3,600 pairs of new license plates to be replaced after printing error
About 3,600 pairs of license plates were printed with the wrong amount of space between numbers and letters, office spokesperson Jana Spaulding said on a Friday evening phone call. She said the erroneous license plates were printed within the same time frame.
"It could potentially cause an issue with E-ZPass and other things that do that character reading," she said. "Obviously an inconvenience, which is unfortunate, but was caught quickly."
The new plates, which feature a pine tree reminiscent of the 1901 state flag, are being manufactured in Canada. They began replacing Maine's time-honored chickadee plates last month.
The 3,600 drivers who were issued the faulty plates are being notified by letter, Spaulding said.
The office will mail impacted drivers replacement plates and sticker tags at no cost. In the meantime, drivers are asked to use the errant plates and notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles of any issues related to scanning, Spaulding said.
"It's a relatively minor, short-term error," she said, adding that the issue affected only "3,600 out of a few million" the agency intends to distribute this year.
Those who receive replacement plates can return the faulty ones to the BMV or hold onto them as a keepsake, but they should not be used on a vehicle, Spaulding said.

Ford announces $5 billion US investment as part of its ‘next Model T moment'
Ford plans to invest billions in new electric vehicle production, calling it the company's 'next Model T moment.' Ford said Monday it will invest $5 billion into a new assembly line and battery production to build EVs, including for a new, unnamed model that Ford says will be the most affordable electric pickup truck on the market. Ford says about $2 billion of the investment will secure 2,200 hourly jobs at its Louisville assembly plant to build the company's next generation of electric vehicles. However, Ford said the conversion at the plant from gas powered SUVs to electric vehicle will require about 600 fewer jobs than it currently needs, at least partly because the new assembly line will be more efficient. Ford may also produce fewer cars. Ford is the latest company to announce a large investment in US operations as it faces steep tariffs on imports and demands by the Trump administration to shift manufacturing back to the United States. Ford already builds more cars in America than any automaker. But the company said Monday it does not plan to shift production of one of its electric models, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, from a plant in Cuautitlan, Mexico. Ford's announcement also introduced a new battery design, which will be smaller and lighter than its previous versions. The new battery will allow the company to price a new EV pickup at $30,000, making it one of the most affordable available. By comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup has a starting price of about $55,000. The new line will be up and running in 2027, the company said Monday. But the Trump administration has cut federal government support for electric vehicles by doing away with tax credits to help buyers, as well as rolling back emissions regulations put in place by the Biden administration. And Ford is currently losing money on its EVs. While its EV revenue nearly tripled in the first half of this year compared to a year ago, it still lost $2.2 billion in the EV segment during the same time period. Ford said the most significant change will be a different design for its assembly line, which has basically been in a straight line since its founder Henry Ford started the first auto assembly line in 1913. The automaker said its new assembly line will be a tree layout rather than a straight line, with several lines feeding vehicle parts into one another. Ford is developing a $30,000 midsized EV pickup
Despite the impending loss of federal rebates, Ford plans to give US EV production a huge boost. After hyping it last week as a "breakthrough" and "Model T moment," the company has announced a new Universal EV Platform to be shared by a new family of products. The first of those will be a midsized pickup with a starting price of around $30,000, likely similar in configuration to the popular Maverick. It will use the company's new prismatic LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. Ford will invest $5 billion, including $2 billion at its Louisville, Kentucky factory on top of $3 billion already announced for its BlueOval battery plant. It will expand the Louisville facility by 52,000 square feet and "create or secure" nearly 4,000 direct jobs, Ford added. Ford's only two EVs right now are the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, both of which use one-off platforms. With the Universal EV Platform, Ford will be able to build multiple vehicles including vans, cars and pickups that should be easier to build and thus cheaper. "The result: a simple, efficient, flexible ecosystem to deliver a family of affordable, electric, software-defined vehicles," the company said. Ford said that the platform will reduce parts by 20 percent versus a typical vehicle, with fewer fasteners and workstations and a 15 percent quicker assembly time. The company is also promising a lower cost of ownership over five years "than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y." Ford Universal EV Platform (Ford) The company also touted its LFP prismatic batteries as enabling space and weight savings along with cost reductions, due to the cobalt-free and nickel-free composition. However, the company's choice of LFP for its next-gen EVs has not been without controversy. Since Ford is licensing tech from China's CATL, it may lose out on tax credits of up to $700 million if Congress passes a bill banning federal support for battery plants that use tech or materials from China. The first vehicle will be a mid-sized four-door electric pickup set to launch in 2027. Ford hasn't yet revealed the name or shown a photo, but it will supposedly have more room than Toyota's latest RAV4 without even counting the frunk and truck bed. Buyers will be able to lock gear like bikes or surfboards into that bed, eliminating the need for roof or trailer hitch racks. It will have a low center of gravity from the battery, instant torque and a 0 to 60 mph time "as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost [around 4.5 seconds], with more downforce," Ford said. Ford hasn't detailed other vehicles that will be built on the platform, but an animation shows a variety ranging from utility vans to crossovers to SUVs to sedans, along with the aforementioned pickup. One rumor states that the new pickup could be called the Ranchero (based on a trademark filing) or it may use the Ranger name. In any case, it's clearly a big deal for Ford, since the company will have no less than three announcements for it.
