
Mattel partners with OpenAI to bring AI to Barbie, Hot Wheels and more
AI powerhouse OpenAI has announced a strategic partnership with Barbie-maker Mattel Inc. Under this partnership, the Sam Altman-led company will create AI-powered toys and experiences. This will essentially bring OpenAI's tech to Mattel brands such as Hot Wheels, American Girl, Barbie, and more.
'We're pleased to work with Mattel as it moves to introduce thoughtful AI-powered experiences and products into its iconic brands, while also providing its employees the benefits of ChatGPT. With OpenAI, Mattel has access to an advanced set of AI capabilities alongside new tools to enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation at scale,' said Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer at OpenAI.
Under the agreement Mattel will use OpenAI's expertise to design, develop, and launch 'groundbreaking experiences for fans worldwide.' Mattel has said that with the help of OpenAI's technology, it will bring the magic of AI to age-appropriate play experiences with an emphasis on innovation, privacy, and safety.
'Each of our products and experiences is designed to inspire fans, entertain audiences, and enrich lives through play. AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways. Our work with OpenAI will enable us to leverage new technologies to solidify our leadership in innovation and reimagine new forms of play,' said Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer at Mattel.
'Mattel will incorporate OpenAI's advanced AI tools like ChatGPT Enterprise into its business operations to enhance product development and creative ideation, drive innovation, and deepen engagement with its audience. With OpenAI, Mattel will have advanced AI capabilities that can power the development and operations of consumer products and experiences,' the company said in an official statement.
Under this collaboration, consumers can expect the first AI-powered product later this year. The partnership will cover physical toys and digital experiences across Mattel's portfolio which features hundreds of iconic brands and game titles. Besides, Mattel employees will also gain access to ChatGPT Enterprise to augment creative ideation and streamline business operations across the company. It needs to be noted that both companies emphasised safety and age-appropriate design, with Mattel having full control over its IP and final products.
This is a significant development as it means now toys are about to get more personalised and intelligent with AI. However, children interacting with AI is likely to cause a stir and it may even raise concerns about development, privacy and the larger question – if at all AI belongs in the playroom. However, for much of the debate to unfold, it is ideal to wait for the AI-powered toys to hit the market.

Meta poaches 28-year-old Scale AI CEO after taking multibillion dollar stake in startup
Facebook-owner Meta has invested in Scale AI in a deal that values the data-labeling startup at $29 billion and brings in its 28-year-old CEO, Alexandr Wang, to play a prominent role in the tech giant's artificial intelligence strategy. Meta will take a 49% stake for $14.3 billion, according to two sources familiar with the matter. 'We will deepen the work we do together producing data for AI models and Alexandr Wang will join Meta to work on our superintelligence efforts,' Meta said in a statement that did not disclose financial terms. The main driver for Meta's substantial investment in Scale was to secure Wang to lead its new superintelligence unit, according to a separate source briefed on the discussions. The sources were not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified. Meta didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Wang, who was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to Chinese immigrant physicists, dropped out of MIT to co-found Scale. He was quickly lauded as one of Silicon Valley's most promising entrepreneurs, raising funding from blue-chip venture capital firms and achieving billionaire status in his 20s. He has also cultivated relationships with top tech executives such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and has since leveraged his influence to build connections in Washington D.C., testifying in front of Congress and securing the federal government as a big client. Meta, once recognized as a leader in open-source AI models, has suffered from staff departures and has postponed the launches of new open-source AI models that could rival competitors like Google, OpenAI, and China's DeepSeek. By poaching Wang, who does not come from a research background but has built a major AI business, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is betting that Meta's AI efforts can be turned around by an adept business leader more in the mold of Altman than the research scientists at the helm of most competing labs. Scale said the deal values it at $29 billion and that its chief strategy officer, Jason Droege, will serve as its interim CEO. The social media giant doesn't plan to take a board seat in Scale, one of the sources added. A few employees from Scale, a company with 1,500 people, will join Wang in moving to Meta, Wang said in a note to employees on Thursday. Wang will remain on Scale's board. The cash investment would rank as Meta's second-largest ever after its $19 billion buyout of WhatsApp. It's unclear if this deal will come under any regulatory scrutiny. Meta has been sued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which alleges it illegally acquired Instagram and WhatsApp to stifle competition. Founded in 2016, Scale provides vast amounts of accurately labeled data, which is pivotal for training sophisticated tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT. To do so, Scale set up subsidiary platforms such as Remotasks and Outlier to recruit and manage gig workers who manually label the data. It was valued at nearly $14 billion in a May 2024 funding round that included Nvidia, Amazon and Meta among its backers. Despite the large investment sum, the deal might not be all good for Scale. Many AI labs that are clients of Scale could decide to discontinue using its services if they were to worry, that since Wang still sits on Scale's board, Meta might obtain an inside track into rivals' priorities around data. Still, the deal is a win for early venture capital investors in Scale, such as Accel and Index Ventures, who can cash out half of their stake in the startup.

