END OF THE LINE Millions of BT, Sky & Vodafone broadband customers warned key service is closing down as part of switchover in 163 areas
MILLIONS of Brits have been warned of a major upgrade to their broadband service as part of a huge switchover to boost speeds.
BT-owned Openreach has revealed a further 163 new exchange locations where it plans to stop the sale of traditional copper-based phone and broadband.

Instead, customers will be encouraged to switch to ultrafast full fibre.
The move will affect a number of providers who rely on Openreach's cables - including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Vodafone - and their customers.
Openreach has given the companies a year's notice that it will no longer be selling legacy analogue products and services where full fibre becomes available to a majority of premises.
With 163 exchange locations earmarked for switchover, the total now stands at over 1,500 across the UK.
The new bunch covers around 1.6million premises across the UK.
And by the start of June, more than eight million premises will have full fibre available and copper products cannot be sold.
"We're moving to a digital world and Openreach is helping with that transformation by rolling out ultrafast, ultra-reliable, and future-proofed digital full fibre across the UK," said James Lilley, Openreach's managed customer migrations manager.
"This game-changing technology will become the backbone of our economy for decades to come, supporting every aspect of our public services, businesses, industries, and daily lives.
"Already, our full fibre network is available to 18 million homes and businesses, with 6.5 million premises currently taking a service.
"The programme is a critical part of ensuring that the UK's communication infrastructure is ready to meet the demands of the future."
THINK TWICE BEFORE SHARING YOUR WI-FI
It comes as regulator Ofcom announced that full-fibre broadband is on course to become available to almost the entire country by 2027.
Bosses have shared proposals to boost competition in the sector so smaller operators have a better chance.
"The roll out of full fibre across the UK is a British infrastructure success story," said Natalie Black, Ofcom's Group Director for Networks and Communications.
"Four years ago, less than a quarter of UK homes and offices had access, and it now stands at nearly seven in 10.
"But we do not take this momentum for granted, and today we are setting out how we can work with the sector to finish the job.
"It means that people and businesses in nearly all corners of the country will get faster, better broadband, fuelling economic growth and enabling technologies like artificial intelligence to benefit everyone."

Fresh Florian Wirtz transfer talks emerge as Leverkusen eye Liverpool star
Liverpool are already making moves in the transfer market as they seek more star power to bolster Arne Slot's title-winning squad ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 campaign Liverpool mean business in the summer transfer window. And after swiftly securing a replacement for the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds are now closing in on a British record transfer. Arne Slot and Co are in a strong position after winning the Premier League and will be out to defend their domestic crown. The Dutchman will be given the funds to strengthen the squad after predominantly working with the same group of players he inherited from Jurgen Klopp last summer. While the focus is on incomings, a number of outgoings are expected, too. Darwin Nunez could be the biggest name to depart with Liverpool weighing up a move for a new No.9. With things heating up, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news and gossip from in and around Anfield... READ MORE: Fresh Wirtz talks We're getting closer to a deal but talks between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are ongoing over the finer details of the monstrous package that will see Florian Wirtz head to Anfield. The Reds will not be meeting the £126million price tag that Leverkusen have slapped on their sought-after star. But they are prepared to offer the Bundesliga outfit a guaranteed £100m, with the deal likely to eclipse the current British transfer record with add-ons. Talks are set to continue with a deal edging closer... Leverkusen eye Quansah There has been plenty of speculation that players could be included in a deal to get Wirtz over the line and Bayer Leverkusen have now been credited with an interest in Jarrel Quansah. The Athletic have confirmed that the £40million-rated centre half is indeed on the German outfit's radar, with Leverkusen in the market for a new defender. Any deal for Quansah would be separate to the blockbuster one involving Wirtz, who will likely become the most expensive Premier League player of all-time should a move to Anfield be finalised. Leverkusen are in the market for a new central defender after losing Jonathan Tah on a free transfer to Bayern Munich. Kerkez gets green light for move Milos Kerkez has been given the green light to join Liverpool - by his Bournemouth team-mate, Justin Kluivert. Kerkez is known to be the Reds' top target as they seek another left-back. Talks over a deal with one of the Cherries' star performers are ongoing with Kerkez keen on joining Arne Slot's side. And Kluivert has now told Voetbal Primeur: 'He'll probably go there. I hope so for him. He hasn't really said goodbye yet, but I hope he'll make it happen there.'

