The Internet's Funniest Jokes About the Chicago Pope

The Internet's Funniest Jokes About the Chicago Pope

Gizmodo09-05-2025
The new Pope was announced at the Vatican on Thursday as Robert Prevost, a Chicago-born missionary who will be the first American pope in the Catholic Church's history. The 69-year-old Prevost will take the name Leo XIV, and the internet at large responded with basically two types of reactions: 1) the far-right conservatives who whined that Leo was a 'woke Marxist,' and 2) all the other normal people who were just making jokes about the Pope being from Chicago.
Pope Leo has been on Twitter since 2011 and has a history of tweets that are now being dissected by online sleuths and political operatives to determine if he's a Good Pope or a Bad Pope. And while trying to map a Catholic leader's politics to fit an American understanding of the political landscape is silly on many levels, that hasn't stopped people from trying, especially since Leo has tweeted criticism of Vice President JD Vance's views on Catholicism and retweeted criticism of President Donald Trump's views on immigrants.
Those tweets have caused people like conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer to melt down, writing 'WOKE MARXIST POPE' in response to one of Leo's old tweets from 2015 about Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric. Mike Cernovich, a far-right Pizzagate conspiracy theorist who was invited to the White House after Trump took office, called the new pope, 'a shitlib who was given a title by the Lavender Mafia to sow division in my country.'
But that's enough about whiners on Twitter. What about the jokes? The good, old-fashioned American tradition of making jokes about the Second City—whether it's deep dish pizza, hot dogs, or the Bears? Well, there's been plenty of that too. And below we've got some of our favorites.
'Chicago Pope' is like a 1994 SNL sketch. Airs at 12:20am, the only gag is that Chris Farley has a mustache and is doing a big accent. David Spade and the guest host (Joe Mantegna) keep breaking during it.

'Sopranos' Star, 73, Makes Heartbreaking Admission About His Mental Health

'Sopranos' Star, 73, Makes Heartbreaking Admission About His Mental Health originally appeared on Parade. Joe Pantoliano, best known for his Emmy-winning role as Ralph Cifaretto on The Sopranos, has candidly shared his decade-long struggle with clinical depression — a battle that nearly wrecked his marriage and life. At 73, Pantoliano revealed he suffered from depression for over 10 years before receiving a formal diagnosis in 2007. During his darkest moments, he admitted to self-medicating through what he calls his 'seven deadly symptoms' 'Alcohol, what was available, women, you know, risky behavior, act first and then ask questions second,' he explained to Page Sixat the off-Broadway opening of Ginger Twinsies on Thursday, July 24. The Goonies star confessed that he saw himself as 'a mess for a long time.' He traces much of his mental health challenges back to a turbulent childhood with his mother, who also struggled with mental illness. 'My wife Nancy Sheppard and my kids were ready to throw me out,' Pantoliano recalled. 'The only people who were happy to see me weren't people. They were my dogs.' He credited his pets with saving his life, saying they were 'the only spark that was left in me.' He then likened himself to Tinkerbell, whose "light" was fading. Since his diagnosis, Pantoliano has taken steps to raise awareness around mental health. He wrote two books addressing his depression and, in 2009, founded the organization 'No Kidding, Me Too!,' dedicated to removing the stigma associated with mental illness. 'We've done such a great job,' he explained. "Our mission for 'No Kidding, Me Too!' was to make the discussion of mental disease cool and trendy." 'And we've succeeded,' he quipped. 'You can't get them to shut up now!' Fans know Pantoliano best as Ralph Cifaretto, the sarcastic and volatile mobster on The Sopranos, where he starred alongside James Gandolfini, Michael Imperioli and Lorraine Bracco. His unforgettable performance earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Trump pauses export controls to bolster China trade deal, FT says

(Reuters) -The U.S. has paused curbs on tech exports to China to avoid disrupting trade talks with Beijing and support President Donald Trump's efforts to secure a meeting with President Xi Jinping this year, the Financial Times said on Monday. The industry and security bureau of the Commerce Department, which oversees export controls, has been told in recent months to avoid tough moves on China, the newspaper said, citing current and former officials. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The White House and the department did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment outside business hours. Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials are set to resume talks in Stockholm on Monday to tackle longstanding economic disputes at the centre of a trade war between the world's top two economies. Tech giant Nvidia said this month it would resume sales of its H20 graphics processing units (GPU) to China, reversing an export curb the Trump administration imposed in April to keep advanced AI chips out of Chinese hands over national security concerns. The planned resumption was part of U.S. negotiations on rare earths and magnets, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said. The paper said 20 security experts and former officials, including former deputy US national security adviser Matt Pottinger, will write on Monday to Lutnick to voice concern, however. "This move represents a strategic misstep that endangers the United States' economic and military edge in artificial intelligence," they write in the letter, it added.
