His death was announced via a statement posted to his X account on Sunday, June 1, and the Brinx.TV website.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away. John, co-founder of BASE Productions, founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, had been battling depression," the statement said.
The statement noted that "John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025."
"His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help," the statement continued.
Sport Science first aired on Fox Sports in 2007, before moving to ESPN.
The show, hosted by Brenkus, uncovered "sports' biggest myths and mysteries by using cutting-edge technology to measure momentum, friction and the laws of gravity," according to an ESPN synopsis.
Brenkus hosted nearly 1,800 segments explaining the correlation between science and sports, USA Today reported.
ESPN shared a tribute to the late host on SportsCenter, announcing his death to viewers and remembering him as an 'innovator, entertainer and educator,' who 'will be missed by many.'
Brenkus was vocal about his mental health, telling Marcellus Wiley in a 2023 episode of Never Shut Up that he once fell into a "deep deep depression' after selling Sport Science to ESPN.
"I was flat out suicidal," Brenkus said, adding, "I was ready to do it and my dog Zeppelin came to my rescue. Literally pulled on my pants, on my jeans, and literally was going crazy. Wouldn't leave me alone."
After the experience, he called his mom and said, " 'There's something wrong with me. I am mentally lost.' "
"I then went through a battle, I'm telling you, a battle to get out of it," he said, noting that he "finally found the way," after going to six different psychologists and psychiatrists.

Mocked by some to be top-five pick, Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round, eventually being scooped up by the Cleveland Browns, who had already taken Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round. Advertisement It's still a big question mark on who starts, between the two rookies Sanders and Gabriel, or the two veterans in Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. On Wednesday, a report from ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin suggested that Sanders could be the Week 1 starting quarterback. "Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," Martin said about the Browns during a Wednesday appearance on ESPN's "Get Up". "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation. It's also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge." According to a graphic posted by ESPN Cleveland on X, on Day 2 of open Browns OTAs, Gabriel led the four potential starting quarterbacks in passing attempts. Gabriel completed 11-of-20 passes, throwing three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Pickett had the second-most throws, going 9-of-15 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Sanders wasn't far behind, completing 9-of-14 passes, finding the end zone thrice but throwing an interception. During the latest edition of the "Orange and Brown Talk Podcast", Browns reporters Dan Labbe and Ashley Bastock noted that Gabriel likely remains ahead of Sanders in the depth chart due to his draft position. "Where they draft these guys matters, and there's a reason they drafted them and they do care about that to an extent," Labbe explained. "Dillon Gabriel was a third-round pick. And so while we're sitting here saying he hasn't looked the best of these two quarterbacks and especially [Wednesday], he's also just got a longer leash and he's just got more room to not be, to maybe not be the guy they've envisioned yet. Because he was a third-round pick and that matters."
