Jonnu Smith's agent reveals Dolphins star's ‘first choice' in new twist to trade saga

New York Post02-06-2025

Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith isn't interested in moving.
As trade chatter swirls around Smith, who is seeking a new deal for the 2025 season, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, cleared the air on the Pro Bowler's standing during a weekly segment on the Miami-based WSVN-7
'Here's what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami,' Rosenhaus said, via the Miami Herald. 'That's his first choice. This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record-breaking season last year. It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end. … He broke the team record for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for a tight end and was the team's single Pro Bowl player. He's an incredibly valuable part of this team. … He went to college at FIU. His dream team is the Dolphins.

'Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami.'
Outside of the Dolphins, Smith has played in Tennessee, New England and Atlanta. The 29-year-old had the best season of his career thus far in Miami, where he signed a two-year, $8.4 million deal last offseason.

Smith tallied career-best totals of 88 receptions on 111 targets for 884 yards and tied his personal high of eight touchdowns. He also led the Dolphins in catches and touchdown grabs, and ranked second in receiving yards.
Those numbers led to his first career Pro Bowl nod.

He is slated to earn a base salary of $3.49 million in 2025 and counts $4.64 million against the salary cap.

Last week on the 'Pat McAfee Show,' NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Smith is chasing 'a lot' of money coming off a big season.
However, the Dolphins may not have the funds to follow through with Smith.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday the Dolphins engaged in trade discussions with the Steelers after Smith conveyed he wanted to re-work his contract.
Smith isn't the only Dolphins standout on the trading block as Jalen Ramsey could also be on his way out of South Beach.

Real Madrid dealt Club World Cup blow despite Kylian Mbappe leaving hospital

After spending Wednesday night in hospital, Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has been discharged in Miami, but the French forward is far from back to full fitness yet. The 26-year-old missed out on Xabi Alonso's debut as Real Madrid manager against Al-Hilal, but seems unlikely to be back for their next game either. After missing training on Tuesday, Mbappe also could not make it back on Wednesday evening for their 1-1 draw with the Saudi Arabian giants. The following day, Real Madrid confirmed that Mbappe was in hospital undergoing tests for a case of 'accute gastroentiritis'. Now he is out of hospital, as confirmed by the club. Mbappe all but out of Pachuca clash However the latest update on his fitness is not altogether promising for Real Madrid. El Chiringuito report that Mbappe is ruled out of their game with Pachuca on Sunday at 21:00 CEST, in their second group game. They say that it could be another 10 days before Mbappe returns to full fitness. This does not mean to say that he could not return to action before that, but it does alter Alonso's plans. Their final group game comes against RB Salzburg on Friday the 27th of June at 03:00am, but depending on where they finish in their group, Mbappe would only just be returning to fitness for their Round of 16 clash, which will take place on Tuesday the first of July, at the very end of those 10 days. Image via Visionhaus Alternatives for Xabi Alonso There is not a great deal of alternatives at Alonso's disposal either. Endrick Felipe has been left in Madrid as he recovers from a muscle tear, and in the opening game, he used Gonzalo Garcia Torres up front. That move came off, with Garcia grabbing the opening goal, but Rodrygo Goes or Jude Bellingham as false nines are the only other realistic alternatives.

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Named 'Most Underrated Quarterback'

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Named 'Most Underrated Quarterback' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has enjoyed a career resurgence that has perhaps saved his NFL life. Advertisement After a rough and inconsistent start to his NFL career, on the scrapheap at the end of 2022, Baker found the Buccaneers for the 2023 as they say, the rest is history. Two Pro Bowl nods, two division titles, a playoff win, and a career-best season in 2024 (4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns) have seen Baker save his NFL career. And now, he's finally getting the plaudits he deserves. In Pete Prisco's top 100 NFL players ahead of the 2025 season, after being unranked last year, Mayfield now jumps to No. 57. "Mayfield had his best season in 2024 with 41 touchdown passes and 4,500 yards," Prisco writes. "He might be the most underrated quarterback in the league after the slow start to his career." Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) tries to avoid a tackle by Denver Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto (15) in the fourth quarter at Raymond James Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Is Baker underrated? There is some merit to that. But there is also merit to the fact that some are waiting for what they think will be the inevitable drop-off. Advertisement There haven't been any signs that a regression is coming from Mayfield, and as we look ahead to the 2025 season, he is surrounded by perhaps the most talented group he's ever been around. A top run game, a receiver room that is dripping with talent, and the entire offensive line from last year is returning. Those are all key ingredients to having a successful season. Of course, expectations are now higher, and a deep playoff run is needed, given the number of weapons at Baker's disposal. And if he can lead this Buccaneers team to another playoff run, and play good football in the process, he might be higher on Prisco's list come next season. USNMNT blank Saudi Arabia to reach CONCACAF GOLD Cup quarterfinals

AUSTIN, Texas — Defender Chris Richards scored with a flick of the ball off a second-half free kick to lift the United States to a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Thursday night, sending the Americans on to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. Richards tracked the ball as it flew into the box on a curving free kick from Sebastian Berhalter in the 62nd minute to tap the ball with his left foot past Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aquidi. The win and the 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti in Group D's other match Thursday in Houston, clinched a knockout berth for the Americans, who improved to 42 wins, one loss and five draws in group play. The U.S. has won its group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, and closes Group D play on Sunday against Haiti at Arlington, Texas. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino stuck with the same lineup that produced a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, the first time he made no changes in consecutive matches since taking over the program last October. But playing against No. 58 Saudi Arabia, the 16th-ranked Americans showed little of the attack firepower they displayed against the No. 100 Soca Warriors. The match saw few real chances on goal by either team. The Americans had just one shot in the first half. Richards' speed to track back to cover for Alex Freeman's mistake and block a shot kept Saudi Arabia from a 1-0 lead. Matt Freese got his second consecutive start in goal for the U.S. and third in four matches as he appears to have displaced Matt Turner. Getty Images The Gold Cup represents the last competitive test for the Americans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. As co-host with Mexico and Canada, the U.S. is an automatic qualifier for the World Cup. The Americans limped into the Gold Cup on a four-match losing streak that included a 4-0 rout by Switzerland in their final tune-up. And with many of the top players either sitting out this tournament for personal reasons, injuries or playing in the Club World Cup, Pochettino selected a roster full of relatively untested and unproven players.
