Great Dane found severely malnourished in Sharpsville; owner facing charges

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. (WKBN) — A Sharpsville woman is facing charges after a Great Dane was found severely malnourished on her property.
According to a criminal complaint, animal agents responded to the 300 block of West Main Street on March 25 for reports of an emaciated dog.
Agents found a Great Dane of about two years old that weighed only 49 pounds. Reports state a Great Dane of this age should weigh between 100 to 120 pounds.
The owner, Kendall Shellhorn, 34, said she had the dog since December and did not know why the dog was in this condition, reports said.
The female dog had multiple sores that agents said would be from lying in a crate for long periods. Shellhorn told agents that she kept the dog in a metal crate because she was aggressive, the complaint stated.
Another dog was found with five new puppies. Human agents tell First News they will be removed from the property on Wednesday.
Agents were able to get ownership of the Great Dane, who was evaluated by a veterinarian. Reports state the dog's bloodwork did not indicate any illness and that the dog was severely underweight due to 'pure neglect.'
Shellhorn was arraigned on Tuesday for charges of animal neglect, aggravated cruelty to animals — a third-degree felony– and disorderly conduct. Her bail was set at $15,000. She is due back in court on April 23.