The em dash does not belong to ChatGPT
A writer-journalist friend was recently told that something he wrote felt like it was ChatGPT-coded. This was because of his liberal use of the em dash—that long punctuation mark which signals a mid-sentence shift to add emphasis, or to frame a detail too important to sideline. Over the last few months, there has been a lot of clamour around em dashes showing up frequently in AI-generated writing. The assumption, now gathering steam in certain corners of the internet, is that if you use too many em dashes in your social media posts, you must be using AI to aid your writing. Furious at the allegation, my friend took to LinkedIn to post a spirited rant—part grammar lesson, part love letter—breaking down the em dash, the en dash, and the humble hyphen. It got me thinking. As a reader, when I see a detail framed by em dashes, I take it more seriously than if it were cushioned inside parentheses. In my head, parentheses whisper and giggle, but em dashes declare. Even if a thought comes engulfed in parentheses inside my head, when I put it on paper, I often use em dashes instead, because I want the reader to think they still carry the same weight as the stuff that came before and after. Incidentally, Jane Austen, the subject of our cover this week, was famously em-dash-happy. In 2019, writer Kressie Kornis published findings from a two-year study of dashes in Austen's manuscripts and published work, which excluded hyphens and dashes used in place of proper nouns. Some of her drafts, Kornis noted, used up to 67% more dashes than her published works. This also suggests that Austen's editors may have deliberately dumbed down her writing style. Even more fascinating: Austen's dash usage increased with age. On Instagram, I stumbled upon handles like @emdashphilips of American poet Emilia Philips, and a private account @emdashes belonging to an Emily Gordon who mentions punctuation in her bio. It was delightful to see people are building their online identities around this punctuation mark. And why shouldn't they? The em dash is serious business. Translator and academician Arunava Sinha says, 'As a reader, an em dash tells me to stop, think, and then move on. I like reading in a rush, so I appreciate it when a writer asks me to pause.' Even though he's partial to commas when he writes, he admits they make every portion of a sentence look identical. The em dash, however, 'allows for emphasis'. Author Nona Uppal from Delhi has long memorised 'Option+Shift+ Hyphen' command on her Macbook to summon the em dash. 'I've been doing it for years,' she says. 'I think I should just create a shortcut key instead,' she says, almost as if sandwiching the thought between em dashes as she speaks. 'But I like that there's some friction in the process of placing an em dash,' she reckons almost immediately after. 'I don't want to overuse it. The em dash should capture an inner layer of thought that I want the reader to pay attention to,' Uppal says. While there are many writers speaking up in defence of the em dash ever since the AI link-up, I do wonder if this will make the silent majority of those not too confident about their place as writers pipe down on their genuine em-dashing. 'Interestingly, if they do, the frequency of em dashes in AI-writing will reduce too,' says Avinash Pandey, a faculty member in the linguistics department at the University of Mumbai. 'After all, AI simply regurgitates what has been fed to it.'

We can't even agree on how to measure the intelligence of humans -- much less compare humans and machines. Then why do people say AGI is close? As companies like OpenAI fed more and more data into their systems, they improved at a steady rate. Some technologists believe the progress will continue at much the same rate -- to AGI and beyond. But is that true? Maybe. In recent months, companies used up just about all the English language text on the internet as they improved these systems. So they turned to a new method where their systems learn by trial and error -- a process called reinforcement learning. Technologists are divided on whether this technique will lead to AGI. A recent paper from Apple -- which followed a similar paper from researchers at Arizona State University -- shows that the latest AI systems could become less accurate as they work through the multiple steps of problem solving. It was an indication that the metronomic improvement that the tech industry has grown accustomed to may be slowing. "These are great tools," said Subbarao Kambhampati , a professor and AI researcher at Arizona State University, who was an author of the report.
