
Hyundai Motor rolls out HCloud platform for 10 million users
Hyundai Motor Group is implementing its private cloud platform, HCloud, within Equinix data centres worldwide to serve its more than 10 million connected car service subscribers.
The HCloud system is Hyundai Motor Group's proprietary cloud platform, developed to address increasing requirements for real-time data processing, seamless connectivity, and the need for scalable infrastructure due to accelerating advancements in connected and autonomous vehicle technologies.
By using Equinix International Business Exchange data centres across Asia, the United States, and Europe, as well as Equinix Fabric, Hyundai Motor Group is interconnecting its HCloud to multiple public cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS). This hybrid multicloud architecture aims to quicken the global rollout of connected car services, offering reliable connectivity, consistent service coverage, and lower latency for users.
The Group's connected car service (CCS) delivers in-car infotainment and mobile applications via wireless networks, serving the customer bases of its brands Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis. Since the launch of CCS in 2003, over 10 million subscribers have joined worldwide as of 2023, with a target to reach 20 million by 2026. Considerable investments are being made in the development and expansion of HCloud to support new offerings, including personalised driving experiences.
Industry forecasts indicate that 95% of new vehicles may be connected by 2030. In response, Hyundai Motor Group identified the need for distributed data processing infrastructure and proximity to cloud and network ecosystems to maintain a high-quality user experience. This led to the installation of HCloud in Equinix data centres in Seoul, Los Angeles, and Frankfurt, chosen for their international reach, high carrier density, and reliability supported by service-level agreements.
Equinix's geographical proximity to significant cloud and network providers facilitates Hyundai Motor Group's ability to connect with key partners while helping to ensure robust performance and scalability of its connected car services.
Implementing HCloud at Equinix has, according to the company, enhanced application responsiveness and improved the reliability of remote services. This collaboration is seen as supporting Hyundai Motor Group's transition towards software-defined vehicles and establishing the groundwork for more advanced connected mobility solutions.

The Clean Car Standard (CCS), launched with the intention of reducing transport emissions, is now under fire from the very industry it was meant to help reform. 'VIA initially supported the Clean Car Programme's intent to reduce emissions but warned in October 2021 that its design could lead to unintended consequences, including vehicle shortages, rising costs, market inefficiencies, fleet aging, and flawed incentives—predictions that, as much as everyone hoped otherwise, have proven to be true,' says Epps. 1. Reassess the volume trap Data reveals that unless policy is urgently reformed, used import volumes could decline to 60,000 by 2028—a level last seen before the liberalisation of vehicle tariffs in the late 1980s. A contracting pipeline means fewer efficient vehicles are available to replace the old, high-emitting ones still on New Zealand's roads. That dynamic, compounded by cost-of-living pressures, will incentivise owners to repair and retain older cars, which will effectively reverse the emissions gains CCS was designed to produce. Epps says the reality is sobering, 'The average vehicle age is climbing, and with it, emissions per kilometre. Treasury warned back in 2019 that fleet refreshment—not just cleaner cars—was critical to reducing net emissions. VIA's latest reports show this advice was not heeded.' 2. Focus on fuel, not just fleets 'The fastest way to cut emissions is to target the energy source, not just the car,' says Epps. The paper advocates for a broader approach through a transparent, user-pays fuel levy to reflect the true climate cost of driving. By making petrol more expensive at the pump, behaviour change is more likely across all vehicle types, rather than penalising just the act of importing a car. 'We believe this would shift the incentive from vehicle purchase decisions alone to everyday usage—a more equitable approach,' says Epps. 'Especially given that vehicle supply is driven by Japanese auction markets and foreign exchange rates far beyond the control of Kiwi buyers or importers.' 3. Keep it simple, and sustainable Epps says the VIA is calling for CCS overhaul, if not replacement. 'At the heart of the issue is a misaligned set of targets and incentives. For example, current weight allowances mean that heavier vehicles receive more lenient emissions benchmarks, creating a perverse incentive that favours larger cars—despite their greater fuel use.' Epps is calling for a flat penalty for each gram of CO over a set threshold, applied at first registration and clearly displayed at the point of sale. 'This system would be transparent, fair, and easier for consumers to understand. Crucially, it would also better align with used market realities, where options are constrained by Japan's registration patterns from a decade ago,' he says. Broad approach to transport needed Epps says a genuinely effective response to transport emissions in New Zealand requires a whole-of-system approach—one that goes far beyond simply regulating the cars we drive. 'Focusing solely on the Clean Car Standard (CCS) neglects the broader ecosystem of transport choices that shape daily mobility, particularly in urban areas. Investment in public transport infrastructure offers scalable emissions reductions by shifting commuters out of private vehicles altogether. 'Electrifying bus fleets, expanding train services, and supporting active transport options like cycling and walking through safe, connected cycleways can deliver rapid, population-wide benefits.' Epps says these initiatives reduce vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) and lower dependence on fossil fuels, regardless of the vehicle fleet's emissions profile. 'The Clean Car Standard can't carry the entire weight of our climate commitments,' says Epps, and the data supports this. By rebalancing policy focus to include modal shift—encouraging more people to choose buses, bikes, or trains instead of cars—New Zealand can achieve meaningful emissions reductions while also improving health, congestion, and social equity,' he says. This means investing not only in infrastructure but also in affordability and access: subsidised public transport, integrated ticketing systems, and support for electric bike ownership all play a role. 'A diversified strategy doesn't dilute emissions efforts—it strengthens them, ensuring more New Zealanders can participate in the transition, not just those in a position to buy a cleaner car,' says Epps. The path forward The original Clean Car Programme was built on good intentions, but execution has strayed into over-engineered policy that now actively hampers the transition it aimed to enable. 'Without affordable used hybrids and electrics flowing into the country at scale, emissions will continue to rise despite regulatory efforts.' Epps says that unfortunately, VIA's consistent warnings since 2021 have come to pass. 'We encourage the Government to decide whether to recalibrate to create a greener, more sustainable transport system. The alternative is rising costs, older cars, and missed climate targets,' he says. The right fixes for the climate
