EMSA releases first heat alert of 2025 for OKC
EMSA is now urging caution to people spending long amounts of time outside as future rain can cause even more humidity later on.
'It is time to be prepared,' EMSA paramedic Tori Thompson said.
'Prepared' is the key word with the newest heat alert.
'Let's be proactive and not reactive,' Thompson said.
EMSA crews responded to 7 heat related illness calls on Sunday alone. Three of those patients went to the hospital. Those numbers don't include what Thompson said she's seen at the Women's College World Series.
'I've been out there the last few days and we have had an extreme number of heat related illnesses out there,' Thompson said. 'The humidity is really taking a toll.'
To keep yourself right side up and out of one of EMSA's gurney's, hydration should be a number one priority.
'Let's start hydrating days before we know we're going to be outside for an extended amount of time,' Thompson said.

While outside, take breaks consistently, remember to wear light colored and loose fitting clothing and make sure you can find shade when you need it. If you have to, bring blankets to create that shade and don't forget to wear sunscreen.
'Don't leave anyone in a hot vehicle,' Thompson said. 'Make sure your pets have water. Don't leave them out for extended amount of time. That affects them just as it does us.'
According to Thompson, this is about the time of year they normally send their first alert out. It may take some time to get acclimated, but if you prepare properly it can save your life.
Don't drink too much alcohol or caffiene either. Now is also a good time to consistently check in on elderly neighbors to make sure they're doing OK.

Man charged with cyberstalking murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO's family
(NewsNation) — A 40-year-old upstate New York man was arrested Wednesday on federal cyberstalking charges for allegedly sending threatening voicemail messages to a family member of murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in the days following his December killing. Shane Daley of Galway was charged with cyberstalking after authorities say he made multiple harassing calls between Dec. 4 and 7, 2024, beginning just hours after Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan. According to a criminal complaint, Daley placed several calls to a work phone line used by a Thompson family member, leaving voicemails that expressed satisfaction over Thompson's death and said the victim and Thompson's children 'deserved to meet the same violent end.' Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024 in what authorities called a targeted attack. The killing sparked widespread attention and debate over the health insurance industry. Daley is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart in Albany. The FBI investigated the case.

2 dead after helicopter strikes power line and crashes into barge on Mississippi River
Two people were killed Thursday after the helicopter they were on board struck power lines crossing the Mississippi River and crashed onto a barge below, police said. The accident happened around 11 a.m. as the crew of the helicopter was conducting work on the power lines that cross the river in the area of St. Charles County, Missouri, State Patrol Cpl. Dallas Thompson told reporters. The helicopter crashed onto a barge in the river and there was a fire, but it was quickly extinguished, he said. No one on the barge was hurt. First responders evacuated the vicinity because the crash had sent a power line into the water, but it was later found that the wire was not live, Thompson said. The crash happened near Alton, Illinois, which is across the Missouri state line and the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, officials said. Wallace Maier was conducting a fishing charter in the area when the crash occurred, and he told NBC affiliate KSDK of St. Louis that it happened fast. "As soon as it touched it, there was just an explosion. It was just gone," Maier told the station. Utility company Ameren said that a contractor and its subcontractor were repairing and replacing tower lighting and marker balls on transmission lines in Madison County, Illinois, when the accident occurred. "We are saddened about today's tragic incident. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the victims' families and colleagues," a company spokesperson said in a statement. "We will cooperate with the investigation" The National Transportation Safety Board said that it will investigate the crash. It said the helicopter involved was a Hughes 369D.
