THEY have long been associated with gut-busting Americans who think nothing of cramming calorie-packed meals into their supersized stomachs.
But competitive eating contests are now going mainstream in the UK, with enterprising starved restaurants serving them up to attract punters.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, dozens of outlets are now offering a variety of food challenges, from finishing the biggest steak to gobbling up a mountain of burgers.
The trend, which started with Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in the States in 1972, is now popular with social media influencers.
But how would the average Brit fare taking on the gargantuan meals?
Four of our brave writers braced their stomachs to find out.

32-inch pizza to be finished in one sitting
(They're open for 13 hours) - Difficulty 4/5
What is it? Massive pizza with 20,000 calories.
Only two people have ever polished off one of these 32in pizzas – Pizzaholic restaurant owner Ilhan Ozcan and competitive eater Kyle Gibson.

It's big enough to feed someone for ten days.
Staring at the humongous pizza, which I must eat all in one go, I realise that a single slice is bigger than my head.
I am shocked by the sheer weight of cheese and crust.
After 25 minutes, I have consumed 60 per cent of the pizza, but I am shaking with nausea and I am defeated, which means I have to pay my full bill, £93.99.
Boss Ilhan said: 'It's popular. The rapper 50 Cent was here and we delivered one to Bryan Adams after his show in Newcastle. We used to challenge people to do it in 20 minutes but it was too difficult.'

The Big 60: 60oz steak to be finished in 60mins - Difficulty: 2/5
What is it? 60oz steak equivalent to seven-and-a-half average servings.
Barbican Steakhouse's 5,000-calorie steak is £64.95.

Around 200 people have tried the Big 60 Challenge in the past decade but just a handful polished it off in under 60 minutes.
As the medium rare slab was placed in front of me, I felt confident.
But 45 minutes later, I threw in the towel with eight ounces left.
Co-owner Tahir Bhatti said: 'Our best time was under 20 minutes. He was an average-looking guy, but the mad thing is his wife told us he'd had a bucket of KFC on the way.'

The Paralyser: Monster English breakfast in 12mins - Difficulty: 3/5
What is it? Breakfast including four slices of bacon, four sausages, four hash browns and equivalent of a loaf of bread, plus trimmings.
A 2,000-calorie feast.

Competitors have less than 12 minutes to finish the £18 meal and get their money back at the Greasy Pig.
The current best time is 3.27 minutes.
I managed four slices of bacon, three hash browns, two half slices of bread, half a sausage, a scoop of beans and a couple of mushrooms.
Boss Mitz Bala said: 'It causes a stir on social media, it attracts influencers with huge followings.'

Eating 13 burgers in 10mins - Difficulty: 5/5
What is it? Ten minutes to eat 13 burgers.
I'm a glutton, so was looking forward to taking on Red Dog Saloon's burger-eating challenge.

But then I found out I would need to eat 13 6oz whoppers in ten minutes to claim £5,000, and my stomach began to shrivel.
Professional scoffer Leah Shutkever ate 12 and it's her record you have to beat.
My mood darkened as I was served a mountain of meat, cheese, onion and suffocating brioche bun.
Halfway through the fourth, I surrendered. I ate three and a half.
Tourists began to film me on their phones through the window of the Soho branch.

