Konkona Sen Sharma says there is ‘motherhood penalty' for working moms in industry: ‘Fathers become senior'
Actor Konkona Sen Sharma is gearing up for the release of Anurag Basu's Metro In Dino. In an interview with Firstpost, the actor shared her take on maintaining a work-life balance in the industry and what needs to change. During the interview, Konkona said, 'I genuinely want to say that in today's day and age, there is a certain motherhood penalty in any industry, which happens. It's called the fatherhood premium and the motherhood penalty. Because what happens is that fathers, as they have children and they become more and more senior, they earn more and more. But for women with every child, there is a financial setback because you're not able to kind of participate in the way society expects you to or for that matter what the office work demands.'
She went on to add, 'Now what's going to happen ultimately is that women are not incentivized to have children at all because it's becoming more and more difficult. You know, to participate in the work life, and to be a good mother at the same time is becoming more and more difficult. So, I feel that this is something that eventually the governments will have to kind of change policies for working mothers. Otherwise it's not going to happen.'
Konkona got married to Ranvir Shorey in 2010. They separated in 2015 and divorced in 2020. They have a son named Haroon.
Metro In Dino also stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, and Anupam Kher. The film is scheduled to release on July 4.

Anurag Basu credits Irrfan for Metro In Dino: This film is a tribute to him and KK
Filmmkaer Anurag Basu recently spoke about his upcoming film 'Metro In Dino' and how it is an ode to the late actor Irrfan and singer KK. The film is set to hit theatres on July 4, 2025. The director shared that both the artistes were integral to the 2007 original 'Life In A Metro'. Basu credited Irrfan for proposing the idea of making a an interview with News18 Showsha, Anurag said, 'Post 'Jagga Jasoos', Irrfan and I were talking about a sequel to 'Life In A Metro'. He, in fact, had given me the idea to start working on it. He told me, 'Metro 2 banaate hai.' He told me about it much later, not immediately after the first film.'Back in 2017, there were reports suggesting that Irrfan had already signed on to be part of the second film. However, Basu clarified that 'Metro In Dino' was never initially planned as part of a trilogy of hyperlinked films. 'I didn't have any plans of making a trilogy. I was scared if 'Life In A Metro' would even work. It was something very different. But after that, I got the hang of it. I started enjoying writing hyperlinked films. Then 'Ludo' happened,' the director of 'Gangster' and 'Kites' That said, 'Metro In Dino' might mark the end of this storytelling style, at least for now. 'I'm not going to make such films anymore because it's like writing four films in one, and that takes too much time. But while it's challenging, it's also fun. The best part is getting to work with a whole team of actors. 'Hyperlinked films mein yeh ek maza hai. But as of now, 'Metro In Dino' feels like the final one. That's not to say that there's no possibility of making another hyperlinked film but even if I do, I don't think it's going to happen very soon,' Anurag added. The filmmaker also reflected on how dating and relationships have evolved since 2007. Citing the storyline of Irrfan and Konkona Sensharma's characters from the original film, he noted how that story was ahead of its time. 'Their characters had met online, on a matrimonial site. A lot has changed in these 18 years, and we should come to terms with it. People are less expressive in person now. They speak their hearts out, virtually. They can convey all their emotions in a true form online. Aaj kal one-to-one mein nahi hota hai (In today's time, face-to-face things don't happen),' he a personal note, Anurag also shared what love has taught him over the years. 'What love has taught me is that I've started seeing the world and stories of people from a woman's point of view. Movie Review: Metro… In Dino — When City Lights Meet Quiet Hearts
Some movies feels like a distinct aching memory with feels like reality, Metro In Dino is such a film, its raw, real, authentic and deeply rooted and emotional. The film doesn't draw a forced dramatic picture, but it is breath organically and allows audience to relate with it, with its characters and their flawed, yet relatable intellect and lives. The film parts with one simple notion, what if you simply paused and felt? The Bengali showman, Anurag Basu is back with his signature touch, weaving an authentic tales by intertwining lives across a shared emotional map, but this time, it's more subtle, and reflective. A spiritual follow-up to Life in a Metro trades intensity for intimacy, and offers something we have never seen before or felt before! The film flows through several stories: Monty (Pankaj) and Kajol (Konkona) live in a marriage worn thin by time. Kajol's mother Shibani (Neena Gupta), is full of laughter on the outside, but inside, years of being sidelined weigh her down. Akash (Ali Fazal) and Shruti (Fatima Sana Shaikh) portray a love fraying at the edges, stretched too far by distance and disappointment. And amid this beautifully fractured ensemble, we meet Chumki (Sara Ali Khan) and Parth (Aditya Roy Kapur), strangers caught in an unpredictable equation of mistrust and maybe-love. The entire ensemble is rich and seasoned, but it's the Sara Ali Khan, who steal the show with her transformative role. The emotional landscape and dealing in the film is the real winner, characters unspoken generational trauma, midlife crisis, tired hope and loneliness, everything feels heartbreakingly familiar and real. The performances are outstanding and brilliant, but Sara Ali Khan shines above everyone else! The first half is quick, but the film slows down in the second half, and some stories land harder than others, this intentional narrative trick doesn't feels less like a flaw and more like life itself, which is unpredictable, unresolved, and always in moving forward. The film is far from being a spectacle, it is a slow dance with reality, and allows you to feel and breath with it, the film may not change your life, but it might remind you of something you forgot along the way. And if you're still wondering whether Sara Ali Khan can surprise you — this film is your quiet yes.
