During a pre-fight press conference ahead of his UFC 317 clash with Oliveira, Topuria declared he would be interested in a potential welterweight title shot against Islam Makhachev.
Topuria told media members in attendance, 'If Islam becomes the welterweight world champion, for sure I'm going to push for that shot also.'
While he has teased a potential run at welterweight in the past, this time he has verbally confirmed he wants to challenge for a championship belt in a third division, a feat that has never been accomplished in UFC history.

At the top of his mind, the main goal is to secure that coveted fight against Makhachev that has alluded him for so long. Topuria has previously accused Makhachev of avoiding a potential lightweight bout, branding him a coward and claiming that the Dagestani fighter is running from the challenge.
'If he wins the title, and I win the title in the lightweight division, maybe I move up or he comes down to the lightweight division and we have the fight that everyone wants to see,' Topuria clarified further.
Topuria also expressed his frustration at the fact that he is not currently lined up with Makhachev, and must face Oliveira instead, saying, 'To be honest, I wanted to face [Makhachev] because he was the guy who was dominating everyone in that weight division. But at the end of the day, I can't control what they do.'
Despite his words about Makhachev, Topuria notes that he must remained focused on his upcoming fight with Oliveira.

'Every fight is a huge challenge,' Topuria said regarding the difficulty of fighting Oliveira compared to Makhachev. 'There are no easy fights when you get on this level.'

UFC Baku live updates: Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. results, round-by-round analysis and highlights

Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. headlines UFC Baku on Saturday at the Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. Uncrowned has UFC Baku live results, round-by-round updates, start time and highlights for the Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. fight card on Saturday morning at the Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Hill squares off against recent title challenger Rountree in the afternoon's five-round main event, while longtime lightweight contender Rafael Fiziev looks to fend off hard-charging up-and-comer Ignacio Bahamondes in the co-headliner. Hill (12-3, 1 NC) finds himself in dire need of a win after dropping back-to-back contests since his 2023 title win over Glover Teixeira. The 34-year-old Chicago native was forced to vacate his title in July 2023 after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon while playing pickup basketball. He subsequently lost his April 2024 return against then-champion Alex Pereira via first-round knockout, then sustained a brutal third-round knockout loss to fellow former champion Jiri Prochazka this past January. Advertisement One more loss in a row for Hill and his time in the title picture could be over for the foreseeable future. Rountree (13-6, 1 NC), likewise, aims to bounce back after falling short in a four-round thriller against Pereira in October. The 35-year-old Los Angeles native ultimately lost in his first UFC title opportunity, however his back-and-forth battle with Pereira made Uncrowned's short list as one of 2024's best fights of the year. Prior to that, Rountree racked up a five-fight win streak that included brutal knockouts of Anthony Smith, Chris Daukaus, Karl Roberson and Modestas Bukauskas. Advertisement In the co-main event, Fiziev (12-4) looks to snap his own three-fight losing skid when he takes on the streaking Bahamondes (17-5), who's won six of his past seven UFC appearances.
