Southern lifestyle publications have applauded local restaurants and bars for their menus and overall excellence. Several breweries and distilleries have been awarded medals in international craft beer and spirits competitions. Taste the best of the best ― here are some of Asheville's latest award-winning and accolade-earning destinations.: Southern Living editors scoured the country for the best new bites, finding three Asheville establishments worthy of making its list of the 20 Best New Restaurants in the South.: Good Hot Fish, a modern fish camp owned and operated by Chef Ashleigh Shanti, a former "Top Chef" and recurring Food Network contestant, offers a menu of creatively crafted seafood and Appalachian dishes ranging from catfish to trout bologna sandwiches. The eatery opened in January 2024 inside Eulogy, a music venue at Burial Beer Co., 10 Buxton Ave., in South Slope. Luminosa, a modern Appalachian-meets-Italian cuisine restaurant, opened in May 2024 in the historic Flatiron Building, which has been renovated as The Flat Iron Hotel at 20 Battery Park Ave. Led by Executive Chef Graham House and Chef de Cuisine Sean McMullen, Luminosa's seasonal menu regularly rotates with pasta, pizza and other vegetable-forward plates.
