Zepto's food facility in Dharavi shut down by FDA over poor hygiene, safety violations
Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cancelled the food business licence of Zepto's facility in Dharavi after a surprise inspection found multiple serious violations of food safety rules.
This move is part of a larger crackdown on Zepto's operations in Mumbai. According to FDA officials, the inspection at the Dharavi location revealed poor hygiene and unsafe food storage conditions.
Some food items were found with fungal growth, while others were stored near stagnant water. The cold storage units were not keeping the required temperature, and the floors were dirty and wet.
Inspectors also found expired food items not clearly separated from the fresh stock. The inspection was triggered by a tip-off received from the Minister of State for FDA, Yogesh Kadam.
Based on the findings, the Assistant Commissioner, Food, Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil, ordered the suspension of the facility's licence under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
This suspension will remain in place until Zepto corrects all the issues and gets clearance from the licensing authority.
Zepto, a fast-growing quick commerce company, has also faced inspections at its Bhiwandi, Bandra East, and Borivali facilities.
While the licences at Bhiwandi and Bandra East were not cancelled, notices were issued for violations.
In Borivali, the licence was temporarily suspended, but operations resumed after corrective measures were taken and approved by the appellate authority.
A Zepto spokesperson said: "Maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene is non-negotiable. We have already started an internal review and are working with authorities to fix the issues quickly."
This is not the first controversy for Zepto. The company has recently faced criticism from customers for allegedly increasing delivery charges and using deceptive practices on its app.
Social media has seen a rise in complaints from users expressing disappointment with the company.
Zepto CEO Aadit Palicha has also made headlines recently, accusing the CFO of a rival company of spreading false information and funding bots to damage Zepto's reputation.
In another blow, Zepto's Rural Mobilisation Programme is under scrutiny. The Rajdhani App Workers Union has accused the company's recruitment partners of unfairly reducing the wages of delivery agents from small towns and keeping them in poor living conditions.

Concerns rise over hygiene standards in dark stores amid quick commerce boom
Several packaged food companies have raised complaints about shoddy and unhygienic conditions in some dark stores from which quick commerce companies despatch purchases to consumers. Nearly a dozen have written to the platforms in the last two-three months, raising urgent concerns about lapses in storage and handling at the stores, citing specific violations. Dark stores are large warehouses that stock products for quick delivery. This comes as government authorities, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), are stepping up surprise inspections and audits at the thousands of dark stores mushrooming all over the country. Many of the companies did not want to be identified while confirming that they'd made complaints. 'We supply the freshest stock to our quick commerce partners complying to more than 70% shelf life and temperature guidance on categories like cheese,' said Varun Berry, managing director of biscuits, bakery and dairy maker Britannia Industries. 'Beyond this point we expect them to ensure best hygiene practices and FMFO (First Manufacturing First Out) in the last-mile delivery. With rapid expansion, we will need to work very closely with them to ensure no slip-ups happen. Companies making daily essentials, staples and premium grocery products have been reporting swift growth on quick commerce platforms compared with neighbourhood stores or modern trade. The pace of growth ranged from 50% to 100% in FY25. A senior executive at a large frozen foods company said odour transfer was one of the issues that had to be addressed.'We noticed that agarbatti sticks were being stored close to our frozen snack packs at the dark stores of a large platform. This runs the risk of migration of odour, so we immediately asked them to rectify the storage,' said a senior executive at a large frozen foods company. 'Ultimately, it's our brand that's the direct consumer interface and we can't let that suffer. Various large companies such as HUL, ITC, Britannia, Tata Consumer Products, PepsiCo, Amul, Parle Products, Coca-Cola, Mother Dairy and KRBL have also been introducing exclusive premium packs of teas, ice-creams, cookies, snacks, frozen foods and staples for sale only on quick commerce channels.'We've asked all the platforms to urgently step up routine audits on their own,' said Vikram Agarwal, managing director of Cornitos snacks maker Greendot Health Foods, which gets nearly 20% of its annual sales from quick commerce platforms now. 'The matter is even more concerning in case of franchised dark stores.'Earlier this week, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food business licence of a Zepto dark store in Dharavi after discovering safety and hygiene violations such as fungal contamination and unsanitary storage conditions during an inspection.'Hygiene protocols are nonnegotiable, and consumer trust remains sacrosanct, regardless of how or where the product is purchased,' said Kunal Sharma, head of marketing and business head, modern trade and ecommerce at the listed KRBL Ltd, which makes India Gate basmati rice. 'All platforms and partners must maintain rigorous hygiene and safety standards, and regulatory guidance from the FDA and FSSAI play a vital role in reinforcing these benchmarks.' FSSAI has stepped up audits at dark stores across cities, including the metros, tier-2 and smaller markets. 'As quick commerce revolutionises last-mile delivery, it brings new challenges where cold chain integrity and hygienic handling are absolutely non-negotiable,' said Srideep Kesavan, chief executive at Heritage Foods, which makes dairy products such as milk, flavoured milk and butter. 'Dark stores, which anchor this model, must reflect the standards consumers expect; strengthening hygiene protocols in quick commerce is essential to safeguard consumer trust.' More ex-federal workers in US face job hunt as grants & contracts vanish
