Mariners, Diamondbacks May Swing Another Trade After Josh Naylor Deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks came into the trade season with the expectation that they would be among the biggest sellers in baseball. Going into Thursday, there had only been a handful of trades made this year. Beyond the Rafael Devers blockbuster, none of these trades involved any game-changing players.
On Thursday, the Diamondbacks changed that.
Arizona traded first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for prospects Ashton Izzi and Brandyn Garcia. Both prospects were ranked in the top 20 of Seattle's system, per MLB Pipeline.
This trade works for both sides. The Diamondbacks are able to add some pitching prospects to their system, which is a spot in the farm that Arizona still needs to upgrade. The Mariners are able to land the first baseman they need for their lineup. First base has been a weak spot for months now, and Naylor's presence adds a new wrinkle alongside Cal Raleigh in Seattle.
But this isn't the last time these two sides will likely talk trades this season. In fact, they could swing another trade in the next few days.

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 23: Christian Walker #8 of the Houston Astros talks to former teammate Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks while on third base during the game at Chase Field on July 23, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreSlugger Eugenio Suárez has been closely linked to the Mariners this season. Seattle is expected to be one of the more aggressive teams in his trade sweepstakes.
While the Diamondbacks could have traded the two pieces (Naylor and Suárez) at the same time to the Mariners, it makes sense to hold onto Suárez so that a bidding war can ensue.
Now, the Mariners can continue to hunt Suárez in a trade, but other teams will have their fair chance to land him, too. It's a very smart move from the Diamondbacks, and it shows their front office isn't rushing anything.
Don't be surprised if these two sides are linked again in the coming days. With the trade deadline around a week away, Seattle and Arizona will likely remain in trade talks until Suárez comes off the board.

Season series: First meeting; Tigers won 2 of 3 last season The Diamondbacks opened their 9-game road trip with a rough series loss in Pittsburgh, managing just 1 run total across the 3-game set against the Pirates. They won the opener 1-0, but were shut out 2-0 Saturday and 6-0 Sunday. Arizona lost the finale as +134 underdogs as the Under (7.5) cashed. The Tigers ended their 6-game skid Sunday with a 10-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays as -113 home favorites as the Over (8.5) cashed. Starter Jack Flaherty delivered 6 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts and 2B Gleyber Torres powered the offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Diamondbacks at Tigers picks and predictions Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 5 Moneyline BET DIAMONDBACKS (+110). The Diamondbacks are in a favorable spot to take Monday's series opener in Detroit. Arizona sends Rodriguez to the mound, who's been solid on the road, allowing just 5 earned runs over his last 3 road starts (14 2/3 IP). He's coming off a strong outing, holding Houston scoreless through 6 1/3 innings. On the other side, Detroit rookie Melton makes his second career start—and first at Comerica Park—after giving up 6 earned runs in 5 innings in his debut. That home crowd pressure won't make things easier. The Tigers have dropped 7 of their last 10 games at home and enter the week struggling at the plate, hitting an MLB-worst .197 over the last 15 days. While Detroit looked better on Sunday, it's tough to trust this offense to stay hot. At plus odds, the value lies with Arizona to grab the series opener on the road. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I'm going to keep my wager to the run line. Over/Under BET OVER 9 (+100). The Over has hit in 7 of the last 8 games between the Tigers and Diamondbacks, and recent trends support more scoring Monday. The Over is 3-2-1 in Detroit's last 6 games and has cashed in 4 of Rodriguez's last 6 starts. Expect another high-scoring affair in this series opener. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Issac Paredes injury update sparks Astros to check in on NL West power hitter
The MLB trade deadline is days away, and teams will be looking to make deals that can push them into the postseason and improve their chances of winning a World Series in 2025. One team looking to bolster their squad are the Houston Astros. Moreover, they have a major hole at third base with the injury to Issac Paredes and the Astros aren't optimistic that they'll have the Mexican player soon. Speaking on the team's pregame show with SportsTalk790, Astros general manager Dana Brown said Ronel Paredes' hamstring injury is 'a little more severe than we initially thought.' Brown added that Paredes will be seeking a second opinion from doctors. With this in mind, The Athletic's Chandler Rome reports that Houston are at least doing its due diligence with Eugenio Suárez as the Arizona Diamondbacks veteran appears to be the marquee player on the trade market this deadline. 'Suárez is the most straightforward way to address Paredes' potential season-long absence and, according to multiple league sources, the Astros have at least checked in with the Arizona Diamondbacks to make their interest known,' Rome wrote. 'Whether Houston has enough prospect capital to compete with Suárez's slew of other suitors is a legitimate question.' MORE:Astros receive discouraging injury update on All-Star infielder While most contending teams would welcome Suárez's 36 home runs and 87 RBI so far this season into their starting lineup, Rome questions whether it's the right fit since the Astros already have several right-handed hitters and lack left-handed ones. 'Another is perhaps more pertinent: Is Suárez even an ideal fit for the Astros' roster?' Rome added. 'Brown has not hidden the fact that he is searching for a left-handed bat, a stance he reiterated Sunday. Suárez hits right-handed and is strikeout-prone, problematic for an offense that — at full strength — has no balance and prides itself on putting the ball in play.' Houston have a few days to figure out their third base situation and whether or not they can add another left-handed bat into their lineup.
