Woman Loses RM109,000 To Fake Investment Scheme
DUNGUN, May 26 (Bernama) -- A woman lost RM109,000 after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme syndicate.
Dungun police chief Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir said the victim, a clerk, came across a stock investment advertisement on Facebook in March and later contacted a person claiming to be an agent from an investment company via WhatsApp.
'She was instructed to open an investment account called MooMoo and made two deposits totalling RM3,000. 'However, after nearly two weeks without any returns, she was asked to download another app, MYCDTL, to supposedly receive the promised profits,' Maizura said in a statement today.
She said the victim then withdrew RM2,835.31 from the MooMoo account and transferred it to the MYCDTL account, along with an additional RM2,000 as investment.
Between April and May, the victim made several transfers totalling RM109,000 into the MYCDTL account.
Realising she had been scammed, she lodged a police report yesterday after failing to receive any returns.
Maizura advised the public to verify investment opportunities through official platforms such as Semak Mule (CCID), Bank Negara Malaysia, and the Securities Commission before committing to any financial schemes.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- The Inland Revenue Board (HASiL) is stepping up its global cooperation to track down taxpayers who fail to comply, including those transferring assets or income overseas. Speaking on the radio programme POV: Perspektif Bukan Persepsi, hosted by Kamal Affandi Hashim and focused on tax evasion, Muhammad Azhari explained that Malaysia's participation in the Forum on Tax Administration and the ASEAN network has helped it adopt best practices and strengthen its capacity through big data analytics and risk profiling. Alongside enforcement efforts, HASiL has also rolled out public education campaigns and adopted a 'Compliance Before Enforcement' approach to encourage voluntary tax compliance. Social media, he added, is an increasingly valuable resource in uncovering suspicious financial activity. 'We analyse lifestyles displayed online and compare them with declared incomes, looking out for undeclared businesses, hidden assets and social or business networks,' he noted. Where discrepancies emerge, he said HASiL will conduct audits and investigations, actions that are targeted and data-driven rather than arbitrary. Muhammad Azhari also urged the public to act as watchdogs, encouraging them to report individuals or companies that live beyond their declared means or operate without proper registration.

Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year.