By Eileen Sullivan and Lydia DePillis After Matt Minich was fired from his job with the Food and Drug Administration in February, he did what many scientists have done for years after leaving public service. He looked for a position with a university. Minich, 38, was one of thousands swept up in the mass layoffs of probationary workers at the beginning of President Trump's second administration. The shock of those early moves heralded more upheaval to come as the Department of Government Efficiency, led by the tech billionaire Elon Musk, raced through agency after agency, slashing staff, freezing spending and ripping up government contracts. In March, about 45 minutes after Minich accepted a job as a scientist in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, the program lost its federal grant funding. Minich, who had worked on reducing the negative health impacts of tobacco use, observed that he had the special honor of 'being DOGE-ed twice.' 'I'm doubly not needed by the federal government,' he said in an interview. He is still hunting for work. And like hundreds of thousands of other former civil servants forced into an increasingly crowded job market, he is finding that drastic cuts to grants and contracts in academia, consulting and direct services mean even fewer opportunities are available. Some states that were hiring, another avenue for former federal government employees, have pulled back. So, too, have the private contractors typically seen as a landing place. The situation is expected to worsen as more layoffs are announced, voluntary departures mount and workers who were placed on administrative leave see the clock run out. With Musk's time in Washington now done, a fuller picture of just how completely he and Trump have upended the role of government is coming into view. Federal tax dollars underpin entire professions, directly and indirectly, and the cuts led by Musk's operation have left some workers with nowhere to go. In Washington DC, and the surrounding area, the disruption has the hallmarks of the collapse of an industrial cluster, not unlike the disappearance of manufacturing jobs in the upper Midwest during the 2000s. Except this time, it is moving at lightning speed. In January, just as Trump was taking office, the civilian federal work force across the country had reached a post-World War II peak of 2.3 million, not including the Postal Service. Few agencies have publicly stated how many people have been fired or voluntarily resigned, but a rough count shows that federal agencies have lost some 135,000 to firings and voluntary resignation, with another 150,000 in planned reductions. Contracted and grant-funded workers — which the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta estimated to be as many as 4.6 million people — are harder to track in official data. The first contractor layoffs began in February with organisations that received funding from the US Agency for International Development, like Chemonics and FHI360. As more grants and contracts that were under review across government are terminated, job cuts have gained steam. Booz Allen Hamilton, the sprawling consulting firm based in Northern Virginia that gets 98 percent of its revenue from the federal government, announced that it was cutting 7 per cent of its 36,000-person staff. Even providers of Head Start, the low-income preschool program, have issued layoff notices because funding has been in doubt. While the national labor market remains stable, job loss is starting to become notable in the capital region. Unemployment rates in the District of Columbia and most of its surrounding counties have been on the rise since December. The number of people receiving unemployment insurance has been elevated in Virginia and DC over the past several months. Job postings in Washington have dropped across the board, according to the hiring platform Indeed, including in opportunities for administrative assistance, human resources and accounting. Local government agencies around Washington are hosting dozens of hiring events, and most of them are packed. Elaine Chalmers of Woodbridge, Va., was among 750 people who attended a recent resource fair in Arlington, Va., just outside Washington. The event offered free consultation for updating résumés, as well as professional headshots and workshops, including one on managing personal finances during a transition in employment. It was the fourth one she attended in the month since she left the Agriculture Department, where she had worked for 20 years, most recently in the division that ensured equal access to grants for rural communities. She resigned to escape the stress and uncertainty created by new mandates, such as erasing words like 'equity' and 'diversity' from department communications. 'It just became almost a character question for myself,' said Chalmers, 53. 'I couldn't honorably stay.'
