Gobind: Malaysia secures RM2.97bil digital investments from China
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has secured RM2.97 billion in confirmed digital investments from leading Chinese technology players, paving the way for the creation of over 6,800 high-value digital jobs nationwide, said Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo.
He said the achievement, which was the result of the recent high-level mission to China led by him, has reaffirmed Malaysia's rising position as a regional leader in digital transformation and innovation.
According to him, the mission, held in conjunction with the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2025 in Shanghai, yielded concrete outcomes and strategic advancements that will accelerate Malaysia's transition into a digitally driven, high-income economy.
In a statement today, Gobind said companies such as Baidu (via Wisetech), Tsing Digital, iSoftStone, Inspur Group, China Mobile International, and China Unicom, have pledged their support for Malaysia's digital aspirations, bringing with them advanced technologies and deep expertise that will strengthen the nation's tech ecosystem.
"The mission further demonstrated the strength and momentum of the Malaysia Digital (MD) initiative, which continues to attract high-quality investments aligned with national development priorities.
"Through MD Status recognitions and strategic partnerships, Malaysia is advancing its global digital competitiveness while opening new opportunities in Selangor, Johor, and Perak,' he said.
Gobind has also called on Chinese companies to establish more innovation centres in Malaysia, emphasising the country's ambition to become a hub for digital innovation in ASEAN.
He highlighted the importance of building new technology-based ecosystems such as autonomous mobility platforms and a national command centre that will serve as key enablers of smart city development and advanced digital governance.
"As digital technologies reshape every facet of society, Malaysia continues to lead with a values-based and forward-looking approach,' he said.
The minister highlighted the growing significance of artificial intelligence (AI) agents -- intelligent systems capable of autonomous decision-making and task execution -- as a defining feature of the modern digital landscape.
"These systems are revolutionising public services and industry, but their success depends on public confidence that they operate in ways that are safe, ethical, and aligned with societal values,' he said.
He also announced Malaysia's plan to launch the ASEAN AI Safety Network during its ASEAN chairmanship this year to help harmonise governance frameworks across the region.
Gobind noted that the world is entering the age of intelligence, where AI agents will play increasingly critical roles, and that people must trust that these systems are aligned with their values and societal needs.
To support responsible AI deployment, he proposed the development of AI certification frameworks, a mechanism to ensure that emerging technologies reflect national priorities, cultural context, and ethical safeguards. - Bernama

The centre serves as a bridge to engage with the Southeast Asia region to develop an international land-sea trade corridor. It also plays a critical role in sharing Hainan's development narrative, including tourism, commercial expansion and policy reforms. Hainan Daily Press Group deputy editor-in-chief Niu Xiaomin said Malaysia was chosen because it is home to a sizeable population of Chinese descendants, particularly the Hainanese community, which has preserved deep-rooted cultural ties and continues to uphold strong traditions. He hoped the stories of Malaysian Chinese and Chinese citizens could serve as a cultural bridge, strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations while promoting mutual understanding and highlighting shared values across the region. He also said that Hainan would officially become a free trade port on Dec 18, allowing for some 74% of goods entering the island to enjoy zero-tariff benefits. "This marks a new starting point for Hainan's journey towards a higher level of openness to the outside world," he said at the launch of the HIMC–Asean Liaison Centre here on Friday (Aug 1). The event also saw the establishment of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor Asean Economic and Trade Station, and the Haifeng International Film and Television Base Asean Centre. Several agreements on media collaboration were also signed with Bernama, Nanyang Siang Pau and Kwong Wah Yit Poh to jointly produce programmes and conduct activities about Malaysia and Hainan. Partnerships were also established between HIMC and the Federation of Hainan Association Malaysia, Mila University and Lingshui Yingli Wanxiang Digital Media Industry. The HIMC–Asean Liaison Centre also serves as the Malaysia office for Guangxi International Communication Centre and the International Communication Centre of Guizhou Radio and TV Station. Japanese woman with child injured in subway station attack in China, says Tokyo embassy
BEIJING (AFP): An "unknown assailant" attacked and wounded a Japanese national accompanied by a child in the Chinese city of Suzhou, Tokyo's embassy said Friday, calling on Beijing to prevent such incidents. The incident comes a year after a Japanese mother and child were wounded in a knife attack in the same city. A Chinese woman had died trying to stop the assailant. In Thursday's attack, "a Japanese national walking with a child was struck by what appeared to be a rock by an unknown assailant inside a Suzhou, Jiangsu Province subway station", Tokyo's embassy in Beijing told AFP in a statement. A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry told AFP that "the suspect has been apprehended". The victim was "promptly taken to hospital for treatment, and there is no threat to life", the ministry said. China and Japan are key trading partners, but increased friction over territorial rivalries and military spending has frayed ties in recent years. Japan's brutal occupation of parts of China before and during World War II remains a sore point, with Beijing accusing Tokyo of failing to atone for its past. In June last year, a Japanese mother and child were attacked in Suzhou on the anniversary of the 1931 "Mukden incident", known in China as a day of national humiliation. The 1931 explosion of a railway in China was used by Japanese soldiers as a pretext to occupy the city of Mukden, now called Shenyang, and invade the wider region of Manchuria. And in September, a Japanese schoolboy was fatally stabbed in the southern city of Shenzhen. Media reports about the latest attack in Suzhou were censored on the Chinese messaging app WeChat. "The Japanese government has urged the Chinese government to... severely punish the suspect, prevent similar incidents, and ensure the safety of Japanese nationals", Tokyo's embassy said Friday. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are coming together to tackle mounting global economic uncertainties through CEO Connects 2025 conference. The event aimed to foster strategic partnerships, share insights on pressing business challenges, and empower SMEs to thrive amid shifting trade dynamics, ESG demands and financial constraints. Supported by Media Prima Bhd, EcoWorld and the SME Association of Malaysia, the conference featured a lineup of panels, keynote talks and networking sessions conducted in Chinese.
