Scrimmage report: Palisades passing duo is ready to light up City Section football

There's no need to scout Palisades' football team this fall. Everyone knows the passing duo of quarterback Jack Thomas and receiver Demare Dezeurn is going to be electric.
Dezeurn, who ran a 10.32 100 meters as a sophomore last season at Bishop Alemany, made his Palisades debut in a scrimmage on Thursday. Several times he was used as a decoy, opening the door for receiver Harrison Carter to show his stuff.
Palisades kept Dezeurn under wraps. 'We're not showing anything today,' Thomas said.
Palisades opens against Washington Prep on Thursday. The team still doesn't have a campus field because of repairs being made after the Palisades fire. Santa Monica College will be the site for several home games.
Thomas is already predicting the Dolphins will play Birmingham to decide the City Section Open Division championship. Dezeurn still needs to be cleared by the City Section to play next week.
Chaminade faced Santa Margarita in a scrimmage on Thursday, and Eagles coach David Machuca said he was very happy with the play of his team's offensive line considering that Santa Margarita's strength could be its defensive line.
Chaminade faces Oaks Christian in an opener next week, with Santa Margarita playing Mission Viejo.
The Sierra Canyon-Corona Centennial scrimmage matched two top 10 teams and exposed issues both teams will need to improve on.
Sierra Canyon still has a competition going at quarterback, and that's the position likely to decide how far the Trailblazers might advance in the Division 1 playoffs. Their defensive line is one of the best in the Southland. Centennial had trouble running the ball, something that needs to improve since the Huskies have a three-game stretch against Servite, Santa Margarita and Mater Dei in nonleague games.
Birmingham's powerful soccer program has supplied three kickers to the football program, giving coach Jim Rose options with special teams. Kicking field goals will definitely be an option.
Making adjustments for multi-sport athletes, such as letting them leave early for a club practice, is something coaches must do if they want to attract the best athletes in school.

How Tiger Woods put Justin Thomas ‘in his place' at East Lake

ATLANTA – It felt like a full-circle moment for Justin Thomas Tuesday at the Tour Championship. In 2017, Thomas won the FedExCup but finished second to Xander Schauffele at the Tour Championship, an anomaly that – at least in part – prompted the PGA Tour to introduce a starting-strokes format at the finale. As part of an overhaul of the Tour Championship this year the Tour ended starting strokes, which gave the post-season points leaders incremental leads heading into the finale and combined the individual title and the season-long race into one competition. It was telling that when asked his favorite memory from East Lake, Thomas didn't pick winning the season-long title in 2017. Instead, it was a predictable exchange with Tiger Woods in 2020, the year after Woods had won the Tour Championship for his 80th Tour title. 'Probably my best memory, it would have been 2020. I remember playing here, playing a practice round and walking down 18 and FaceTiming Tiger and, because he wasn't here and didn't qualify, just showing him how the course was and how great it was, and then he acted like his phone cut out and then he called me back two minutes later with [the Masters] green jacket on,' Thomas laughed. 'I remember that very, very, very vividly. Just a typical conversation of thinking I am having some kind of upper edge, and I get shut down and put in my place pretty quickly.'

Trio of Oklahoma Sooners named to Coaches Preseason All-SEC teams

The 2025 college football season is about to get underway and the Sooners enter the year with something to prove after being left outside the US LBM Coaches Poll a couple of weeks ago. The Sooners look like a legitimate bounce-back candidate after a big offseason. Oklahoma has talent in all three phases of the game, and it was recognized by the coaches in the SEC. Ahead of the start of the season, three Sooners were named to the Coaches' Preseason All-SEC teams. Transfer running back Jaydn Ott was named to the second team. He's expected to lead the Oklahoma Sooners running back room and is looking for a resurgent season after injuries limited him in 2024. He was electric at Cal, racking up 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in three season. Texas A&M's Le'Veon Moss and Texas' Quintrevion Wisner were named to the first team. Also on the second team is Oklahoma's star pass rusher, R Mason Thomas. Thomas is coming off of a breakout season in 2024, where he had nine sacks, six of which came in SEC play. He was a problem for opposing offenses, often commanding double and triple teams. Going into his fourth season, Thomas is one of the best pass rushers in college football and will be a force for Brent Venables defense again. Also making the All-SEC teams was long snapper Ben Anderson. He's handled all of Oklahoma's long-snapping duties each of the last two seasons and has been fantastic. The red-shirt junior was named to the Patrick Mannely Award watch list earlier this month, which is given to the nation's best long snapper. Missing the cut was quarterback John Mateer. The quarterbacks selected to the Coaches All-SEC teams were LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, and Florida's D.J. Lagway. New York Giants activate Andrew Thomas from PUP list; Malik Nabers returns to practice

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Tuesday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center and did so with the addition of two offensive superstars and a talented rookie. Head coach Brian Daboll informed reporters that left tackle Andrew Thomas had passed his physical, was being activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, and would participate in practice. "Today was the day," Daboll said of Thomas. "We'll take it slow." Thomas was placed on injured reserve (IR) last season after suffering a Lisfranc injury that required surgery. He opened training camp on PUP and had not practiced to date. Daboll delivered additional positive news, revealing that wide receiver Malik Nabers, tight end Chris Manhertz and rookie running back Cam Skattebo would also return to practice. Nabers has been dealing with toe, shoulder, and back injuries, all of which are considered minor. He has not practiced since August 6. Skattebo, meanwhile, has been dealing with a hamstring injury and suffered a "setback" earlier this month. He has not suited up for either of the team's two preseason games. All three players are expected to be available for a Week 1 game against the Washington Commanders.
