Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is jailed in Mexico after deportation
'I understand he was deported. I don't know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we're informed that he was going to arrive in Mexico,' Sheinbaum told reporters. It's unclear where Chavez Jr. has been held since being taken into ICE custody in Los Angeles ' Studio City last month. He has since been transferred to a border checkpoint and jailed at a federal maximum-security prison in Hermosillo, Sonora.
Chavez was picked up July 2 by ICE agents while riding his scooter in the upscale LA neighborhood of Studio City. 'Do you have anything in your shoes,' one agent is heard asking Chavez in Spanish in the clip recorded by Fox LA's Matthew Seedorff.
'No,' Chavez replied, before asking: 'Do you inform my lawyer when I have a warrant?' In its statement, DHS explained Chavez Jr's warrant related to 'his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives'. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said: 'This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate with an active arrest warrant for trafficking guns, ammunition, and explosives was arrested by ICE.
Chavez spent considerable time in his native Mexico and the US in recent years, but according to the Department of Homeland Security, his tourist visa expired in February of 2024. The agency further claimed Chavez filed several fraudulent statements while applying for permanent residence in April of 2024 after marrying Frida Muñoz, who is related to imprisoned Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. Chavez's father has openly spoken about his own relationships with the Sinaloa Cartel and, in particular, 'El Chapo.'
In a podcast with journalist Javier Alarcon in 2021, Chavez revealed: 'Not just El Chapo, I've met all the most wanted drug traffickers, like Amado Carrillo, El Azul [Esparragoza], and El Mayo [Zambada]. 'I know them all, and they've all been my friends, but that's about it. Those people, if you know them, are good people.' Donald Trump's DHS has accused the Biden White House of allowing Chavez to re-enter the US illegally.
'It is shocking the previous administration flagged this criminal illegal alien as a public safety threat, but chose to not prioritize his removal and let him leave and COME BACK into our country,' assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. 'Under President Trump, no one is above the law—including world-famous athletes. Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over.'
Chavez Jr. has fought more than 60 times as a professional but the 39-year-old barely laid a glove on Paul during their recent fight. Paul, who was fighting for the first time since his controversial clash with Mike Tyson, won by scores of 99-91, 97-93 and 98-92.

A new poll suggests California Democrats prefer Gavin Newsom over Kamala Harris in a potential 2028 presidential primary. The Politico survey shows the California governor leading Harris with 25% support compared to her 19% among registered Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning independents in California. Moreover, less than a quarter of California Democrats - just 23 percent - are very excited about the prospect of another Harris presidential bid. The survey shows a clear majority - 58 percent - are 'not excited' about Harris 2028. California Democrats are a bit more enthusiastic for Newsom though 51 percent are still 'not excited.' As Democrats remain leaderless following Joe Biden 's exit from the White House , Newsom has emerged as a leading candidate to unite the party against Donald Trump . Meanwhile, Harris has largely remained largely out of the political fray since losing the general election to Trump in 2024. 'There's affection for her, but maybe less confidence that she would be a strong candidate,' said Jack Citrin, a UC Berkeley political science professor who helped author the poll. The survey does show Newsom and Harris would both be leading contenders in the California primary. However, Harris' inability to garner clear support in her own home state is a doomsday scenario for her chances to grab the nomination. '(Newsom is) in the news everyday. If you think someone is running, you're more likely to support them,' Citrin added. Harris also indicated that she's not looking to jump back into the political machine following her landslide loss to Trump. In July, the former vice president said she will not run for California governor ending months of speculation. Harris has also not consistently opposed the Trump administration compared to other Democratic contenders. In contrast, Newsom has spent most of his remaining term as governor publicly resisting Trump's political agenda, including by redrawing California political districts and opposing ICE immigration raids. Additionally, California under Newsom is suing the administration over Trump federalizing the state's National Guard amid anti-Trump protests in LA over the summer. In the past, Harris has struggled at securing the nomination in competitive Democratic primaries. During the 2020 Democratic election primary, she ended her campaign before voting even began in the Iowa caucus.

Six severed heads have been dumped on a roadside in central Mexico - sparking terror in a region normally untouched by cartel violence. Six severed heads have been discovered on a road in central Mexico, sparking a major police investigation. The route where the remains were found connects the central states of Puebla and Tlaxcala. Police have yet to reveal a motive behind the killings or name the gangs who may have carried out the horror. A blanket was left at the scene with a chilling warning to rival gangs, according to local media. It was reportedly signed by a group calling itself La Barredora, which translates as "The Sweeper". 'La Barredora' happens to be the name of a little-known criminal gang that operates in the western state of Guerrero, however, there's no clarity on whether the cartel was behind the attack or their motive. The Tlaxcala Prosecutor's Office confirmed the victims were men and has launched a full investigation. Federal authorities are yet to comment. The shocking discovery comes in a region usually associated with fuel smuggling - known locally as 'huachicoleo' - a multi-billion dollar racket run by organised crime. It also follows a huge crackdown on fentanyl trafficking launched by President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration. Unlike states ravaged by cartel violence, Puebla and Tlaxcala, just over 100km from Mexico City, are seen as relatively peaceful. Tlaxcala accounts for just 0.5% of the 14,769 intentional homicides recorded nationwide between January and July, while Puebla makes up 3.4%. But both states have problems with gangs moving drugs, people and stolen fuel due to their central location. In 2022, Puebla authorities found 116 migrants crammed inside a truck. Elsewhere, in June this year, 20 men were found dead with gunshot wounds in cartel-ravaged Sinaloa, five of them decapitated. And in May, a gun attack at a Catholic festival in Guanajuato left seven young people dead. Meanwhile, in May, a shooting at a Catholic Church festival in the central state of Guanajuato resulted in the deaths of seven Mexican youths. Mexico has been gripped by soaring cartel violence since 2006, when the government first sent in the military. Hundreds of thousands have been killed and tens of thousands remain missing. Scottish Labour MSP Colin Smyth arrested and charged over indecent images
MSP Colin Smyth has been arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images, prompting his suspension from Scottish Labour. The South Scotland MSP was arrested on Tuesday and is due to appear in court at a later date. He was first elected as an MSP in 2016 and returned to Holyrood again at the 2021 election. The Scottish Parliament website now lists him as an Independent. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: 'On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, officers executed a warrant at a property on Marchfield Avenue, Dumfries. 'A 52-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images. He is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court at a later date.' A spokesman for Scottish Labour said: 'The whip has been removed from Colin Smyth MSP, pending an investigation. 'We cannot comment further on this matter while the investigation is ongoing.' It is understood the MSP was administratively suspended by Labour after the party became aware of the police investigation.
