Sask. wildfires bring new complications for northern residents, firefighters
Several days after the initial evacuation of the La Ronge area, problems continue to emerge that go beyond the fire itself.
Families from the area face new challenges as the days go on.
When the Johnson family arrived in Macdowell after evacuating from La Ronge, three of their horses spooked and went missing.
'We got down here, and we let them out,' said owner Tina Johnson.
'It's an unfamiliar place and they're scared. And the little ones, our ponies busted through the fence and took off.'
Luckily, all three horses were found uninjured late Thursday afternoon.
All SaskTel services are unavailable in La Ronge and the surrounding area — and in all communities and areas directly north and northeast of La Ronge.
'We're hoping that we'll be able to start restoring services as the fires subside,' said Greg Jacobs, representing SaskTel.
'But really, all of the major fires are still posing significant hazards to our crews and to infrastructure.'
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) said that damages to infrastructure have impacted its communication with fire crews.
'So, another little complicating factor that's beyond the fire scope, but directly having an impact on our ability to do our work,' said Steve Roberts with the SPSA.
For the time being, SaskTel says it will waive all wireless data overage fees for customers who had to leave northern Saskatchewan.
The Métis Nation-Saskatchewan government is opening the Batoche festival grounds to anyone escaping the northern wildfires, and the Prince Albert Exhibition Association is opening its RV and trailer campground to those impacted.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the Long Lake wildfire is still out of control and estimated at 3,210 hectares. Three CL215T planes from Alberta that are on loan to New Brunswick helped with a quick strike on Tuesday afternoon. Rudderham said Canadian Forces Base Greenwood is housing the planes and their crews. Officials believe the Long Lake wildfire, which began burning last Wednesday, was caused by a lightning strike. Evacuation centre hours The evacuation reception centre and shelter for wildfire evacuees moved over the weekend to the Nova Scotia Community College Annapolis Valley Campus in Middleton. State of local emergency The wildfire prompted the Municipality of the County of Annapolis to declare a state of local emergency on Saturday. The municipal state of local emergency is in effect for a week, unless renewed or terminated sooner. Residents are asked to follow all official instructions and directives from emergency officials. The declaration also prohibits the inflation of prices for essential goods and services. Residents are being urged to monitor official updates from the Annapolis Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO) and other official government sources or call 1-833-806-1515 for public information related to the wildfire and evacuation supports. Air quality statement An air quality statement remains in effect for Annapolis County due to the wildfire, which is reducing local air quality. Flooding forces evacuation, closure in B.C. provincial park
Flooding has forced the evacuation and partial closure of Bugaboo Provincial Park, a rugged and mountainous area popular with hikers and rock climbers, in southeastern British Columbia. More than 60 people were airlifted from the East Kootenay park due to the flooding on Sunday, according to the Alpine Club of Canada and a local search-and-rescue group. ADVERTISEMENT Columbia Valley Search and Rescue says in a social media post that all hikers and climbers were safely removed from the core area of the park with assistance from a local helicopter operator. The province has closed approximately 250 hectares of the park, which includes the Bugaboo Spires Trail and the Conrad Kain Hut Trail, as well as the Applebee Dome Campground and the Boulder Campground, due to the flooding. 'Until flooding subsides and Parks staff are able to assess residual hazards and damage done to facilities, the entire core Area of Bugaboo Park, including the Kain Hut Trail, is closed,' BC Parks said in an advisory. Areas of the park outside the closure zone remain open to visitors. The closure will remain in effect until further notice. Some evacuation orders, alerts linked to Vancouver Island wildfire lifted
Social Sharing Some of the evacuation orders and alerts linked to the Mount Underwood wildfire on Vancouver Island have been lifted or downgraded, as firefighters report "minimal" behaviour from the blaze. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, the City of Port Alberni and the Tseshaht First Nation jointly issued an update at 8 a.m. saying evacuation orders are lifted for the China Creek Campground and Headquarters Bay, which remain on evacuation alert. The update also says that the City of Port Alberni and the Tseshaht First Nation's reserves are no longer under alert. The Cowichan Valley Regional District says it has also rescinded an evacuation order for a number of properties, noting that "the threat to life and safety has passed." The main road access to Bamfield, B.C., remains closed for a stretch between the community and Port Alberni. The B.C. Wildfire Service says significant rainfall in the area over the weekend helped reduce fire behaviour at Mount Underwood, and another eight millimetres of rain fell on the blaze on Tuesday. The fire is still listed as out of control, but the service says the fire is not expected to grow beyond its 36-square-kilometres size.
