Crew abandons EV ship inferno

News.com.au4 days ago

A cargo ship carrying around 3000 cars has been abandoned in the Pacific Ocean and left to burn.
The Morning Midas was carrying around 800 electric vehicles from China en route to Mexico when it caught fire about 450km south of Alaska.
The US Coast Guard Alaska Division was called to the scene of the unfolding disaster by a distress call at around 3.15pm on Tuesday (local time) and first witnessed smoke coming from the deck of the vessel, where the EVs were said to be stowed.
The crew of the Morning Midas were unable to get the fire under control and in consultation with the US Coast Guard decided to abandon ship, with all 22 sailors taken to safety.
The incident has underlined the safety issues with transporting electric vehicles whose lithium ion batteries can catch fire and are very hard to put out - sometime burning for two weeks.
The current status of the ship is unknown with the US Coast Guard last witnessing smoke pouring out of the ship.
'
'As the search and rescue portion of our response concludes, our crews are working closely with the vessel's parent company, Zodiac Maritime, to determine the disposition of the vessel,' said Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard's Seventeenth District.
'We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel Cosco Hellas, who helped save 22 lives.'
The 46,800 tone Morning Midas, which flies under the Liberia flag, was built by the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co, in 2006, The Seattle Times reported.
It left the Chinese port of Yantai on May 6, according to Bloomberg. It was en route to Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico.
This isn't the first time a car-carrying ship has burnt down with EVs on board.
In 2023 the Fremantle Highway, a car carrying ship, caught fire with about 3000 cars on board near the Netherlands. It followed the 2022 Felicity Ace disaster – a ship that caught fire in the Atlantic with around 4000 vehicles on board. The crew abandoned ship, setting the enormous car carrier adrift near Portugal. The vessel capsized and sank with a full load of luxury vehicles including 1100 Porsches. A lawsuit took aim at Porsche for the Felicity Ace fire, blaming its electric cars for the fire.
Electric vehicle fires are notoriously difficult to put out.
Porsche spokesman Björn Förster said in 2024 that 'thermal runaway' fires involving electric cars cannot be stopped by conventional means.
'When the car is burning, it will be burning for two weeks,' he said.
Following the Felicity Ace fire, Australian vehicle importer Neville Crichton said he had no doubt the incidents would drive up the retail price of vehicles, as insurance companies had dramatically increased the cost of coverage for cars at sea.

Federal politics: Anthony Albanese says he won't loosen biosecurity rules to secure US tariff exemption — as it happened

The Nationals leader and shadow trade minister say the Albanese government shouldn't trade away Australia's biosecurity to secure an exemption from US tariffs. The government is reviewing whether to permit the import of beef born and raised in Mexico and Canada but slaughtered in the US to Australia, but Anthony Albanese has said Australia will not loosen or compromise its biosecurity rules to secure an exemption. Take a look back at the day's coverage.

Lunch Wrap: ASX wobbles; Trump-Xi phone call lifts iron ore but sinks lithium

ASX wobbles at lunch but miners rallied early on Trump-Xi call Critical minerals sink while Tesla crashes 14pc Worley wins job in Alaska, Ora Banda dips The ASX edged higher in early trade on Friday as the index brushed right up against record territory. But… it hasn't sustained, wobbling back down again to -0.15% intraday so far. Miners and energy names did the heavy lifting early, though, after Donald Trump and Xi Jinping finally picked up the phone and agreed to resume trade talks. Trump called it a 'very good call", and markets took that as a sign that China might keep buying iron ore and crude by the boatload. Iron ore jumped to nearly US$96.50 a tonne, and Brent oil climbed, too. But here's the twist. The Trump–Xi thaw, while good for iron ore, actually walloped lithium and rare earths stocks. If China-US trade cools down, then maybe pressure on critical mineral supply eases, too. And that means less panic buying. Local stocks like Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) and IGO (ASX:IGO) got hammered by 5-6% this morning on the news. Meanwhile, Tesla plunged by 14%, the biggest single-day hit to its market cap, ever. Investors scrambled for the exits after Trump threatened to rip up Elon's government contracts, claiming the world's richest man had 'gone crazy' since finishing his post at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. Musk didn't exactly go quiet into the night. He lit up X with claims he was the one who got Trump elected, suggested Trump's name appears in the Epstein files, and all but challenged him to a cage fight. Even Bitcoin felt the fallout, sliding 3% to just above US$100k as traders cringed at the chaos. Back on home soil, Utilities and Energy were the two best sectors this morning: In the large caps space, Worley (ASX:WOR) booked itself a big job, landing a contract with Glenfarne to support engineering works on Alaska's LNG pipeline. WOR's shares were flat. Ora Banda (ASX:OBM) got whacked 9% after admitting its full-year gold output is going to fall short due to extended downtime at the Davyhurst project. SkyCity Entertainment Group (ASX:SKC) jumped 1% after launching a $330 million lawsuit against Fletcher Building (ASX:FBU) over what it claims was 'gross negligence' during construction of a New Zealand convention centre. Fletcher slid 3%, presumably with a team of lawyers now sleeping in the office. Lithium sector faces significant ‘pressure' amid weak electric vehicle demand

eToro Market Analyst Josh Gilbert says the Australian lithium sector is under pressure amid weak electric vehicle demand and high Chinese inventories. 'It comes after what's been a really tough year for lithium miners,' Mr Gilbert told Sky News host Ed Boyd. 'Pilbara, which is one of the biggest names here in Australia, has been one of the worst performers on the ASX200 so far this year. 'Lithium prices have fallen … for context, prices are down about 40 per cent. 'That's coming from a few things, right, weak electric vehicle demand … high inventories … really putting pressure on the lithium sector.'
