A Tunisian extremist is imprisoned for life for killing 3 people in a French basilica in 2020
A Tunisian national was sentenced late Wednesday to life imprisonment without parole, France's most severe sentence possible, over the killing of three people in a basilica in the French Riviera city of Nice in 2020, one of multiple attacks that year linked to Islamic extremism.
Brahim Aouissaoui, 25, was charged with terrorist murder and attempted terrorist murder. He admitted responsibility for the attack during the trial in Paris, even though he had said he couldn't remember anything since then. He explained that he wanted to avenge Muslims killed around the world by Western nations.
On Oct. 29, 2020, Aouissaoui killed worshippers Nadine Vincent, 60, and Simone Barreto, a 44-year-old French-Brazilian woman, and church worker Vincent Loquès, 55. Police officers fired at him as he lunged at them, shouting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is great) and wielding a knife. He was shot and seriously wounded.
The attack was the third in less than two months that French authorities attributed to Islamic extremists, and prompted the government to raise its security alert to the maximum level. It came while France was holding a trial over the 2015 attacks on satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which published caricatures of Islam's prophet. France at the time faced anger from many Muslims around the world for defending the cartoons and for its policies against Islamic radicalism.
France remains on high alert today, notably for domestic extremist threats stoked on online platforms.

'My heart broke for the many innocent people and their families that were killed, tortured, r@ped and kidnapped. The fact that hostages are still held is utterly appalling. 'My intention was to mock and point the finger of shame at the behaviour of the cruel leaders on ALL sides of this atrocious war, who have continued to behave like the worst, dangerous, sickening bullies and seem to relish the tyrannical and childish oneupmanship of the violence. THEY were my target, but clearly I failed to do that, and that's on me. I apologise unreservedly. I'm particularly sorry that my disgust at Hamas didn't figure. It appeared one-sided, and that is wrong. 'I am a person, who like many others, is feeling increasingly helpless and hopeless as we witness the carnage and destruction worsen. The images of starving and wounded children have haunted me day and night. History has taught us never to stand by and allow this kind of inhumane violence to be wrought on anyone, especially innocent children. ‘Every day has tears': Belfast mum of Nóra Quoirin describes her heartbreak almost six years after daughter's death
Nóra Quoirin, who would have turned 21 last week, vanished from her room at the Dusun rainforest resort in 2019. Her body was found nine days after she went missing. An inquest initially recorded her death was by misadventure, but her mother Meabh has always believed her child was abducted. A second inquest returned an open verdict, with the judge agreeing with the family that Nóra could not have made her way through the jungle on her own. In a new interview with The Irish Times, Meabh said she does not believe anyone will ever be brought to justice for Nóra's death. 'The judge did say it was highly probable Nóra had been abducted and led there by someone else, but of course we just don't have proof of that, and I don't think we'll ever have answers,' she said. She added: 'I have zero faith in Malaysia ever paying attention to Nóra's case again. 'In the end, I try not to carry any anger. I don't think I do carry any anger.' Nora lived in London and was the daughter of French-Irish parents Sebastien and Meabh, who is from Belfast. The 15-year-old was born with holoprosencephaly, which affects brain development, and was described by her family as 'vulnerable'. When she disappeared from her hotel room her parents raised fears she had been taken. However, police in Malaysia said they found no evidence of abduction or kidnapping. A post-mortem examination revealed Nóra died from internal bleeding probably caused by hunger and stress. Her funeral took place in Belfast, and she is buried in Milltown Cemetery. Meabh told The Irish Times she still has photographs of her daughter on her walls. 'I can't bring myself to take any of them off the wall,' she added. 'So I just go around the house looking at them and talking to her and laughing about the stupid stuff she would laugh at and crying. Every day has tears.' Meabh marked what would have been Nora's 21st birthday with a trip to Hillsborough Forest Park. 'We went to Hillsborough for a picnic, with her [favourite] chocolate cake, and there were purple rhododendrons and purple flowers absolutely everywhere, and it was almost like this display had been put on for her birthday,' she added. 'She might not be standing physically beside me, but my universe is still filled with Nóra, constantly.'

Boy, 12, slipped in puddle before falling off cliff to his death, inquest told
Chinese tourist Zhihan Zhao, 12, tragically slipped in a puddle and fell to his death at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, a witness told an inquest A 12-year-old boy slipped in a puddle and lost his balance by the edge of a cliff before he plunged to his death, an inquest has heard. French tourist Marion Tourgon described the moment young Zhihan Zhao accidentally died at the Cliffs of Moher in western Ireland, on July 23, 2024. The 12-year-old had set out on a walk with his mum, Xianhong Huang, and friends on the Cliffs of Moher trail but the stroll turned fatal at around 1.45pm. The Chinese nationals had only arrived to Ireland 12 days before the tragic incident, and were visiting one of the country's most popular attractions. The mum said her son was walking ahead of her on the trail when she lost sight of him. She told how they started walking from the Nagle's car park in Liscannor, and said: "My son walked very fast and was ahead of us by 50 metres. As there was only one path I thought we would meet him along the way. When I didn't I walked to the visitor centre and I checked the visitor centre." When she couldn't find him the mum walked back along the path then reported her boy missing. Speaking through an interpreter at the inquest in Kildare, Huang cried and asked: "What exactly caused Zhihan to fall from the Cliffs?" Tourgon told the inquest she had been at the edge of the cliffs at 1.45pm with her husband and two children taking a selfie, the Irish Mirror reports. The French tourist said she saw a young Asian boy come into her eyeline while they were taking the picture and recalled what she saw next. She said: "I saw him slipping in the puddle that appears in the photo that my husband sent to the police. His right foot slipped into the puddle with him trying to stop himself from falling with his left foot but his left foot ended up in the air. "It was very quick - he found himself in an awkward position with his left foot in a void over the cliff and his right knee on the edge of the cliff. His right knee eventually fell into the void over the cliff and he was trying to grasp the grass with his hands to pull himself up. He didn't shout and there was no noise." Tourgon said she alerted the emergency services by phone and added that "it is only the few of us who saw him falling". Heartbroken Huang asked "did he slip?", and Insp Helen Costello replied: "It appears from the witness that he slipped into the void having stumbled in the puddle." Police officer Colm Collins said he received a call that day at 2pm to attend the Cliffs of Moher after a male was seen falling off. He added that the Irish Coastguard had spotted a body floating in the water at the bottom of the cliffs. Collins said a lifeboat was sent but the craft was not able to access the site where the body was spotted due to the sea conditions. Zhihan's body was recovered by a fisherman five days later around 10am on July 28. O'Dea said the post mortem found that Zhihan died from multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a height and said her verdict was an "accidental death". She said: "It is clear from evidence we heard that Zhihan slipped off the Cliffs rather than any other way. His death would have been very quick - instantaneous." O'Dea told Ms Huang: "I can't imagine how upsetting this is for you" and the two embraced as Ms Huang left the coroner's court in Kilrush. She added: "The pain must be immeasurable for you all."
