Chinese tourist Zhihan Zhao, 12, tragically slipped in a puddle and fell to his death at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, a witness told an inquest
A 12-year-old boy slipped in a puddle and lost his balance by the edge of a cliff before he plunged to his death, an inquest has heard.
French tourist Marion Tourgon described the moment young Zhihan Zhao accidentally died at the Cliffs of Moher in western Ireland, on July 23, 2024. The 12-year-old had set out on a walk with his mum, Xianhong Huang, and friends on the Cliffs of Moher trail but the stroll turned fatal at around 1.45pm. The Chinese nationals had only arrived to Ireland 12 days before the tragic incident, and were visiting one of the country's most popular attractions.

The mum said her son was walking ahead of her on the trail when she lost sight of him. She told how they started walking from the Nagle's car park in Liscannor, and said: "My son walked very fast and was ahead of us by 50 metres. As there was only one path I thought we would meet him along the way. When I didn't I walked to the visitor centre and I checked the visitor centre."

When she couldn't find him the mum walked back along the path then reported her boy missing. Speaking through an interpreter at the inquest in Kildare, Huang cried and asked: "What exactly caused Zhihan to fall from the Cliffs?"
Tourgon told the inquest she had been at the edge of the cliffs at 1.45pm with her husband and two children taking a selfie, the Irish Mirror reports. The French tourist said she saw a young Asian boy come into her eyeline while they were taking the picture and recalled what she saw next.
She said: "I saw him slipping in the puddle that appears in the photo that my husband sent to the police. His right foot slipped into the puddle with him trying to stop himself from falling with his left foot but his left foot ended up in the air.
"It was very quick - he found himself in an awkward position with his left foot in a void over the cliff and his right knee on the edge of the cliff. His right knee eventually fell into the void over the cliff and he was trying to grasp the grass with his hands to pull himself up. He didn't shout and there was no noise."
Tourgon said she alerted the emergency services by phone and added that "it is only the few of us who saw him falling". Heartbroken Huang asked "did he slip?", and Insp Helen Costello replied: "It appears from the witness that he slipped into the void having stumbled in the puddle."

Police officer Colm Collins said he received a call that day at 2pm to attend the Cliffs of Moher after a male was seen falling off. He added that the Irish Coastguard had spotted a body floating in the water at the bottom of the cliffs.
Collins said a lifeboat was sent but the craft was not able to access the site where the body was spotted due to the sea conditions. Zhihan's body was recovered by a fisherman five days later around 10am on July 28.
O'Dea said the post mortem found that Zhihan died from multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a height and said her verdict was an "accidental death".
She said: "It is clear from evidence we heard that Zhihan slipped off the Cliffs rather than any other way. His death would have been very quick - instantaneous." O'Dea told Ms Huang: "I can't imagine how upsetting this is for you" and the two embraced as Ms Huang left the coroner's court in Kilrush. She added: "The pain must be immeasurable for you all."

Panicking horse crashes head-first into car during nightmare funeral procession

Shocking footage of an Irish funeral procession shows the moment a horse and cart broke free. Out of control, the horse ran through a red light and went head first into a car Dublin: Moment horse crashes into car during funeral procession Horrifying footage shows the moment a horse and cart broke away from a funeral procession and smashed head-first into a car. ‌ In one clip, a cart being pulled by horses can be seen next to a horse and carriage hearse during a procession in Clondalkin, a suburban village west of Dublin. As a number of vehicles including a bus pass on the opposite side of the road, two people can be seen galloping along the green verge of the road at speed. ‌ Then, one of the carts being towed by a horse appears to pick up speed. It comes after a woman vanished in car crash - then turns up months later with wild story. ‌ READ MORE: Mindless yobs damage 41 cars in vandalism rampage through sleepy market town A person on the cart could be heard shouting 'no' to try and direct traffic away, before running a red light and smashing into a car. The driver can be heard shouting ''f*****g hell' in the immediate aftermath of the shocking August 11 incident. A second video showed the horse with a swelling face and head and with stitches. A person in the video is heard saying: 'He has a good chance of healing there now if you mind him.' ‌ Since the incident, a leading animal rescue charity has called for an investigation. My Lovely Horse Animal Rescue called what happened 'lawlessness and cruelty'. The charity is now calling for a police-led Animal Welfare Crime Unit; increased and sustained funds for rescues and modern, enforceable laws to protect animals and the public, the Irish Mirror reported. ‌ 'On Monday in Clondalkin, a funeral procession of a road traffic victim became chaotic,' the spokesperson said. 'Horses galloping along footpaths, sulkies and traps weaving through traffic. Then, the crash. A terrified horse ran into moving vehicles. Left bleeding, with a deep cut across its head, lying on the tarmac as gardaí arrived. 'This is the reality. Road Traffic Act breaches – no regulation, no insurance, no roadworthiness. Public safety is ignored – pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers put at serious risk. 'Animal welfare – exhausted, terrified animals, injured in plain sight. This is not 'tradition. This is lawlessness and cruelty,' the charity's spokesperson said. The charity is now calling for a Garda-led Animal Welfare Crime Unit empowered to investigate and act. 'Increased, sustained funding for rescues – because we're the ones picking up the pieces. Modern, enforceable laws – to protect animals and the public. 'See something. Say something. Animal cruelty is a crime,' the spokesperson said, encouraging the public to sign their petition to demand urgent action.

