Greater Manchester set for another sunny weekend - but Met Office says change on the way

Yahoo16-05-2025

Glorious sunshine looks set to bask over Greater Manchester again this weekend - but a change is on the horizon.
There has been plenty of warm, sunny weather across the country this spring, with weeks of almost-constant blue skies since March.
Temperatures have regularly hovered around 20C and beyond, hitting the high 20s in parts of the UK on numerous occasions over the last few weeks.

The North West has seen its driest start to a year for almost a century - leading to reservoir levels plummeting.
Similar conditions are expected this weekend and at the beginning of next week in Greater Manchester, according to the latest Met Office forecast.
Highs of 22C are forecast today (May 16), on Sunday and next Wednesday, with top temperatures of 21C on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
Conditions will be mostly clear and sunny throughout those days, although the Met Office expects an overcast start to Saturday, clearing up by late morning.

Forecasters expect conditions to change later this month though - and there could be a noticeable shift in weather from next Thursday.
The latest Met Office forecast says Greater Manchester will see more cloud cover from Thursday, with sunny intervals rather than wall to wall clear skies.
That pattern looks set to continue heading into next weekend, with Friday forecast to be mostly cloudy, with a 30 per cent chance of rain in the early hours of the morning.
Temperatures will still be warm however, with highs of 20C and 19C forecast for those two days.
And overnight conditions could be stuffier, with lows rising from 7C this weekend to 11C next Thursday night.

Across the UK, the Met Office says people can expect to see a firm change in conditions by the end of the month with wetter weather on the way - although temperatures will still be warm for this time of year.
The latest long-range forecast for May 20 to 29 says: "Most of the UK will be fine with sunny spells during the first part of this period. A few showers are possible in the south at first but otherwise the majority of places will be dry.
"Temperatures are likely to be above normal for the time of year. Into the bank holiday weekend and following week, a change in weather type is expected.
"More unsettled conditions are likely to develop, with weather systems moving in from the Atlantic. This will bring spells of rain to many areas, perhaps heavy at times, with a risk of strong winds in places.
"Some drier and brighter intervals are likely between systems. Temperatures will probably be near normal or slightly above."

Hot weather makes a brief appearance this week across Maryland

After a comfortable start to the week, temperatures are on the rise again across central Maryland, setting the stage for what could be the hottest day of the year before a shift to a stormier, cooler pattern heading into the weekend. Tonight, skies will be partly cloudy with lower humidity settling in behind a weak frontal boundary. Overnight lows will drop into the 60s, offering a pleasant and seasonable night for much of the region. Wednesday brings a return to sunshine and summer-like warmth. With high pressure building overhead, skies will be mostly sunny and temperatures will climb into the upper 80s by the afternoon. Humidity levels will remain manageable, but the heat will be noticeable, especially during the peak of the day. Thursday will mark the beginning of a much more humid stretch, with dew points rising and the air turning sticky once again. Partly cloudy skies will dominate, and highs will soar into the low 90s, making it potentially the hottest day of the year so far in the Baltimore area. Heat indices could push into the mid-90s during the afternoon, especially in more urbanized locations. Friday will remain hot and humid, with highs near 90 degrees. While most of the day will stay dry, the added moisture and daytime heating could trigger a few scattered storms in the afternoon and evening. Any storms that do develop may produce gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall. The weather pattern becomes more unsettled over the weekend, with better chances for rain and thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday. High temperatures on Saturday will reach near 80, with scattered showers and storms possible throughout the day. On Father's Day Sunday, expect highs in the upper 70s to near 80, with continued opportunities for showers and thunderstorms—especially during the afternoon and evening hours. While not a washout, outdoor plans may need to be flexible depending on the timing of storm development. The unsettled weather continues into Monday, as a frontal boundary stalls nearby. Expect mostly cloudy skies, periods of rain, and the potential for a few embedded thunderstorms. Highs will remain in the low 80s. By Tuesday, a lingering shower is still possible early in the day, but conditions should gradually improve with partial clearing expected by the afternoon. Highs will again top out in the low 80s. Looking ahead to Wednesday, drier air returns with sunshine and warm temperatures. Highs will be solidly in the 80s, providing a brief return to fair weather before the next system approaches later in the week.

Flooding the main threat as showers, isolated storms move across North Texas in coming days

Good Tuesday morning! The First Alert Weather Team has been tracking a complex of storms to the west on Tuesday morning as they move into the area. The northern edge of the complex is breaking up as it heads east into Palo Pinto and Parker counties. Some of this activity may hold together as it nears Tarrant County. The southern edge of the line is more robust and is capable of small hail, gusty winds and heavy rainfall. The highest rain chances today are southwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and south of I-20. A few afternoon storms in DFW can't be ruled out as we are on the northern fringe of the activity. Temperatures on Tuesday will be cooler south of I-20 due to the rain and clouds, and warmer along the Red River where it remains drier. First Alert Weather days have been issued for Wednesday and Thursday as waves of heavy rain will move through the area. A slow-moving area of low pressure will track across North Texas tomorrow through Friday. Flooding is the main concern, but an isolated severe storm with hail and damaging winds can't be ruled out. Please remember "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Do not try and drive through water-covered roadways, as it is very hard to estimate how deep the water is, and you could put yourself in a life-threatening situation. The low-pressure system shifts east of the area this weekend, allowing for more sunshine, drier conditions and warmer temperatures.
