Saquon Barkley silences the panic born from his recent retirement comments

Saquon Barkley silences the panic born from his recent retirement comments

USA Todaya day ago

Sometimes, statements are made, and it's almost like time stands still. Many have been studied in history. "That's one giant leap for mankind"... "I have a dream"... "Give me liberty or give me death"... The Philadelphia Eagles have a few as well.
Quotes heard by great sports stars won't be placed in the same category, but they were just as impactful when we first heard them. "We all we got. We all we need"... "Hungry dogs run faster"... "I had a purpose before anyone had an opinion"...
Recently, seemingly out of nowhere, we heard another. We all love Saquon Barkley, but we didn't like what he said. In a conversation with fellow fan-favorite Chris Long, 'Saquads' discussed his mortality and possible retirement: "I'll probably be one of those guys that (will announce retirement) out of nowhere. I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah, it's over."
Hold on a doggone second! Where in the heck did that come from?
Everyone knows good things don't last forever. At some point, Saquon will call it a career, but he's only played one year in green. He can't hang up the cleats already!
Everyone's been waiting to hear from him ever since. Following Philadelphia's mandatory minicamp practice, that opportunity finally came.
Saquon Barkley clears up the retirement confusion
Philadelphia's mandatory minicamp session came later in the afternoon, after 2 pm EST. Head coach Nick Sirianni met with the media. Attendance at the ensuing Eagles practice was 100%. Players spoke with the media afterward. First up was Saquon Barkley.
Though none of the questions he asked were surprising, it did come as a shock that it took so long to get to the retirement question. Eventually, he was finally asked about what he said, and thank goodness, he offered an answer that should make every Eagles fan and media member smile from ear to ear.
Whew... That was close. There was hope that would be his answer. After all, he signed a three-year deal upon joining the Eagles. He signed a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension that included $36 million guaranteed and up to $15 million more in incentives this past March.
Saquon has been a revelation. He makes one ask what might have been had he joined the Eagles sooner. We'll never know the answer to that question, but here's what we can bank on. We're overjoyed that he's on the roster now.
In just one season, he joined the 2,000-yard club, won the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year Award, and helped deliver another Lombardi Trophy. Everyone has gotten greedy. Everyone wants more. Fortunately, it looks like Birds fans everywhere will get that wish granted.

Zack Baun hints at the Eagles defense being even better than top ranked unit from 2024

Zack Baun hints at the Eagles defense being even better than top ranked unit from 2024 During a recent appearance on The Exciting Mics podcast, All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun told Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship that the Eagles defense is miles ahead of where they were last year The Eagles were one of the most physical teams in the NFL last season, and their change in identity began with their late-season collapse in 2023. Vic Fangio entered as defensive coordinator, while Howie Roseman signed Saquon Barkley, Zack Baun, and Mekhi Becton, among others, to help bring physicality and attitude to a Super Bowl contender. Fangio's addition led to more padded and physical practices, which resulted in a 10-2 team and eight straight wins to start the previous season. Fangio's presence helped the Eagles become the No. 1 defense in the NFL, and the defensive coordinator was a finalist for the Assistant Coach of the Year award. During a recent appearance on The Exciting Mics podcast, All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun told Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship that the Eagles' defense is miles ahead of where they were last year. The defense has undergone an overhaul after defensive tackle Milton Williams (New England), Josh Sweat (Arizona), cornerback Darius Slay (Pittsburgh), cornerback Isaiah Rodgers (Minnesota), and linebacker Oren Burks (Cincinnati) all departed via free agency. In year one under Fangio, the Eagles (278.4 ypg) led the league in total defense for the seventh time in team history, having previously accomplished the feat in 1991, 1981, 1953, 1949, 1945, and 1944 (excludes the 1943 Steagles). Philadelphia was the second team since the 1970 merger to feature the NFL's rushing champion on offense while showcasing the league's No. 1 defense, joining the 1992 Cowboys (won Super Bowl XXVII). Philadelphia ranked 1st in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (174.2) for the second time in the last three years (also 2022, 179.8). Furthermore, the Eagles finished with the NFL lead in defensive points allowed per game (16.9 — their best figure since 15.8 in 2008), opponent three-and-out percentage (39.0%), and FFs (18, tied). Including playoffs, the Eagles were +27 in turnovers since Week 8. In that span, Philadelphia has 138 points off turnovers (6.6 per game).

