Auckland United FC Set Up Title Decider With Hekari Womens FC At The OPC Women's Champions League In Tahiti
Ben Bate's side won the final 1-0 in the Solomon Islands last year and also defeated Hekari 2-1 in Group play last week.
They made a statement against Henderson Eels, scoring three times in the first seven minutes to effectively seal progression to the final.
Zoe Benson scored a hat-trick inside 28 minutes to overtake Hekari United's Marie Kaipu in the race for the Golden Boot. She now has eight for the tournament, one clear of the Papua New Guinea side's captain and star striker.
Henderson Eels playmaker Ileen Pegi showed her class in a brief moment of respite for the Eels with a strong run down the flank, before cutting back inside of Saskia Vosper and unleashing a stunning right footed strike to beat a despairing Hannah Mitchell in the Auckland United FC goal.
That goal in the 26th minute was as good as it got for the Solomon Islanders on attack. They did manage a freekick against the crossbar late in the second half. At the other end while Betty Sade had a tough time in the Henderson Eels goal, she produced a moment of magic to deny Ava Pritchard from the penalty spot in the 36th minute.
Leading by 5-1 at the break, Auckland United FC ensured there would be no dramatic comeback from their opponents two minutes after the restart when substitute Danielle Canham scored Auckland's sixth goal of the game.
From there Ben Bate's side controlled the tempo but were unable to find the back of the net again as Henderson Eels produced a resolute defensive display that was missing in the opening 30 minutes of the match.

Samoa keeps clean sheet in Pool A with win over Tahiti at OFC U16 women's tourney

Photo: Shane Wenzlick / Hosts Samoa are on fire after they defeated Tahiti 1-0 in Apia on Thursday afternoon to record their third win from Pool A at the Group A at the OFC 2025 Under-16 Women's Championship. Having already secured a semi-final spot following their victory over Fiji on Monday, the hosts did not let down, even with eight of their starters rested from the match. The game was postponed for some time because of the heavy rain and ground conditions. OFC said seven minutes into the second spell with pools of water appearing all over the pitch, referee Michael Urui of the Solomon Islands made the decision to postpone the match for 30 minutes. Remarkably the rain stopped and the drainage at the ground worked a treat, with play resuming approximately 40 minutes after the players left the field. Tova Uvaa scored the winner that sealed the win. She said after the match it was a special goal, especially as the players had worked hard despite the playing conditions. "It was so special," she said. "It was so hard coming into the second half with so much rain and all the puddles. "It was hard getting in together. Tahiti was a great team." Uvaa said the team now looks forward to Monday's semi-final. Head coach Juan Chang Urrea rested some of his key players, ahead of the semi-finla but the young Samoans did not disappoint, as they continued their impressive showing so far. OFC said the first half was largely devoid of genuine clear cut scoring opportunities and as the weather deteriorated; it made it tougher for players under foot. Substitute Madison Cahill had a golden opportunity to open the scoring for Samoa in the 63rd minute after a beautiful cross from the right by Taliyah Taaga. But Cahill couldn't get a solid connection on the ball and her shot went wide. Cali Willis tookk the field as Samoa tried to break the deadlock. Samida Tumanuvao almost got on the scoreboard but her shot was saved by Tahiti keeper Kalea Torohia. However, continuing pressure Samoa finally found the goal in the 81st minute when Willis turned provider in when she swung in a cross from the left for Auvaa to fire in a superb right footed effort into the corner of the net. A 6-0 scoreline in the end showed how determined New Caledonia was to secure a semi-final spot. They finished as runner-up from the pool behind Samoa. OFC said Kenji Vendegou's side dominated the match with their relentless attacking play, spearheaded by the dangerous trio of Kinë Hmaen, Shana Nemoinon and Heidra Adjouhgniope. The three players constantly probed Fiji's defense with quick combinations and sharp runs down the flanks. The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Hmaen latched onto a pass and fired home, before she added a second in first half stoppage time with another composed finish. Heidra Adjouhgniope delivered the decisive blow on the stroke of half-time with a clinical strike. Leading 3-0 at the breather, New Caledonia were already qualified. They returned determined to score more, as Fiji slowly fell apart in midfield. The result was put beyond doubt when New Caledonia captain Matha Bako scored from close range. New Sports and Youth Minister for French Polynesia

Photo: Présidence de la Polynésie Française French Polynesia's President Moetai Brotherson cabinet has appointed a new Sports and Youth Minister. Kainuu Temauri, 29, has been appointed to the role less than two years ahead of the 2027 Pacific Games to be hosted by French Polynesia. As part of the latest Cabinet reshuffle announced last week, Temauri will also be in charge of youth crime prevention, as well as arts and crafts. A law graduate, Temauri is described as being experienced in "local administration" and was already an advisor within the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the past two years. His predominant task will be to supervise and coordinate the organisation and preparation for the 2027 Pacific Games. This includes upgrading and building relevant infrastructure to host the key regional event. Temauri replaces Nahema Temarii, who had held the portfolio for the past two years and officially stated she was leaving for "personal reasons". Speaking to local media, Brotherson said last week the Pacific Games were now the priority and that it was Nahema Temarii's decision to leave because she recently mentioned "the weight of (her portfolio) being too heavy for a young mother". "I respect her decision", Brotherson told local media last week. According to the latest available figures, the cost to organise and host the Pacific Games in Tahiti (from 24 July to 8 August 2027) has been estimated at about €100 million, including about €21m taken care of by France. Competitions would mainly take place on the capital island of Tahiti, but also on its "sister" island of Moorea and in Raiatea. Existing infrastructure such as the iconic Pater Stadium in Papeete would be used, but needed to be renovated. The first phases of upgrading and building works started in July 2025 and were expected to be completed and delivered in April 2027.
