HC refuses relief to Jai Bhim Nagar residents, allows demolition
Meena Govind Limbole and 23 others, who filed the petition on Monday, stated that they have fallen victim to the brutal power of the State administration, consisting of police personnel and BMC officials, who formed 'a deadly combination' at the behest of a local builder/developer. More than 800 families were ousted in June last year in an allegedly high-handed, illegal, and inhuman action of demolition of houses in which they had been living for more than two decades. 'In the operation, 800 huts housing over 3000 people were thrown out of their homes after the police and BMC personnel entered their premises and assaulted them brutally,' it said. The petitioners alleged that the Powai police and BMC officials not only beat up the slum dwellers but also falsely implicated them in criminal offences under the Maharashtra Police Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
Earlier in June, Tivoli Cooperative Housing Society and Evita Cooperative Housing Society approached the high court seeking the removal of encroachments by hutment dwellers in Jai Bhim Nagar on the footpath that faces the society. They said it caused them immense nuisance and posed a traffic hazard. Their petition stated that a dispute between the residents of Jai Bhim Nagar and the concerned builder over the June 2024 demolition of huts in Jai Bhim Nagar led the residents to occupy the footpath, making it impossible for pedestrians to walk there. It has also caused traffic congestion and made the area accident-prone, stated the petition by the CHS.
The petition by the CHS further alleged that the concerned authorities have not taken appropriate steps to shift the hutment dwellers to suitable places by removing encroachment on the footpath yet. Authorities have ignored cooking activities that led to fire in the past, alleged the petition. As residents wash their clothes and utensils on the footpath, it has made the area unhygienic and increases risks of a disease outbreak, it added. 'This omission on the part of the office of the concerned authorities is completely illegal, and affecting the lives of residents of the Petitioners and other societies too,' the petition stated.
Consequently, on July 7, 2025, the high court observed that the neatly built pavement in Powai was 'completely encroached' by tin and plastic sheds used not only for shelter but for daily activities such as cooking, selling food, and drying clothes. 'When large public expenditure is incurred in creating such infrastructure… the Municipal Corporation and its officers simply turn a blind eye,' noted the division bench of justice GS Kulkarni and justice Arif Doctor.
The court on Monday directed the municipal corporation to form a special cell consisting of an additional commissioner and two senior officers to group wards and survey all encroached footpaths in Mumbai. Following this, the cell would take out eviction action against the encroachers.
Following the order, the civic body informed the court that it intends to demolish the slum colony with police assistance on Monday. Advocate Rakesh Singh, who is representing the residents, said BMC officials had not reached the spot on Monday evening.

B.Tech student's death: Police files abetment FIR against Sharda University
An FIR has been registered against the Sharda University administration after the father of a BTech student, who recently committed suicide in his hostel room, filed a complaint alleging abetment, police said on Tuesday. A 24-year-old BTech Computer Science student of Sharda University was found dead by hanging inside his room at the HNR hostel.(Sunil Ghosh/Hindustan Times) In his complaint, the student's father alleged that the university administration did not inform the family when his son had been missing classes. A 24-year-old BTech Computer Science student of the university was found dead by hanging inside his room at the HNR hostel on Friday night. The student, a resident of Purnia in Bihar's Madhubani district, was the lone son of his father, a private company employee, and mother, a housewife. He had left a suicide note, which said he was unable to bear the pressure of studies, that he was responsible for his death and no one else is to be blamed for it. The note asked the police not to detain anyone and requested the university to refund unused fees to his parents. "My son was studying BTech in Sharda University and has been living in the HNR boys' hostel. He has not gone to college since August 2023," the father said in his complaint filed at Knowledge Park police station on Sunday. The complaint mentioned that the student had backlogs in various subjects. "The college was continuously charging fees from us. We used to get e-mails and messages regarding fees from the college, but it never informed us that Shivam was not attending the classes," the complaint said. Earlier, a university spokesperson had said that the student was enrolled in the BTech programme in 2022 and completed his first year, but struggled in the second year and failed to meet the minimum grade requirement of 5.0 CGPA to progress to the third year. "His mentor remained in touch to support him and encouraged him to participate in internships and other academic programmes," the spokesperson had said. The student was also given opportunity to improve his performance, and offered a chance to repeat the second year at reduced fees if could not, he had said. The university had expressed condolences to the student's family and confirmed that fees would be refunded and all necessary support would be given to the family in future. The family members had claimed that the student returned to college on August 2 after a religious tour to Vaishno Devi with them. He was normal at home and had not shown any sign of distress. On July 18, another second-year student from the Dental Sciences stream in the university had ended life in her hostel room. She had blamed two faculty members for her death and they were arrested.

Elvish Yadav's Gurugram residence under Police watch after firing incident; Patrolling intensified in area: Report
It's been two days since a firing incident was reported outside Big Boss OTT winner Elvish Yadav's residence in Gurugram, Haryana. Amid this, reportedly, the Gurugram police have beefed up security at the YouTuber's Sector 57 residence. Recently, three motorcycle-borne people with fun allegedly fired over two dozen rounds outside his home on Sunday morning. According to a report of Hindustan Times, a team of four armed personnel has been stationed at the house round the clock in shifts, while area patrolling has also been intensified. 'The deployment will remain in place until further orders. The incident is being probed from multiple angles, including the possibility of extortion by gangsters,' said Sandeep Kumar, spokesperson for Gurugram police, told the portal. He also said that officials are also probing the credentials of an Instagram post in which the Bhau gang claimed responsibility for the gunfire incident. It is alleged that Yadav promoted betting apps that financially ruined several families, which caused the incident. 'We are investigating to ascertain who had posted it and from which location,' also quoted the report. Police said senior officials believe the post may have been an attempt to mislead the investigation. Reportedly, more than 10 teams from the Haryana Police Special Task Force (STF), crime branch, and district police have been deployed to trace the suspects involved in the firing incident at Elvish Yadav's residence. It is claimed that the teams are conducting raids across Haryana as well as in neighbouring Rajasthan and Delhi after the incident. If the report is true, the Police also looked into possible connections with the July 14 attack on Yadav's friend, Haryanvi singer Rahul Yadav, alias Fazilpuria, which was reportedly linked to a ₹ 5-crore financial dispute with gangster Sunil Sardhaniya. However, no link between the two matters has been found, as per the report. Following the incident, Elvish Yadav took to his social media handles and shared that he and his family are safe. He thanked people for their concern and said, "I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for your good wishes. My family and I are safe and well. Your kind thoughts and concern are truly appreciated. Thank You." Reacting to the open firing news, Bigg Boss 13 fame Shefali Bagga expressed her shock on Instagram. She called the event "shocking," and questioned the role of the police and security authorities. "I am shocked beyond words at what has happened. And now, where is the police? Where is the security, the media, the authorities for support? These types of firings keep happening in our city, and we talk about freedom and security? Stay strong, Elvish," she wrote.
