Brookfield Zoo to welcome first bachelor gorilla troop this summer

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — A couple of bachelors will soon call Brookfield Zoo their home.
Shango and Barney are adult western lowland gorillas, or silverbacks, coming to Brookfield from Miami. The brothers will form the first-ever bachelor troop at the zoo.
Bachelor troops are made up of younger males who have left their family troop or adult males who haven't formed one.
'These social troops help foster critical skills and relationships, contributing to the well-being of the individuals and the species,' zoo officials said.
Shango, 36, and Barney, 31, were born at San Francisco Zoo and have lived together at Zoo Miami for the past several years.
The zoo says Shango is known for his stoic expressions and often appears to hold up his middle finger because of an injury he got while playing that left him unable to bend that finger.
Barney is known for his cooperative nature and voluntarily participates in his veterinary care, Brookfield Zoo said.
Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching and disease.
The gorillas will be joining Bornean orangutans and several species of monkeys in the new James & Elizabeth Bramsen Tropical Forests exhibit this summer.
According to the zoo, guests will be able to get up close to the primates through viewing areas, including two indoor and four outdoor habitats spanning nearly three acres.

Trumps to Attend ‘Les Misérables' at Kennedy Center

President Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump, are scheduled to attend the opening night performance of 'Les Misérables' at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday night. In some sense it is the culmination of the Trump takeover of the national cultural center. The president appointed himself chairman of the Kennedy Center in February, purged the traditionally bipartisan board and restocked it with loyalists. In March, he took a tour and met with his new board. 'We're going to get some very good shows,' he said at the time. 'I guess we have 'Les Miz' coming.' Mr. Trump's tightening grip has upset a number of artists, and some members of the cast were expected to boycott the performance. 'Les Misérables' has long been one of Mr. Trump's favorite shows, and the opening on Wednesday was expected to be a big night out on the town for the president's friends and top allies, complete with a red carpet. The flashy outing, to a musical with its climactic moments celebrating an anti-government uprising, coincides with one of the most volatile weeks of Mr. Trump's second term. Mr. Trump's administration has sent soldiers from the California National Guard and the Marines into Los Angeles in response to days of protests over immigration raids. Those deployments — over the objections of state and local officials there — has set off an extraordinary standoff between Mr. Trump and California's governor, Gavin Newsom. In a televised address on Tuesday night, Mr. Newsom accused Mr. Trump of mounting an attack on democracy: 'The moment we've feared has arrived.'

Ayo Edebiri Built ‘Barney' Pitch During Asia Trip

Ayo Edebiri is taking on a classic children's TV character after a much-needed break. The Golden Globe winner recently revealed that she developed her pitch for the upcoming Daniel Kaluuya-produced Barney film, from A24 and Mattel Films, during a trip suggested by a friend who noticed she was tired. More from Deadline Ayo Edebiri Tapped To Write Live-Action Barney Movie For Mattel, A24, Producer Daniel Kaluuya; Also In Talks To Star Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz On Barney Film: 'It Will Not Be An Odd Movie' Mikey Madison In Talks To Step In For Sydney Sweeney On A24's 'Masque Of The Red Death' 'She was like, 'When can you take a break?' And then I did. I went on a trip to Asia for a month,' she recalled to The Wall Street Journal. 'I felt like that girl who takes a gap year. That's where I ended up coming up with the idea for Barney that I ended up pitching to Daniel.' Edebiri added, 'I was just thinking of, what are the movies that I want to make? What are the things that I want to do? What are the things that make me excited? So I just had this idea, and then we started building it out together. And then it becomes what it's going to be, which I don't want to say too much about.' The Bear star was tapped to write the film in February, and she's also in talks to star in the adaptation of the PBS kids show Barney & Friends, which ran for 14 seasons from 1992 to 2010. The character of the big purple dinosaur was previously originated in the 1988 direct-to-video series Barney & the Backyard Gang. Mattel exec Kevin McKeon has said the live-action Barney film will be adult-oriented and 'surrealistic,' in the vein of films by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze. 'We're leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids,' he said. 'It's really a play for adults. Not that it's R-rated, but it'll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney—just the level of disenchantment within the generation.' Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz has added that the film is 'taking a fresh approach' to the character that will be 'fun, entertaining and culturally oriented,' emphasizing it 'will not be an odd movie.' Editor's note: A previous version of this story inaccurately stated Edebiri developed the pitch with a friend. We regret the error. See Elizabeth Hurley's Birthday Nude Celebrating Her 60th

Elizabeth Hurley is celebrating her birthday in the most iconic way possible: by posting a nude photo on Instagram. Which, for the record, was taken just this week. "Happy birthday to me!" she wrote alongside a pic of her naked and sitting in a bunch of grass. "This year has already been a wild ride; my 30th year of working with the Estée Lauder Companies, my 30th year as the Global Ambassador of the @esteelaudercompanies Breast Cancer Campaign, the 20th anniversary of @elizabethhurleybeach and… I'm in love ♥️♥️♥️ Feeling very blessed and grateful for having the best friends & family in the world ♥️ pic taken this afternoon… in my birthday suit xxx." He wasn't name-checked, but safe to assume the person Elizabeth is in love with is none other than Billy Ray Cyrus. These two went public with their romance back in April, when a source told Page Six, "She's been waiting a long time for romance. I think she likes the whole cowboy thing. Liz's friends think it must be a joke or madness, but they aren't saying it to her." The couple have been posting non-stop PDA pics, recently made their red carpet debut, and Elizabeth even opened up about how much she adores Billy at an event, saying, "I have to go back to England tomorrow, but Billy will come to England soon. We are very happy. We both love country music. We both love the country, and we both love our kids. We're happy together."
