Man, 37, jailed for ‘vicious and persistent' attack on police officer
Richard Nodwell of Oakfield, Cwmbran, repeatedly punched and kicked police constable Nathan Attwell in the Welsh town on December 20 2023, resulting in a fractured cheekbone and eye socket.
Cardiff Crown Court heard on Tuesday that he then went on to spit at one officer and bit the boot of another, with nine people needed to arrest him.
Mr Attwell, who was on his own, approached Nodwell while responding to a 999 call from the defendant's daughter, who said he was trying to get into her house.
Gareth James, speaking on behalf of the prosecution, said call handlers could hear sounds of screaming.
'The officer found the defendant near to Our Lady of Angels Church in Cwmbran,' he said.
'The defendant was immediately confrontational and aggressive with the officer, he was visibly angry, shouting in officer's face and not at all cooperative as Mr Attwell tried to speak to him in an effort to deescalate the situation.'
As Mr Attwell asked Nodwell to show him his hands, concerned he may be concealing a weapon, 'he launched a vicious and persistent attack' on the officer, punching him multiple times to the face before pushing him to the ground.
He continued the assault, using both fists to hit the officer in the face and head before kicking him and running away.
In body-worn footage shown to the court, Mr Attwell could be seen struggling to his feet and propping himself up, with blood pouring down the wall.
Mr Attwell suffered a fractured cheekbone, fractured eye socket, fractured nose, a laceration to the back of the head and a cut to the left eye which required stitches.
When other officers arrived to arrest Nodwell, he continued to be aggressive, assaulting one officer by spitting on his hand and biting another's boot on the lower shin.
The judge said he counted 'eight or nine' officers being needed to bring the defendant to the ground.
A hood was put over Nodwell's face to stop him spitting, and he became increasingly irritated, claiming to have asthma and demanding they 'get off my face now' because it was 'harassment'.
He said: 'I'm going to bash you all up.'
Mr James said Nodwell had previous convictions for assaulting police officers.
Nodwell, who pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of assault of an emergency worker, was given an extended sentence by the judge, with a six-year and four-month prison sentence and a further three years on licence.
His Honour Judge Hywel James said: 'I have seen the bodyworn footage of (Mr Attwell's) actions, which I assess as being entirely appropriate.
'He showed considerable courtesy and patience in the manner he dealt with you.
'Your response was to, without warning, punch PC Attwell to his face with considerable force.'
The judge said he counted 12 to 13 punches and one kick to the head 'with force'.
'He was, in my assessment, no threat to you at any time. He was in an extremely vulnerable position lying on the ground when you chose to kick him.'
Ryan Randall, senior prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement: 'This is one of the most shocking attacks on a police officer I have seen.
'Nodwell carried out this sickening act of violence on a uniformed officer conducting his lawful duties, showing a complete disregard for his authority.
'Any assault or abuse of an emergency worker is viewed extremely seriously by the CPS.
'Emergency workers are there to help the public and should be able to do so safely and without fear. '

Younger dealer caught after using drugs phone to book taxis
A young drug dealer was found to be involved in the supply of cocaine and cannabis after he sent "bulk messages" to clients advertising drugs. He was discovered as the owner of a drugs line after he used the number of book taxis and was seen on CCTV topping up the phone. Tyler Beer, 20, of Cardiff, was outed as a drug dealer after police seized two mobile phones in an unrelated investigation. Both of those phones identified a phone number which had sent "bulk messages" advertising the sale of cocaine and cannabis. A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday heard police were able to attribute the phone number to Beer after it was used to make taxi bookings in his name and to the defendant's address. On January 6, the defendant's girlfriend's phone was seized by police and that device contained messages between August 31 and October 24, 2024, and the drugs line number was saved under two love heart emojis. The next day, officers attended Beer's address where he was arrested. A number of items were seized including £235 in cash, two phones, cannabis wrapped in tin foil, weighing scales, bags containing zip lock bags, and a roll of cling film. The defendant was interviewed but answered "no comment". Beer, of Whitaker Road, Splott, later pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A and B drugs. The court heard he has one previous conviction for two unrelated offences. Prosecutor Emma Meadows said the defendant had played a "significant role" in the drugs enterprise. In mitigation, Zoe Laugharne said her client was a user of drugs and began dealing in order to fund his own habit, as a coping mechanism to "deal with his background". Sentencing, Judge Shomon Khan said: "You supplied class A drugs for financial gain... You were running a drugs line and supplied drugs over a period of time, sending out bulk messages. "You clearly had a significant role. You have to recognise the harm drugs and drug supply cause to communities and those who use drugs." Beer was sentenced to a total of two years and four months imprisonment.

