Notre Dame football started fall practice today and here are some highlights from the day

USA Today31-07-2025
While Notre Dame football got started with its fall practice today, there wasn't too much to take away from it as they were just in shells, but head coach Marcus Freeman did break down some of the action following the session.
That doesn't mean that there weren't some clips getting shared on social media, and there were plenty that should make Irish fans happy. Notre Dame once again has lofty goals for the 2025 season, as they look to return to the College Football Playoff and hopefully cap it off by winning the last game of the season.
The Irish played as many games as a team could last year, and they now know what it takes to get there. Notre Dame has all the pieces to get back, but we are just excited that football has returned in South Bend.
Take a look below at some of the practice clips that were shared.
Defensive end Bryce Young
Many, including myself, think that Young is poised for a breakout season after an impressive true freshman campaign. He was just scratching the surface during year one, and it will be very interesting to see the progress that he has made in the off-season. Young looks bigger and has great bend with lateral movement.
Wide receiver Malachi Fields
The Virginia transfer has been with the program since the spring, but couldn't take part in many team activities. He's full-go now, and will be giving the offense a huge boost. Fields is a big target who brings tons of experience with him to South Bend. He could be in line for a massive season.
Defensive end Boubacar Traore
After missing a good portion of last fall due to an injury, Traore will be slowly brought back into action. He looks good here, and it seems like his explosiveness has returned. He could play a very big part in Notre Dame's defense this fall, once the staff feels like he's fully ready to contribute.
Wide receiver Cam Williams
It was odd that Williams couldn't crack the rotation last fall, as he was one of the highest ranked incoming recruits in his class. The off-season did him well, as he looks to have added on some good weight that will make a difference going up against defensive backs at this level. If Williams even has a mini-breakout, this could be the deepest wide receiver group that the Irish have had in years.
The quarterbacks
Sure, they're just throwing the ball around, but this gives us a great look at who is getting the ball out quickly as they are rolling to their right. Minchey looks so smooth throwing on the move, and while Carr doesn't look bad, it does look like he'll have to start his load a bit quicker. Odd seeing Tyler Buchner back with this group, but there is a need for veteran leadership, and he is it.
Carson Hobbs picking off CJ Carr
This was one of the three reported interceptions for Carr on the day, and you can't really blame him all that much about this one. The throw was right there, but KK Smith just couldn't haul it in. Honestly, you can't take much away from one practice, and while we all would have liked to see Carr shinning during the first day, he's going to have much better ones as the Irish continue to build towards the season opener.

Notre Dame's 2026 recruiting class ranking moves up following Elijah Golden's commitment

It has been a great 2026 recruiting cycle for Notre Dame football, and it got even better on Saturday as they received a commitment from Florida defensive lineman Elijah Golden. The Irish now have twenty-seven commitments, and with the addition of Golden, they moved up two spots from the No. 5 overall class to the No. 3 unit in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. Just two teams sit above Notre Dame at the moment in Georgia and USC, but both of them have at least four more commitments than the Irish do. It very much seems like the class is now full, but in recruiting you never know what is next. While many of the current commitments have voiced that they are firm with the Irish, things could change between now and when the first signing period happens in December. Looking a bit deeper into the rankings, Notre Dame has one of the best average-per-recruit, as they are at 92.4, a number that is better than both teams ranked above them. Just a few schools are higher in the top-10, with Oregon, Alabama, and LSU being just above the Irish in that metric. Regardless, this will go down as one of the best Notre Dame football recruiting classes in history, but this very well could be the norm as head coach Marcus Freeman has completely turned the program around. Notre Dame loses TE Kevin Bauman and RB Kedren Young to season-ending knee injuries

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame announced Saturday that sixth-year tight end Kevin Bauman and second-year running back Kedren Young suffered season-ending knee injuries in practice this week. Notre Dame already was without Charles Jagusah, its projected right guard, after he was injured in a utility task vehicle accident in Wyoming last month. Jagusah had surgery to repair a broken humerus bone in his left arm, and coach Marcus Freeman said last week he's hopeful Jagusah will play this season. But Bauman won't play this year because of an articular cartilage injury in his left knee, which will require surgery. He also announced on social media this is the end of his football career. 'Unfortunately, I have suffered yet another season-ending injury. I have been struggling to let it all soak in,' Baumann wrote on Instagram. 'I have taken a few days and prayed about it. While my football journey has come to an end, I can confidently say the rest of my life is just getting started.' Bauman had his 2021 cut short because of an injury, missed all but three games in 2022 and all of 2023 because of injuries. He appeared in all 14 games last season and was expected to play a more significant role this season after Mitchell Evans was selected in the fifth round of April's NFL draft. He caught six passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. 'Notre Dame means everything to me: opportunity, growth, resilience,' Bauman wrote. 'I have made incredible connections and, most importantly, I have grown my faith to the strongest it has ever been. This place is so special.' Tight end Cooper Flanagan also is being held out of practice as he continues to recover from an injured Achilles tendon, which he suffered against Georgia during Notre Dame's playoff run. Freeman said he's optimistic about Flanagan returning this year. Young's career was just getting started when he tore anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee this week. The former Texas prep star rushed for 116 yards in seven games last season with the Fighting Irish. He was expected to add depth to an already stacked backfield. Young broke Lufkin High School's career rushing record before arriving at Notre Dame. The Irish open their season Aug. 31 at Miami.
