Russian strikes on Kyiv kill one, school burning: Officials - War in Ukraine

Al-Ahram Weekly3 days ago
Russian strikes on Ukraine's capital Kyiv on Monday killed at least one person and left a shop and school on fire, according to city officials.
"Unfortunately, we have information about one person who died as a result of the attack," the head of Kyiv's military adminsitration Tymur Tkachenko said on Telegram.
Four districts of the city were attacked, with reports of burning residential buildings, a kiosk and a kindergarten, Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko said in another Telegram post.
The entrance to the Lukyanivska metro station was also damaged, he added.
The strikes come days after Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had proposed a new round of peace talks to Moscow.
So far two rounds of talks in Istanbul have failed to result in any progress towards a ceasefire, instead yielding large-scale prisoner exchanges and deals to return the bodies of killed soldiers.
The Kremlin said this month it was ready to continue talks with Ukraine after US President Donald Trump gave Russia 50 days to strike a peace deal or face sanctions.
The European Union on Friday agreed an 18th package of sanctions on Moscow that targets Russian banks and lowers a price cap on oil exports, in a bid to curb its ability to fund the war.

Egyptian FM Abdelatty concludes West Africa tour in Senegal - Foreign Affairs

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty headed on Thursday to Senegal, the fifth and final stop on his West African tour. Minister Abdelatty is scheduled to hold official talks with senior Senegalese officials and meet with representatives from both the government and the private sector, according to a foreign ministry statement. Discussions will focus on deepening bilateral cooperation in the economy, investment, and infrastructure, as well as exploring opportunities for Senegal to benefit from Egyptian expertise in training and capacity building. The visit will also address joint coordination on pressing regional issues, particularly security in the Sahel region and counter-terrorism efforts, the statement noted. Additionally, the ministers will discuss mechanisms to bolster joint African action within the framework of the African Union and other relevant regional organizations. The visit follows Abdelatty's stop in Mali, the fourth leg of his tour, which has also included Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso. The trip comes after Egypt participated in the 47th Ordinary Session of the African Union's Executive Council earlier this month. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

73-year-old woman accused of plotting to kill Israeli PM with rocket launcher - Region

A terminally ill 73-year-old Israeli woman has been charged with plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a rocket launcher, prosecutors said on Thursday. According to the indictment, the woman, an anti-government activist from Tel Aviv whose identity has not been released, decided to kill Netanyahu after she learned of her diagnosis. She consequently decided to "sacrifice" her life in order to "save" the State of Israel from the current government, the prosecutor quoted her saying. She reportedly shared her plan with another activist and asked him to help her purchase a rocket-propelled grenade to carry out the assassination. She also asked him for his assistance in collecting information on the prime minister's agenda, movements, and security arrangements, the prosecutor said. The man refused to cooperate and tried to dissuade her but after realising that his attempts were in vain, he reported her to the authorities, leading to her arrest. The prosecutor requested to keep the woman under house arrest until the end of the legal proceedings, arguing that she still poses a danger, as evidenced by her statements that she was willing to die as a "martyr". An Israeli man was arrested last year after threatening to kill Netanyahu in a social media post. High-profile political assassinations are not unheard of in Israel. In 1995, prime minister Yitzhak Rabin was killed by a far-right militant for his endorsement of the Oslo peace process with Palestinians. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

ICC convicts pair over Central Africa war crimes - Africa

The International Criminal Court Thursday convicted a former top Central African Republic football official and a militiaman nicknamed Rambo for multiple war crimes committed during the country's civil war in 2013 and 2014. Ex-sports minister Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona was a senior leader of mainly Christian militias as the country slid into civil war, while Alfred Yekatom, a former MP, commanded them on the ground. The ICC sentenced Yekatom to 15 years behind bars for 20 war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder and torture. Ngaissona received a sentence of 12 years for 28 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Their militia, known as anti-Balaka or "anti-machete", were formed as vigilante self-defence groups after mainly Muslim rebels called the Seleka stormed the capital Bangui and removed then-president Francois Bozize, a Christian. Presiding judge Bertram Schmitt read harrowing details of the violence committed by the militia against suspected Seleka Muslims. Yekatom's men tortured one suspect by cutting off his fingers, toes, and one ear. This man's body was never found. Others were killed and then mutilated. Appearing in court dressed in a light brown suit and waistcoat, white shirt, and dark tie, Yekatom listened impassively as the judge read out the verdict. Dressed in a bright blue jacket, Ngaissona nodded to the judge as his sentence was delivered. The court found Yekatom not guilty of conscripting child soldiers and acquitted Ngaissona of the charge of rape. Both men had pleaded not guilty to all charges. Yekatom was extradited to The Hague in late 2018, after being arrested in the CAR for firing his gun in parliament. Ngaissona was arrested in France in December 2018 and extradited to The Hague. At the time he was head of the CAR football association and a board member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The Central African Republic is among the poorest nations in the world and has endured a succession of civil wars and authoritarian governments since independence in 1960. Violence has subsided in recent years but fighting occasionally erupts in remote regions between rebels and the national army, which is backed by Russian mercenaries and Rwandan troops. Set up in 2002, the ICC is the world's only independent tribunal capable of prosecuting those accused of the world's worst crimes. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