Martin Lewis MSE names 5 major banks offering Brits free £175 bonus
Martin Lewis' MSE website has revealed how cash-strapped Brits can earn up to £200 for simply opening a new bank account, as five major lenders continue to offer lucrative incentives Brits are being urged to make the most of lucrative bank bonuses worth up to £200 - and they aren't just for new customers. If you're still feeling the financial wrath of 'Awful April', which saw a slew of household bills spiral, moving banks could help alleviate some of the pressure. It might sound too good to be true, but many high-street lenders actually offer huge incentives for new (and sometimes even existing) customers to lure them in. Often, this includes free cash bonuses, often referred to as legal bank 'bribes', or perks such as access to cashback deals, 0 per cent overdrafts, and high interest rate savings accounts. However, there will always be a slew of criteria customers need to meet in order to be eligible for the rewards. READ MORE: Tesco introduces huge Clubcard perk in car parks but there's a catch Martin Lewis ' MSE website states there are currently five banks offering switch bonuses this month, with one particular lender offering a hefty £200 free bonus. "Switching's usually quick and easy," MSE states. "In Martin's recent social media poll, 90 per cent of the 5,500 who'd switched said it was easy and hassle-free." First Direct - free £175 As previously reported, First Direct is currently offering newbies £175 if they open up an account using the Current Account Switch Service. Within 45 days of opening the account, you'll need to transfer at least two Direct Debits or standing orders, deposit £1,000, make five or more debit card payments, and log on to digital banking. First Direct is also offering a £250 interest-free overdraft (subject to status) and access to its 7.00 per cent AER/gross Regular Saver account. However, this offer is only available to new customers - and excludes those who have previously held a First Direct product or those who have opened an HSBC current account on or after January 1, 2018. Co-op Bank - free £100 The Co-operative Bank is still offering £100 for new customers, as long you deposit £1,000, have two or more Direct Debits, you register for online/mobile banking, and make at least 10 debit card transactions within the first 30 days of switching. Co-op warns that deposits or transactions made prior to the switch completion will not count towards the £100 criteria. You can also get £25 for three months (worth £75) by continuing to actively use your current account. This requires customers to deposit £1,000 or more, make ten or more card or digital wallet transactions, and have two active Direct Debits. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for one of the months, you can still meet it in one of the following months. TSB - free £100 TSB is another bank offering newbies a £100 welcome bonus for completing a full switch to their Spend and Save account. You'll need to log into the TSB Mobile Banking App and make at least five payments on your debit card before July 19, 2025, to earn the bonus (which will be paid between August 2-16, 2025). Customers can also earn £15 cashback each month for up to six months, which is worth a whopping £90. To qualify for this separate bonus, you'll need to make 20 or more debit card payments in a calendar month (pending payments don't count) and the cashback will be paid into your account the next calendar month. Santander - free £180 Santander is offering customers using the Current Account Switch Service £180 when opening up a Santander Edge current account. Similar to the other banks, you'll need to have at least two Direct Debits and pay in £1,500 within 60 days of submitting your initial switch request. The generous offer isn't available for anyone who has held a current account with Santander on January 1, 2025, or if you've previously made use of a Santander switcher incentive. However, there is a big catch with this account, as you will have to pay in £3 per month to maintain it, and need to pay in £500 into your account each month. Still, with one per cent cashback on energy bills, council tax, broadband, TV, mobile and water bills (maxed at £10 per month) it could still be worth paying for the account. According to MSE, Santander is also offering one per cent cashback on supermarket, fuel and train spending. This is capped at £10 per month and is only valid until September 9, 2025. Nationwide - free £200 Arguably saving the best until last, Nationwide is offering a whopping £200 for those opening a Nationwide FlexDirect account. However, this freebie is only for those who already have a Nationwide personal savings account (including cash ISAs) or residential mortgage who are switching a different current account from another bank. You'll need to be a qualifying member as of March 31, 2025, have at least two Direct Debits, pay in at least £1,000 and make one debit card payment within the first 31 days of opening the account. *This article does not constitute financial advice. Impressive 425-miles UK train line with 11 stops branded 'Eurostar of Scotland'
Brits will soon be able to hop on board and travel more than 400 miles from London to the historic city of Stirling, thanks to a new railway expansion slated to launch in 2026 A huge railway expansion touted as the 'Eurostar of Scotland' is slated to launch next year - spanning a whopping 425 miles from London. Rail operator Lumo recently announced it had successfully secured five Class 222 six-car trains to link London Euston directly to Stirling - a historic city in central Scotland. The new route, which aims to be up and running as early as Spring 2026, will also stop at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet (serving Coatbridge), Greenfaulds (serving Cumbernauld) and Larbert. Lumo says the move will 'enhance travel choice and connectivity' for passengers along the central belt of Scotland, and that its new route will run five times a day each way. This particular route is already shared by Avanti West Coast, LNER and TransPennine Express - but Lumo will reportedly be the first provider not subsidised by the government. Zoe Adjey, senior lecturer at the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality at the University of East London, told the Metro that this will likely make tickets must 'cheaper'. "The service enhancement will significantly improve the passenger experience, especially compared to air travel," she added. "Air travel requires an initial transit to one of London's airports, followed by a two-hour wait for the flight, then a two-hour flight time. In contrast, rail travel involves just a quick journey to Euston station, followed by a five-hour train journey with WiFi, refreshments, and enhanced onboard services." At the time of writing, direct trains from London to Stirling cost as much as £206.80 for an 'Anytime Single' ticket. However, they can be bought for as little as £81.80 if you're flexible with dates. Purchasing a railcard can also help lower the cost of train fares. However, these tend to only offer discounts on Off-Peak times, weekends, and bank holidays - which doesn't help out commuters reliant on the network. In an online statement, Martijn Gilbert of Lumo said: "Today's announcement underscores Lumo's commitment to growing Scotland's rail network, providing passengers with more affordable, fast, and convenient travel options. Our new service between Stirling and London has the potential to unlock significant economic opportunities for communities along the route, and we're proud to deliver this direct rail connectivity to towns previously overlooked by traditional rail services." Sue Webber MSP, a Conservative Transport spokesperson, also hailed the announcement - arguing it will bring a staggering £740m in economic benefits by 2032. "Crucially, this is being delivered not by government mandate, but through private sector innovation and open access investment," she added. "That's why I believe this model is one we should be championing. Lumo is not replacing existing services – it's adding capacity, increasing choice, and growing the market for everyone." *Prices based on LNER listings for Tuesday, July 1.