Student calls hospital worker 'Welsh c***' then asks 'how is that racist?'
A student called a hospital security guard a "f***ing Welsh c***" then argued the remark was not racist. But Layla Ahmed would later admit her outburst at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales was racially abusive. The 20-year-old psychology student had attended the Heath hospital on December 8 last year with her sister, who "was having seizures", defence solicitor Amelia Butt told Cardiff Magistrates' Court. "This can be seen in footage where she is seen to be having a seizure on the floor in the background," Ms Butt added. "Miss Ahmed was frustrated at staff not being able to treat her sister and she accepts she made comments solely out of desperation in the heat of the moment." READ MORE: Crooked finance manager who stole £140,000 from employers to pay back £72,000 READ MORE: Exact time to spot the Perseid meteor shower from the UK tomorrow Prosecutor Nicholas Evans said the defendant became aggressive and was asked to leave by a security guard. Ahmed then said to the security guard: "You f***ing Welsh c***." When he asked her to stop using racist language she replied: "How is that racist? You're white. You're Welsh." The student, of Catherine Street in Cathays, pleaded guilty to racially-aggravated harassment. Ms Butt said her client had been worried about what would happen to her sister. "She is remorseful," the solicitor told the court. "She accepts she should not have said what she said. She is 20 years old and has never been arrested before or since." Ahmed receives a student loan of £3,400 every four months and has been working part-time as a support worker earning around £100 per week. "I don't agree it was a substantial disturbance," said Ms Butt. "It was not a situation where other intervention or additional assistance was required." Passing sentence District Judge Rhys Williams said: "You were frustrated by the situation. You were asked to leave by the security guard and you used abusive language towards him. "That language included a racial element and it was directed at a security guard who was only doing his job in that situation." The judge imposed a £120 fine, £50 compensation to the victim, £85 in prosecution costs, and a £48 victim services surcharge. Ahmed must pay at a rate of at least £20 per month.

British prison officer admits to inappropriate months-long relationship with inmate
A British prison officer could be headed for her own cell after recently fessing up to a month-long inappropriate relationship with an inmate, according to a report. Megan Breen, 23, made the shocking admission in a Welsh court, becoming the latest of more than a dozen UK prison workers charged with similar conduct in recent years, the Telegraph reported. Breen initially denied the allegations before owning up to the affair, while the prisoner involved remains unnamed. Advertisement Megan Breen admitted to the inappropriate relationship after initially denying the affair Exactly what happened between Breen and the inmate remains unclear. But their relationship was carried out between February and May 2022, while Breen was working at two South Wales prisons — HMP Usk and HMP Prescoed. Advertisement Prescoed is a minimum security prison, according to the Telegraph, while Usk is a tighter security facility that houses the likes of sex offenders. It also remains unclear which prison the relationship happened at. 'While acting as a public officer, namely a prison officer, willfully and without reasonable excuse or justification, [you] misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder by having a relationship with a prisoner,' Breen's charges read. Breen could face prison time after owning up to the affair with an inmate at a prison where she worked. Advertisement She was released on bail until her sentencing next month. 'All sentencing options' are on the table, Judge Carl Harrison ahead of her release. Exactly how much time she faces remains unclear, but people convicted of misconduct in a public office in the UK can be sentenced to life in prison. Advertisement Breen is only the latest UK prison worker to be caught canoodling with an inmate in the past few years. At least 19 prison staffers were charged with inappropriate conduct between 2023 and 2024, according to the UK Ministry of Justice. Some of their sentences — for charges including having sex with inmates, or transferring money on an inmate's behalf — were 12 to 21 month prison terms, the Mirror reported.
