Oman's capital Muscat is set for a transformative public transportation overhaul as the Muscat Municipal Council has outlined ambitious plans for urban mobility and recreational development.
Chaired by Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, the council's second meeting brought together representatives from Oman National Transport Company (Mwasalat) and Muscat Municipality to review key initiatives aimed at enhancing public transport and urban sustainability in the capital.
A major highlight of the meeting was Mwasalat's strategic public transportation plan (2015-2040), presented by its CEO Badr bin Mohammed Al Nadabi. The roadmap is divided into three phases: Phase 1 (Completed in 2018): Focused on activating bus services on major routes, integrating secondary lines, improving taxi services, and enhancing pedestrian infrastructure.
Phase 2 (Ongoing): Expanding bus services, adding branch lines, launching rapid bus routes, and developing new public transport stations.
Phase 3 (2026-2040): Introducing metro or light rail systems and integrating water taxis into the public transport network.
Eng. Al Nadabi also outlined Mwasalat's broader transportation strategy, covering public transport regulations, bus networks, urban mobility services, marine passenger transport, and rail systems. The company's current fleet includes six ferries, 320 minibuses, 116 city buses, and 49 large buses. Accommodate one million daily public transport passengers Achieve net-zero emissions
Dedicate 25 per cent of main roads to public transport routes
Increase pedestrian zones to 40 per cent of street space
Reduce traffic accident rates
Urban Development and Recreational Projects
The Muscat Municipality also presented two major recreational projects: Al Ansab Bicycle Track and Street Vendor Project: This development will feature a rugged cycling path, shaded seating, children's play areas, exercise stations, and designated vendor spaces, all designed for accessibility.
Daghmar Healthy Walkway and Cycling Track (Quriyat): A new fitness-focused walkway with rest areas, service facilities, and a games section. The first kilometre has been completed, with further phases planned.
These initiatives aim to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce pollution, and support environmental sustainability while stimulating local economic activity.
With these forward-thinking projects, Muscat is poised to redefine its urban landscape, creating a more sustainable, efficient, and accessible city for residents and visitors alike.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has unveiled a comprehensive transport plan for the Eid Al Adha 2025 holiday (June 5–8), ensuring residents and visitors enjoy safe, smooth, and stress-free travel during the festive break. With a surge in travel expected across Sharjah and beyond, SRTA will operate 180 buses across the emirate, delivering more than 5,600 trips across four days. To manage the holiday rush, bus frequency will increase to every five minutes during peak hours, down from the usual 45 minutes, dramatically reducing wait times for passengers. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. In Sharjah City, the Authority will run 1,144 daily trips across 12 routes with 104 buses covering 543 stops, making travel between neighbourhoods faster and more efficient. Additional staff will be deployed at key stations, particularly Jubail Bus Station, which will remain open from early morning until late evening. In a major highlight for intercity travellers, a special boat service between Sharjah and Dubai will operate four times daily during Eid. Departing from Sharjah's Aquarium Station and arriving at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, the marine route is a collaboration between SRTA and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, offering scenic and efficient transport between the emirates. SRTA is also working with Oman's national transport company, Mwasalat, to operate international route 203. This bus service connects the Emirate to Muscat, Oman's capital, with two daily trips from Jubail Station to Al Athaiba in Muscat, stopping at several destinations along the route. Tickets are available online via Mwasalat's official website or at local service read: UAE: 3 Rare Arabian Spotted Eagle Owl Babies Hatch in Sharjah

Muscat Municipality, Jindal Steel celebrate Oman's tallest flag

Oman has officially hoisted its tallest national flag, an enduring symbol of strength, unity, and pride. The momentous occasion, held under the patronage of Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, marks a new chapter in nation's legacy of pride and identity. Standing tall at Al Khuwair Square, the monumental flagpole is the result of a remarkable collaboration between Muscat Municipality and Jindal Steel. The project is a testament to what can be achieved when Corporates CSR aligns with national priorities, said a statement. Located at Al Khuwair Square, the 126-m-tall flagpole is supported by a robust foundation system. The flagpole itself was built using 141 metric tons of Jindal structural steel and 135 metric tons of Jindal rebar, totaling 276 metric tons of high-quality Jindal steel. The project spans a total plot area of 21,638 sq m and includes green landscaping featuring 57 diverse species of vegetation. Customised design elements such as wayfinding signage, a Mashrabiya pattern integrated around the flagpole, and decorative marble paving at the podium enhance the aesthetic appeal. The square also includes a range of public facilities such as open lawns, walkways, a central sunken plaza, kiosks, a 415-m cycle path, cafeteria with drive-thru, public amenities, parking for 73 cars, and thoughtfully designed site furniture. Fabricated using steel manufactured entirely by Jindal Steel, the flagpole is a testament to the capabilities of local industry and the spirit of cooperation between public institutions and private enterprise. The journey from concept to completion has been guided by a singular vision: to create a monument that belongs to the people of Oman and evokes a deep sense of belonging and pride. Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, said: 'This project represents a significant addition to the public amenities of Muscat Governorate, carrying symbolic and cultural value.' He further added: 'We hope this square becomes a vibrant space and an attractive destination that enriches the urban landscape of Muscat, enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors, and contributes to the governorate's ongoing efforts to humanize the city and strengthen social connections across its neighborhoods.' Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal steel Group, stated: 'This landmark is not just a physical structure, it is a powerful reflection of Oman's enduring values and forward-looking vision. Throughout the history of modern civilizations, it is evident that 'Steel Builds Nations'—not just through the usage of steel, but through the multiplier effects of the steel value chain, in creating a vibrant economy. Jindal Steel's steely commitment towards the community is evident in our various initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable impact and inclusive growth. Al Khuwair Square stands as a testament to the kind of socially sustainable projects we aspire to develop that showcase national identity, and uphold the rich culture, noble values, and ancient heritage of Oman -embodying the spirit of partnership between the public and private sectors.' -
