Sainsbury's issues update as it makes major change to self checkouts
The move hopes to act as a "deterrent to shoplifters"
Self-checkout systems have become increasingly prevalent in UK supermarkets

Sainsbury's has issued an update after making a major change to its self-checkout counters in a bid to crack down on theft, it has been reported. Shoppers who failed to scan their items properly at the self-checkout will be shown VAR-style replays before leaving the supermarket.
A camera that is placed above the counters records packing actions at the till and if any item is bagged without scanning, the video of it will be shown to the shoppers and told: 'Looks like that last item didn't scan. Please check you scanned it correctly before continuing.'

This new technology has already started being rolled out across the UK, and shoppers have mixed reactions.

One of them said they were sent the warning because the packet of basil they bought was 'too light'.
Another added: 'Thanks to Sainsbury's, I can now re-live and learn from my packing mistakes.
'I can almost hear (Sky pundit) Jamie Carragher lamenting my positioning.'

A retail source said told the publication: 'It's a deterrent to shoplifters. Most people have made a genuine mistake while scanning, which is detected by the scales.
'It's a more gentle reminder than red flashing lights and a member of staff coming over.'
Self-checkout systems have become increasingly prevalent in UK supermarkets, offering convenience and efficiency for customers. However, their rise has coincided with a notable increase in shoplifting incidents.

In 2024, the UK experienced a significant surge in shoplifting, with over 516,000 recorded incidents, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. Despite this uptick, only about 14% of these cases resulted in charges.
The British Retail Consortium estimates that retail theft costs businesses approximately £2 billion each year. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

Common methods include "skip scanning," where items are not scanned at all, or scanning cheaper items in place of more expensive ones, reports The Sun.
A study indicated that 6.7% of transactions at self-checkouts involved some form of theft, with one in five shoppers admitting to accidental theft and one in seven to intentional theft.
The increase in shoplifting has prompted discussions about the effectiveness of current legal frameworks, as well as new innovations in supermarket technology.

Lots of the more expensive items are now stored in locked plastic boxes, and some shelves have rigid covers to purposefully make it harder for shoppers to take things from the shelves.
Security guards are usually positioned on the doors of every convenience store and supermarket in the UK. For example in Sainsbury's there are security guards from the Mitie Group in almost every Sainsbury's store, with some guards working undercover.
Sensors also track when high-value items such as steaks are taken off the shelves, alerting staff with a loud beeping sound.

Clear warnings through signage about surveillance and prosecution help supermarkets deter casual theft, as well as CCTV cameras.

Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford in another twist as UFC boss Dana White says he IS promoting super-fight

DANA WHITE has insisted he WILL promote the Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford fight - marking yet another twist. Canelo is due to defend his undisputed super-middleweight titles against unbeaten American Crawford in September. 3 Dana White insists he will promote Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford Credit: @danawhite And Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh - the financial backer behind the bout - initially announced that UFC boss White would promote. The super-fight was set for the Las Vegas Raiders' NFL stadium with Netflix on board to broadcast that bout. That was until Alalshikh made a U-turn and claimed Saudi-based Sela would promote and it would instead be on pay-per-view. White was probed on Alalshikh's comments after UFC 316 - but hit back to maintain he will be involved in the fight. READ MORE IN boxing JAKE TO SAY IT Jake Paul blasts Canelo's win over Scull and but says shock bout WILL happen He said: "I'm promoting the fight. I'll let you guys know when it's time to let you guys know." TKO Holdings - who own the UFC and WWE - signed a multi-year partnership to establish a boxing promotion alongside Saudi Arabia's Turki Alalshikh. As well as a UFC-style boxing league, two super-fights were set to be promoted by TKO and White every year. And Canelo's blockbuster against Crawford was due to kickstart the partnership. 3 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Then all of a sudden, Alalshikh told Ring Magazine - which he owns - that the date of the bout was set to change. And he was also considering having the bout move to New York or Los Angeles - opposed to the £1.5BILLION, 65,000-seat Raiders Stadium. Three-weight world champion Vasily Lomachenko retires after more than 400 FIGHTS in lengthy video It caused huge confusion with the news the fight would also be under the Riyadh Season banner and on PPV - suggesting White and Netflix were out of the picture. But, White clarified: "Listen, when we're at work in UFC headquarters, I'm in my own little world, man. I don't pay attention to any of that s***. 'I know what's going on, I know what we're doing, I don't really pay attention to that stuff." White has partnered with Alalshikh before having held two events in Riyadh in the past. Canelo, 34, beat William Scull, 32, to regain the 168lb undisputed thrown in early May as part of his four-bout deal with Alalshikh. Meanwhile Crawford, 37, has not fought since moving up to 154lb to win the WBA title against Israil Madrimov, 30, in August 2024. 3 Crawford with Turki Alalshikh and Canelo

Sainsbury's announces huge change to shelves that customers may notice soon

Co-op are also due to implement the change by next year. Sainsbury's supermarkets have announced a major change that shoppers may soon notice on store shelves. The classic British supermarket has become the latest grocer to trial electronic shelf-edge labels (ESLs) in an aim to modernise its stores and improve operational efficiency. ESLs offer retailers the opportunity to update their prices in real time, which aims to reduce pricing errors and better manage promotional offers. For those who work in supermarkets, it will also save time, as paper labels will no longer need to be manually changed by staff. ‌ Speaking to the Grocer, a Sainsbury's spokesperson said that the store was trialling electronic shelf-edge labels in a small number of stores. However, they refused to share any further details on the pilot, which is being monitored for both customer experience and back-end efficiency gains. ‌ It has not yet been confirmed exactly which or how many stores will be taking place in the ESL trial, but Sainsbury's customers may soon notice the new digital labels while browsing the supermarket. The retailer began trialling the new electronic labels across three of its larger-format stores last year, including in its 'Future Store' in Witney, Oxfordshire, which was refitted in November 2023, the Express reports. The change comes as part of Sainsbury's 'Future Store' programme, which aims to modernise the supermarket's store operations and improve customer experience using digital tools. Sainsbury's is testing ESLs across a variety of its product categories, including beers, wines & spirits, health products and general merchandise, according to industry sources. ‌ The trials are said to be testing both the hardware used to display prices as well as evaluating the potential labour savings that could come from automated pricing updates. The retailer follows a number of other major UK supermarkets that have made the move towards using electronic labels in stores. Co-op recently also announced plans to add electronic labels to all of its 2,400 stores by next year. ‌ Co-op head of operations Steven Logue said: "With convenience at the heart of everything we do, Co-op is committed to continually exploring innovative technology that can improve how we operate. "The electronic labels have the potential to enhance product information and transparency, avoid paper waste, and make everyday tasks like picking online orders easier." Co-op recently fell victim to cyber attacks, along with M&S, which left store shelves empty. ‌ The chain was forced to shut down IT systems and slow deliveries after hackers attacked their servers. During the attack, the cyber criminals breached IT networks and stole customer and employee data. They claimed to have the private details of 20 million customers in Co-op's membership scheme. Although shelves were widely empty, the store has since recovered from the incident. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