The WTA Tour veteran looked like she'd never been away as she defeated world No35 Peyton Stearns, 22 years her junior, 6-3 6-4 in front of a raucous night session crowd. In doing so, Williams became the second-oldest woman to ever win a singles match at tour level, only behind Martina Navratilova, who did so at 47-years-old. The American legend won her first tour-level match 31 years ago, aged just 14. After her historic triumph, Williams revealed on court that she is engaged to actor partner Andrea Preti. The tennis icon said: "My fiance is here and he really encouraged me to keep playing. "There were so many times where I just wanted to coast and kind of chill. Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? "You guys don't know how much work goes into this, like it's 9 to 5 except you're running the whole time. So he encouraged me to get through this and it's wonderful to be here. He's never seen me play." Williams is also playing the doubles event in DC this week. Tennis star Venus Williams talks about her struggles with chronic illness and Sjogren's syndrome Partnering Hailey Baptiste, Williams beat Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6-3 6-1 to advance to round two. Speaking about partnering Baptiste, Williams poked fun at her retired sister Serena. She said: "I think from the first point I could see that we were going to be a good team. "We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way." Williams and Baptiste will be back in action later today, as they take on No2 seeds Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai in the quarter-finals. The veteran will then return again for the singles tomorrow, taking on Poland's Magdalena Frech. Williams has entered the revamped US Open mixed doubles event, which also featured Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, alongside pal Reilly Opelka. Stacey Solomon has been noticeably absent from Loose Women – pals finally reveal the real reason why
Apart from a one-off special, mum Stacey last appeared on the regular daytime show more than a YEAR ago CUT LOOSE? Stacey Solomon has been noticeably absent from Loose Women – pals finally reveal the real reason why WITH several TV shows, fashion collections, a haircare range and five kids to look after, Stacey Solomon has her finger in many pies. However, there's one programme she's been conspicuously absent from in recent months and fans are desperate to know why. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 6 Stacey Solomon hasn't appeared on Loose Women since December 2024 Credit: Rex 6 Stacey recently shared snaps on her Instagram of an Italian trip with her brand REHAB Credit: Instagram Stacey, 35, last appeared on ITV's Loose Women in December 2024, as a guest on their groundbreaking 25 Hour Talkathon, which saw the ladies take to the air live for over an entire day with no breaks. While Stacey proved to be one of the more popular contributors on the day, discussing everything from her children to her Christmas plans, she hasn't been seen on the show since, leading curious viewers to question the reason behind her disappearance. 'Proud Loose Woman' Given she first appeared on Loose Women in 2011, becoming a regular panelist in 2016 and has made over 350 appearances, it's a mystery as to why she has failed to come back in any capacity. Aside from her guest stint at the Talkathon, Stacey's last show on the panel was in June last year. Add to the fact she still boasts the title 'proud Loose Woman' on her Instagram biog and it's little wonder fans are scratching their heads. Now sources close to the star insist she's simply 'too busy' to go back to the studio. 'Back in a heartbeat' "Stacey is always welcome back and is absolutely still considered part of the Loose family, but at the moment she's so busy with personal projects and her kids that she never seems to find the time,' our source revealed. 'But they'd have her back in a heartbeat. They love her and there's no ill feeling towards her at all. She is just simply too busy to do it right now.' It's been a common theme with Stacey. Back in 2023, after she'd been absent from the show for several months following the birth of youngest daughter Belle, she admitted her work schedule and caring for the little one left her no time to commit to Loose Women. 6 Stacey at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental in Lake Como earlier this year Credit: BackGrid Returning to the show that November, she said: "I'm so happy to be here. I feel like I've missed it so much. It's been crazy because my daughter Belle was a wonderful surprise, but what that meant was I had to fit my filming schedule into a very short period of time. "So I've just been up and down the country with Sort Your Life Out and filming another show, Bricking It, so I haven't been able to even get into town.' Stacey Solomon launches into huge rant after failing to win Bafta as she admits 'upset and devastation' Now history is repeating itself and it's little wonder Stace can't find a moment in her schedule. Packed schedule In the last six weeks she's been travelling the world, launching her latest Rehab hair care product in Lake Como and holidaying with her eldest son Zach, 17, in Paris. She's also been busy working on the new series of her BBC show, Sort Your Life Out. And pals believe Stacey, who has been married to TV star Joe Swash since 2022, may have more on her mind than just business. 'Everyone thinks she and Joe will try for another baby,' a source said. 'Stacey absolutely loves being a mum and she's openly spoken about adding to the family, so no one would be surprised if she wanted to go that route.' As well as sons Zach and Leighton, 13, from previous relationships, Stacey shares Rex, six, Rose, three, and two-year-old Belle with Joe, who himself has a son, Harry, 17. 6 The Solomon-Swash family (minus Joe's older son Harry) Credit: Instagram 6 Stacey & Joe's BBC reality show was a hit with viewers and has been renewed for a second season Credit: PA In the lead-up to the launch of their reality show, Stacey & Joe, the couple discussed the possibility of more children in the future. 'Me and Stacey are so blessed that we are able to have kids and have this amazing family, but I'd love to have one more,' Joe said. Stacey, while not as keen, didn't shut the idea down completely, admitting she'd prefer to wait until her current brood are slightly older. 'I would love to, maybe when they're a bit older, and they're all independent,' she said. 'If we're lucky enough and if we were privileged enough to have a baby then, that's when I would consider it. But right now, I'm finally feeling like I'm recovering from three consecutive births. It's a lot." Despite being one of the biggest stars on TV, getting nominated for a BAFTA and having both her current shows on the BBC, Stacey failed to make it onto the corporation's recent rich list, where Gary Linieker reigned as the highest paid employee at the company for the eighth year in a row. BAFTA nomination And pals reckon her ambition to make it on there one day will drive a lot of her upcoming decisions. 'Stacey will have been disappointed to miss out on being named one of the BBC's richest stars, but if anything it will fuel her fire," the source added. "She's smart and already looking for the next opportunity. Her brand is very much centred around her family and being a mum, it's what she's most known and loved for, so that could potentially sway her decision to have another baby.' 6 Stacey's brand is centred around family and being a mum Credit: PA Stacey Solomon's career so far Stacey Solomon has been a familiar face on viewers' screens for over a decade. Let's take a look back at her career. The X Factor (2009): Stacey competed in series six of long-running ITV singing competition The X Factor. During her time in the show, she was mentored by Danni Minogue in the 'Girls' category. The star finished in third place, behind Joe McElderry and Olly Murs. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (2010); In late 2010, Stacey headed to the infamous I'm A Celeb Aussie jungle. After 21 days, she triumphed to win the tenth series. It was through I'm A Celeb that she met future husband Joe Swash - who'd won two years earlier and was hosting the ITV2 spinoff. Celebrity Juice (2011―2013, 2016―2019): The star appeared as a panellist on 21 episodes of the comedy panel game show hosted by Keith Lemon. Stacey was a regular in the 21st series, broadcast in 2019. Loose Women (2016 - present): Stacey has been a permanent panel member of the daytime show since 2016. She previously made guest appearances in 2011 and 2012. Sort Your Life Out (2022 -present): This BBC show sees Stacey, with the help of an expert team, transform participants' living spaces after removing clutter. As The Sun recently reported, Stacey's been raking in a massive £57,000 every month through her various brand deals and has accumulated a wealth of almost £10million. While only a small portion of that comes from her TV shows - she's also making big bucks thanks to deals with Asda and Primark, as well as her hugely successful Rehab hair care range - she is undoubtedly happiest on the box. 'Stacey and Joe's reality show has been a big win for them and the BBC and she'd love to repeat the magic,' our source continued. 'Another series of that and maybe something else focused on parenting would be a recipe for success. "Watch this space but when she does find the time she will use it wisely - but that might mean we won't be seeing her back on Loose Women any time soon.'
