Contract sanitary workers stage dharna for wage hike
As more than 800 contract sanitary workers are carrying out cleaning operations within the city, they were demanding increased wages and extension of social security schemes like employees' provident fund and Employees' State Insurance Scheme, besides a few more benefits.
When the sanitary workers affiliated to the AICCTU struck work on Wednesday morning, cleaning operations came to a grinding halt and the agitation intensified when the protestors staged a dharna in front of the Corporation's administrative office around 7 a.m. to highlight their demand.
When the Corporation officials chose to ignore the agitation, the sanitary workers sat on the Thoothukudi – Tirunelveli highway to block the vehicular traffic.
After the police, who diverted the traffic, held talks with the protesters, they moved to the roadside to continue their protest till afternoon.
As Mayor Jegan Periyasamy held talks with them in the afternoon, he assured the protesters that he would persuade the contract firm to increase their wages and the dharna was called off around 5 p.m.

Residents seek reconstruction of damaged drainage channels
Seeking the reconstruction of the damaged drainage channel with bridge in their area, a group of residents from Nambirajapuram in ward 14 under Thatchanallur Zone of the Corporation submitted petition during the weekly grievances redress meeting organised by the urban civic body on Tuesday. The petitioners said sewage was flowing along the streets of Nambirajapuram after the drainage channels in this area were damaged and the flow of drainage from the houses is clogged at several places. Hence, the Corporation should reconstruct the damaged drainage channels again with a bridge to ensure continuous flow of the grey water. Moreover, the private land through which the drainage was flowing in the past had been converted into housing plots. Hence, the Corporation should construct drainage channels along the private land for properly taking the sewage to the primary channel, they said. The irrigation channel in Nambirajapuram, which was damaged during the underground drainage work, should also be repaired considering the farmers' welfare. 'Since the water overflowing from the damaged irrigation channel enters the cultivable lands nearby, farmers of these lands cannot go in for cultivation of any crop. Hence, the Corporation should complete these works before the onset of northeast monsoon,' the petitioners appealed. A group of residents from Kokkirakulam in ward 31 submitted petition appealing to the Corporation to repair the hand-pumps and the overhead tank in their area. Councillor V. Jeganathan of ward 5 submitted a petition seeking the re-laying of the roads in Thimmarajapuram, Kakkan Nagar, Police Quarters, VOC Nagar, New Colony and Sangeetha Colony. 'Since the residents are telling me that they would not vote for the DMK if the roads are not re-laid before the Northeast monsoon, the Corporation should pay immediate attention to this serious issue,' Mr. Jeganathan said. Councillor R. Muthusubramanian of ward 55 submitted a petition seeking the replacement of 28 dead LED bulbs along the overbridge connecting wards 55 and 39. 'Even though the road and the overbridge belong to the Department of Highways, the lights are maintained by the Corporation, which should take steps for replacing the defunct lights,' Mr. Muthusubramanian said. Residents of Raja Nagar in ward 52 in Melapalayam Zone submitted a petition complaining about the supply of drinking water mixed with sewage. Hence, the Corporation should take immediate steps to save the public from the water-borne diseases by repairing or replacing the ruptured drinking water pipes. Residents of Tuckerammalpuram North Streets submitted a petition seeking re-laying of the road damaged in underground drainage project.

Madras HC to hear today plea against Chennai corporation's private sanitation contract
The Madras High Court will on Tuesday hear a petition opposing the Greater Chennai Corporation's decision to hand over sanitation work in two city zones to a private contractor -- a move that has triggered intense protests from workers. On June 16, the Corporation awarded a Rs 276 crore cleaning services contract for Zones 5 and 6 to a private firm. The Workers' Rights Movement, led by its president K. Bharathi, moved the High Court seeking to quash the resolution, arguing that the decision threatens the livelihood and job security of thousands of workers. According to the petition, 2,242 permanent workers are to be transferred to other zones, while 1,953 temporary workers will be brought under the contractor's control. The petitioner contends that these employees will be subject to the contractor's terms, risking arbitrary dismissal, lower wages, and loss of benefits. It is further alleged that the outsourcing decision was made without mandatory approval from the labour court, despite a related case being sub judice. The move has sparked more than 10 days of continuous demonstrations outside the Corporation's Ripon Building headquarters, with sanitation workers and unions demanding that the contract be cancelled. Protesters accuse the civic body of ignoring their pleas and prioritising commercial considerations over employee welfare. When the matter came up on Monday, Advocate General P.S. Raman, representing the Corporation, requested additional time to submit a revised counter-affidavit. He said corrections had been made to an earlier version, and the updated document required the Commissioner's signature before filing. The petitioner's counsel opposed any further delay, telling the court that 'nearly 2,000 workers have been thrown out like garbage' and were in urgent need of relief. The counsel stressed that prolonging the process would deepen the hardship of those affected. After hearing both sides, the court directed that the matter be listed for hearing on Tuesday and ordered the Corporation to file its reply without fail. The case's outcome could have far-reaching consequences for the city's approach to sanitation management and the future of public sector jobs in the civic workforce.
