Night cricket tourneys thrive on pilfered power
Although Hesco regularly releases press statements boasting of efforts to combat power pilferage, the illegal practice remains rampant. Over 500 locations in the city host night unauthorised cricket matches during Ramazan, with organisers tapping into electricity poles or directly connecting to street-level power meters. In some areas, the use of high-power lighting rods on school and college grounds has further escalated the issue.
Despite Hesco's claims of strict enforcement, the problem persists, particularly during the holy month. These night cricket tourneys, which typically begin after Taraweeh prayers around 3 to 3.30am, continue unabated. In some areas, intense inter-area competitions are held, with prizes on offer, all powered by stolen electricity.
In an effort to cover up their power theft, some organisers in have resorted to placing small generators at the venues, pretending that electricity is being generated independently. However, the reality remains that these events are powered illegally, which raises serious concerns about the lack of enforcement and oversight.
The illegal tournaments are not without consequence for the public. Traffic flow is disrupted as matches are frequently held on busy streets and highways. Motorcyclists and drivers have reported arguments and brawls with players, who ask them to turn off their headlights or avoid passing by the playing fields. Disputes between players over umpire decisions have resulted in occasional clashes between teams and their supporters.
On Wednesday, similar illegal cricket tournaments were reported in different neighbourhoods in Hyderabad, including Phulli Preetabad, Station Road, Risala Road, Lajpat Road, G Ward, Latifabad, Qasimabad, Site Area, and others. These tourneys show a broader, systemic issue where electricity theft, particularly during Ramadan, remains unchecked.
This annual pattern of electricity theft is further compounded by the illicit use of stolen power to operate temporary markets or stalls set up for Eid celebrations. Hesco officials, despite knowing about these activities, have failed to take meaningful action. Instead, their approach has been to hold sporadic public demonstrations, which are often accompanied by media releases showcasing minimal interventions.
The most concerning aspect of this ongoing issue is the aftermath: once the holy month of Ramadan ends, Hesco calculates the total amount of stolen electricity and includes this figure in the bills of regular consumers. As a result, those who have used electricity responsibly are left to shoulder the burden of these losses. Furthermore, the process of disputing these inflated bills has been made exceedingly difficult, leaving many consumers unable to rectify the situation, causing unnecessary stress and financial strain.

State will ensure justice: CM terms Degari killing case ‘test case'
QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti on Monday clarified that there was no marital relationship between the man and woman who were brutally killed in an alleged honour killing in Sanjeedi Degari, a suburb of Quetta. Terming it a 'test case' for his administration, he vowed that all those responsible for the crime would be brought to justice. Speaking at an emergency press conference in Quetta, the chief minister said that 11 suspects had so far been arrested, and law enforcement agencies were conducting raids to apprehend more. 'Whoever is involved in this case will be arrested, produced before a court, and punished in accordance with the law,' he asserted. CM Bugti rejected the widespread impression on social media that the deceased were a recently married couple. 'There was no marital relationship between the two,' he said, adding that both the woman and the man were already parents—she had five children and the man had five or six. The clarification comes in the wake of a disturbing video that went viral last week, purportedly showing the execution of the couple in the name of honour. The incident, believed to have taken place days before Eid-ul-Azha, sparked national outrage and prompted the Balochistan High Court to take suo motu notice. The chief minister said the provincial administration had taken notice of the incident even before the video gained attention on social media. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice, stating that the state would not abandon the oppressed. 'This case involves victims, and the state is firmly standing with them,' he said. He also confirmed that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) concerned had been suspended for negligence, and further disciplinary actions would be taken against those who failed in their duties. Calling the Degari killings a 'test case,' Bugti stressed that no individual or group could be allowed to operate above the law. He said the incident had raised questions about the misuse of Jirga systems and tribal authority in criminal matters. 'No attempt is being made to disarm tribal society, but no society can condone such killings,' he said. 'The factors behind this crime must be uncovered. Jirgas that promote such actions are being actively stopped by the state. The government will be run under the Constitution.' In response to questions about the broader law and order situation in the province, the chief minister said that security forces had killed 10 militants in an operation conducted the previous day. 'These terrorists seek soft targets and attempt to flee after carrying out attacks. But our forces are effectively countering them,' he said. Bugti criticised elements that he claimed were exaggerating the security threat in Balochistan, stating that the situation was gradually improving. 'The people should not be afraid. We are defeating terrorism and will restore peace across the province.'

Extortion ring dismantled: police
Police have dismantled a criminal network involved in a recent surge of extortion cases across the metropolis. One suspect was killed in an encounter, while several others have been apprehended. Police are intensifying efforts to capture remaining key suspects, including one suspect for whom a Red Notice has been issued. According to SSP SIU Muhammad Shoaib Memon, extortion-related crimes escalated in New Karachi starting March this year. Criminals targeted local businesses and residents, demanding money through threatening slips and WhatsApp calls. Those who resisted or delayed payments faced violent retaliation, including armed attacks on their shops, residences, and workplaces. During the last 10 days of Ramazan, a citizen, Abdul Jabbar, was fatally shot at a charity Dastarkhwan. On 16 July, a rickshaw driver was killed and six others injured in Surjani Town in another extortion-related shooting. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) launched a targeted operation to dismantle the extortion network. Investigations revealed that Wasiullah Lakho, operating from Iran, was orchestrating the gang's activities through Abdul Samad Kathiawari.

Extortion shadow looms over the metro
The extortion mafia has once again raised its head in the city, with 32 cases reported over the past five months. The highest number of incidents — 10 — were reported in District Central, where extortionists not only targeted individuals but also caused loss of life through gunfire. Taking notice of the rising number of extortion cases, Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho has formed a 13-member team comprising the SSP of New Karachi Division, CPLC, SIU, technical team members, and officers from the operations wing of the District Central police. So far this year, 11 extortion cases were reported in January, four in February, nine in March, five in April, and three in May. According to reports, hotel owners, food centres, paan shopkeepers, and street vendors were blackmailed and threatened with dire consequences if they did not pay extortion money. In the New Karachi area of District Central, a young boy and a social worker — who was providing iftar to citizens during Ramazan — were killed in firing by extortionists. Additionally, several shopkeepers have reported cases to the police in which they paid extortion money. It is worth noting that investigations have revealed evidence of the involvement of the Lyari gang war's Wasiullah Lakho and Samad Kathiawari groups in these extortion cases. Police have already arrested several members of both groups. The special team formed to crack down on extortionists will be headed by SP New Karachi Division Salman Waheed, and will include Assistant Chief Operations of CPLC Kashif Iftikhar, Deputy Chief District Central Sheikh Faraz, and Naveed Hashmi. Other members include DSP Operations Wasif Qureshi and DSP Investigation Nasir Afridi from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the CIA Police, SHO SIU Inspector Malik Mazhar Awan, and technical team members Sub-Inspectors Qadir Jalali and Zeeshan, along with area Head Constable Faraz. The team also includes the SDPO of New Karachi from the Operations Wing of District Central and the technical team of District Central. In addition, the team may seek assistance from any police officer within the Karachi Range as needed. The Karachi Police Chief has tasked the team with preventing further extortion cases in District Central and arresting those involved.