As one climate solution stumbles, others emerge. As New Zealand and the world edge closer to 2030 climate targets, a range of technologies are being explored to cut emissions and slow the pace of climate change. Among these, carbon capture and storage (CCS) has had considerable attention — but it comes with both promise and controversy. For some, it is seen as a climate saviour — promising to remove carbon emissions from our current activities. However, for many others, it is viewed as an unproven technological promise that offers to "fix" climate change without requiring any fundamental changes to business-as-usual. What is CCS? At its core, carbon capture and storage is a three-step process. First, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is captured from industrial or energy-producing processes — think power stations, cement plants or steel mills. Next, the gas is compressed and transported, usually by pipeline. Finally, it is injected deep underground into rock formations for long-term storage. CCS is particularly appealing for what are known as "hard-to-abate" sectors — those industries where electrification or renewable alternatives are difficult or expensive. In theory, CCS allows businesses to continue operations while substantially reducing their climate impact. Think mining, smelting, coal boilers etc. However, there's a catch. The technology is expensive, energy-intensive, and still largely unproven at scale. Critics argue that CCS may give fossil fuel companies a licence to carry on business as usual, rather than investing in cleaner alternatives. The International Energy Agency notes that while CCS has a role in achieving net zero, it is not a silver bullet and must be part of a wider suite of decarbonisation efforts. In Aotearoa New Zealand, carbon capture and storage (CCS) remains in the exploratory phase. While the country's geography offers some potential for geological storage — particularly in depleted oil and gas fields — deployment to date has been minimal. For example, it was reported this week that the proposed Todd Energy CCS project, originally planned to begin in 2027, now appears unlikely to proceed. This project was referenced in the Government's Second Emissions Reduction Plan (2026–2030), which sets a target of limiting emissions to 305 megatonnes. The plan also includes provisions to integrate CCS into the Emissions Trading Scheme and projects that, excluding biogenic methane, New Zealand could achieve net zero emissions by 2050. To put this into context, the Climate Change Commission (CCC) recently released advice on New Zealand's fourth carbon budget. It recommends a total emissions cap of 160 megatonnes CO₂ for the period 2036–2040 — a reduction of almost half on the current 2030 budget, which the country is already on track to exceed. Meeting these targets may increasingly depend on purchasing international offsets, raising both financial and ethical concerns. At the same time, fast-tracked infrastructure and industrial projects risk adding more emissions than we have managed to reduce so far. Thus, this picture is not looking good. The new technology we thought would be able to remove carbon from the atmosphere is not coming on board. We are fast tracking activities that will increase our carbon footprint and dismantling policies that were helping people and businesses to decarbonise. While at the same time we have plans to reach net zero by 2050 and the latest advice from the Climate Change Commission is to dramatically reduce our emissions in the next 15 years. It would appear that we may end up with a disorderly decarbonisation journey that could cause social upheaval and economic disruption (a scenario addressed in the United Nation's report Decarbonisation and Disruption ) However, other investment in emerging and new decarbonisation technologies is happening globally and we have some good examples of organisations working on decarbonisation transitions here too. One promising example of grassroots innovation driving climate solutions in Aotearoa is Rewiring Aotearoa. This independent, non-partisan charity is leading important work on energy, climate, and electrification. With a focus on research, advocacy, and community support, the organisation is helping New Zealanders navigate the complex energy transition. What sets Rewiring Aotearoa apart is its commitment to putting people at the centre of the energy system. Their team, comprised of experts in energy systems, policy, and community engagement, aims to support informed choices that lower energy costs while cutting carbon emissions. The shift to electrification, powered by clean technology, is one of the most critical steps in moving Aotearoa away from fossil fuels and accelerating our path to decarbonisation. Secondly, instead of just relying on technology we can also use nature-based solutions to decarbonise. Doing this alongside technology can accelerate decarbonisation strategies. The Toha Network exemplifies how digital innovation can drive nature-based climate solutions. By developing digital public infrastructure, Toha is enabling the measurement, verification, and monetisation of environmental actions such as wetland restoration, pest control, and native seed collection. Participants can report verifiable data on their activities, which is then used to generate Mahi tokens, which are digital assets that represent units of work in service to nature. These tokens can be bought by governments, businesses, and other stakeholders, which then channel funds to communities engaged in ecological restoration. This approach not only facilitates the scaling of regenerative projects but also ensures environmental data remains under the control of the communities it represents, aligning with principles of data sovereignty. By integrating technology with ecological stewardship, Toha is working towards creating a transparent and equitable system that supports both climate mitigation and community empowerment. Their model shows the potential of combining digital tools with nature-based solutions to achieve meaningful progress in decarbonisation efforts. As pressure mounts to meet our national carbon budgets, some industrial players will be looking to invest in decarbonisation tools. It is important that over-promised tools such as CCS are rigorously debated — whether they work and when, where, and how such a tools fits within a just, science-based transition to a low-emissions economy. Innovations suggested like electrifying (Rewriting Aotearoa) and nature-based solutions (Toha), are already under way and proving successful. Supporting and scaling such innovations could be a part of a decarbonisation strategy arguably more appropriate for the New Zealand context. We all need these innovations to thrive to enable Aotearoa to build a climate resilient society in a just and meaningful way.
