Panthers' Xavier Legette, Browns' Rayshawn Jenkins ejected for fight

Reuters2 days ago
August 9 - Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette didn't figure to be in for a long night in his team's first preseason game on Friday night.
Turns out it was much shorter than anticipated.
The Panthers' second-year player was ejected midway through the first quarter of his team's opener with the Cleveland Browns in Charlotte, N.C., after trading punches with Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins following a play. Jenkins was also ejected following their altercation.
Video showed Legette, 24, throw multiple punches at the head of Jenkins -- both players were wearing helmets at the time. Jenkins appeared to throw one punch in retaliation before Legette fell to his knees and wrapped Jenkins' legs.
Jenkins tore Legette's helmet off as Legette went to the ground; Jenkins never went down.
The altercation happened with seven minutes to go in the first quarter following a run for no gain by Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard.
Later, Legette posted a message on X to Panthers fans:
"Panthers nation I apologize It (won't) happen again!!!! I appreciate you all."
Selected out of South Carolina with final pick in the first round in 2024, Legette played in 16 games with 13 starts as a rookie, grabbing 49 balls for 497 yards and four touchdowns.
Jenkins, 31, signed with the Browns as a free agent in May. He played last season for the Seattle Seahawks after spending the previous three with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, who selected Jenkins in the fourth round in 2017.
In 122 career games (89 starts), Jenkins has 10 interceptions and 517 tackles. He did not record an interception with the Seahawks last season but did return a fumble 102 yards for a touchdown and tallied two sacks -- the first multi-sack season of his career.

Marcus Rashford produces early contender for miss of the season in Barcelona's 5-0 demolition of Cesc Fabregas' Como

Marcus Rashford produced a glaring misses as Barcelona swept aside Cesc Fabregas ' Como in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Sunday. The England forward joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United last month, with the Catalan giants having the option to turn the move permanent for around £30m. He made his home debut on Sunday night as the LaLiga side cruised to a 5-0 victory in their final pre-season match. But with Barcelona already 4-0 up, Rashford squandered a golden chance to mark the occasion with a goal. The 27-year-old rounded the goalkeeper but somehow fired wide of an open goal. He and team-mate Raphinha were both left with their heads in their hands in disbelief. Fortunately for Rashford, Barcelona were already out of sight thanks to goals from Fermin Lopez, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, with the teenage sensation adding a second after the break to complete the 5-0 demolition. The United loanee did at least play his part in the rout, using his blistering pace to beat a defender before delivering a perfect assist for Raphinha's strike. Rashford will be hopeful of making his competitive debut for barcelona when they open their LaLiga campaign with a trip to Mallorca on Saturday. The reigning champions have faced difficulties in registering players with the league due to their ongoing financial situation. Barcelona struggled to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor last season, with the pair initially given temporary licences which were revoked by LaLiga during the January transfer window. The club were temporarily granted permission to have the licences reinstated following an appeal, but the saga dragged on throughout the 2025-26 season. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has expressed confidence that Rashford will be among six stars registered prior to the season. 'It's progressing well,' Laporta told ESPN. 'We're doing our job and we're confident that we'll be able to register everyone.' When asked about the situation, Rashford added 'It's something for the club to sort out. I believe they are going to get it sorted. 'I just focus on training and be ready for the start of the season.'

Fans rip into 'sad' Conor McGregor training footage ahead of potential UFC return at the White House

Fans and former UFC legends are ripping into training footage of ex-two-belt champion Conor McGregor ahead of a potential bout on the lawn of the White House in 2026. McGregor, 37, hasn't entered an Octagon in four years after breaking his leg during his third bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July of 2021. Half a year before that horrific injury, he'd suffer the first knockout of his career against the same opponent. But now, McGregor appears to be training for another bout. While no date or card has been set, the Dublin native indicated his interest in returning for the UFC event at the White House that President Donald Trump floated for next year. McGregor, who has cozied up to Trump and has political views aligning with the president, has returned to posting training videos on his social media. But that footage has quickly been blasted by UFC fans on social media for the Irishman's lack of speed. Among the most notable critics is former UFC Women's World Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg, who left laughing emojis under a tweet showcasing the video. Other fans quickly chipped in with their critiques and opinions. 'Bro looks so bad now, just stay retired,' read one caption on X, formerly Twitter. Another wrote, 'He will never come back!' 'He's gonna get KO'd first round,' said a different user. 'So bad and slow and just weird. Stay retired 'cause you're gonna get knocked out in round 1. Face it man, it's over,' read another comment. Other fans suggested that a potential matchup against Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, 'Cowboy' Cerrone, or Ilia Topuria could yield positive results. In addition to his potential comeback in the UFC, McGregor announced his intention to stand as a candidate for the 2025 Irish presidential election back in March.

Guardians LHP John Means goes 2 innings in rehab start

August 10 - Cleveland Guardians left-hander John Means made a positive step toward his MLB return from Tommy John surgery, pitching two innings in a bridge game at the team's complex in Goodyear, Ariz., on Saturday. It was the first game action for the 32-year-old, who signed with Cleveland this spring after undergoing surgery in June 2024. "(He) pitched really well but (he also) felt great," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said, per "so that's a really good sign." Means was expected to be evaluated by Cleveland's training and medical staff on Sunday, Vogt said, before the hurler can begin searching for a rehab assignment at the minor league level. "We have to finish the rehab," Vogt said. "There's no rushing it. We don't have a date in mind or anything like that. So, it's step by step. But in a perfect world, he's back healthy and he could be an option for us down the stretch." A 2019 All-Star, Means is 23-26 in 78 games, which includes 73 starts, to go along with a 3.68 ERA and 334 strikeouts. He spent the first seven years of his career with Baltimore, although he was limited to just 10 starts over the past three seasons due to injuries. --Field Level Media