What I'm hearing about Cam York and other Flyers offseason storylines

Noah Cates and Tyson Foerster, key Philadelphia Flyers pending restricted free agents, have been re-signed to what seem like reasonable contract extensions. Cates inked a four-year, $16 million deal on June 3, while Foerster agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million extension on May 29. Both are viewed internally as key pieces of the core group moving forward. Advertisement But now, attention now turns toward another potential core piece: defenseman Cam York, 24, also a pending restricted free agent. The Flyers have been tight-lipped about contract talks since the new management group took over. General manager Daniel Briere seemingly has made it a priority to not negotiate deals through the media, as evidenced by the Cates and Foerster announcements coming without any notice, just as the eight-year Owen Tippett extension did on Jan. 26, 2024. But a source close to York told The Athletic this week that the club and the player are still having conversations, which began last month. Both a short-term deal and a longer-team deal are still in play. We also know, as reported here previously, is that the Flyers and York had contract discussions in the early part of last season before they broke off in late November. In other words, and with the caveat that it could change any at moment, it's been a drawn-out process. And, it suggests that the Flyers and York finding common ground has been a complicated task — much more so than it was with Cates and Foerster. Perhaps that's no surprise. It was, to put it mildly, an odd season for York, who finished the 2023-24 season as arguably the Flyers' best defenseman over the final couple of months but saw his production drop from 30 points in 82 games last season to 17 points in 66 games in 2024-25. A shoulder injury on Oct. 26 forced him from the lineup for approximately one month and adversely affected his game after he returned. As York acknowledged in March: 'It was tough at the beginning (after the injury) to get adjusted and feel comfortable with it.' But, York's struggles after his injury lasted longer than anyone would have liked — particularly then-coach John Tortorella. And, in that vein, there's reason to believe that there may not be a player on the Flyers' roster who will benefit more from a coaching change to Rick Tocchet than York. Advertisement Part of the reason York's production dropped this season is because of the coaching staff's odd, steadfast refusal to put him on the power play, which finished 30th in the league. While defenseman such as Emil Andrae, Egor Zamula and Rasmus Ristolainen got long looks on the top unit, York skated less than 10 minutes on the power play for the entire season. York was scratched twice by Tortorella, too, on Dec. 19 and March 8. After the second scratching, York bemoaned the lack of communication from the coach. And, of course, there was the incident in Toronto with Tortorella that seemingly hastened the coach's dismissal just two days later. York's punishment for that, as issued by Briere, was to dress for a game on March 27 — the first under interim coach Brad Shaw — without taking a single shift. It was a stunning public embarrassment, although York said all the right things in his first media availability after everything transpired. But, after the season, York also acknowledged that after Shaw took over, he was 'able to play with a little bit more freedom. … As a player, that's everything, in a way.' Perhaps the Flyers want to see a little more from York, and how he performs under Tocchet, before committing to him long term. Some other odds and ends: • A team source rejected any suggestion that the Flyers might be interested in a trade for Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague — who, like York, is left-handed but who has much greater size (6-foot-6, 245 pounds). Don't expect the Flyers to be involved in discussions about Hague moving forward. • Multiple team sources said they had no knowledge of any deal with 24-year-old forward prospect Maxim Shabanov. A report out of Russia last week indicated the Flyers had signed Shabanov out of the KHL. One of the sources, though, indicated that the club remains very interested in adding him and they are hopeful it will happen. Advertisement So, who is Shabanov? Here's Corey Pronman's assessment of him from February: 'Shabanov has been one of the top scorers in the KHL this season as a 24-year-old. He's an excellent skater with the speed and edge work of an NHL player. He has good puck skills and offensive sense, and makes a lot of plays at full speed. Shabanov is also a mid-range shooting threat who can score goals versus good goaltenders. The issue with him will come down to size. He's about 5-foot-8 and, while talented, it's debatable whether it's the special variety of talent you need at his size to make it to the top league.' • A team source reiterated that the club is not going to be in the market for any big-money free agents this summer. So, no, the Flyers will not be pursuing Mitch Marner. As for Sam Bennett, I do believe the Flyers would have been interested had Bennett not gone on another remarkable playoff run. As it stands now, they figure he'll probably be out of their price range. • The Flyers will be adding another assistant coach to Tocchet's staff, which now includes Jaroslav Svejkovsky and Jay Varady. But they're in no rush to do so. Don't expect that to happen until July. (Photo of Cam York: Emilee Chinn / Getty Images)