Man admits trying to smuggle 850 protected turtles worth £1 million to Hong Kong

A New York resident has admitted he tried to smuggle protected turtles worth more than one million US dollars from the US to Hong Kong by shipping them in boxes labelled 'plastic animal toys'. Wei Qiang Lin, a Chinese national who lives in Brooklyn, pleaded guilty in federal court in New York on Monday to attempting to export more than 220 parcels containing around 850 eastern box turtles and three-toed box turtles, according to the US justice department. The turtles, with an estimated market value of 1.4 million dollars (£1 million), were intercepted by law enforcement at a border inspection, prosecutors said. Officers saw them bound and taped inside knotted socks within the shipping boxes. Eastern box turtles and three-toed box turtles feature colourful markings and are a 'prized feature' in the domestic and foreign pet market, particularly in China and Hong Kong, prosecutors said. The reptiles are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Lin also shipped 11 other parcels filled with reptiles, including venomous snakes, prosecutors said. He faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced on December 23.

50,000 migrants have crossed Channel on small boats since Labour took power

Home Office figures show 474 migrants arrived by small boat on Monday alone, which brings recorded arrivals to 50,271 since the election on July 4 2024. Labour former home secretary Baroness Smith of Malvern had said earlier on Tuesday that reaching the milestone is 'unacceptable'. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said Labour's promise to 'smash the criminal boat gangs' in its manifesto last year was 'just a slogan', with crossings now 'so much worse' than they were before the vote. There have been 27,029 arrivals so far this year, which is 47% higher than at the same point of 2024 when the figure stood at 18,342, and 67% higher than at the same time in 2023 (16,170). Baroness Smith, who is now an education and women and equalities minister, warned: 'Criminal gangs have got an absolute foothold in the tragic trafficking of people across the Channel.' She told BBC Breakfast: 'It is an unacceptable number of people.' The minister also told Times Radio: 'We have taken a lot of important action already, but what we're facing is a criminal endeavour which has got long roots into the ground, I'm afraid, because it hasn't been tackled by the last government over recent years. 'That's why we need the action we've already taken to increase the speed with which we make asylum decisions, to remove more people from this country, the groundbreaking deal that we now have with the French, and we've already detained people who've come to the country.' Earlier this month, the Government began detaining migrants under a new 'one in, one out' deal with France. UK officials aim to make referrals for returns to France within three days of a migrant's arrival by small boat, while French authorities will respond within 14 days. An approved asylum seeker in France will be brought to the UK under a safe route as part of the exchange. Speaking on the Isle of Wight, Mrs Badenoch said: 'Labour's plan to smash the gangs was just a slogan. Things are so much worse since Labour came into office, they have no plans. 'Their one in, one out scheme isn't going to work, and what we're seeing is a lot of local communities having to pay the price and bear the brunt of the Government's incompetence.' Asked if the Conservatives could reduce the number of crossings from five figures to zero, Mrs Badenoch replied that 'it wouldn't happen straight away, but it would happen quickly'. Mrs Badenoch said: 'My team are now looking at what we can do in terms of detention centres, but stopping people from coming here in the first place – if they think they're going to be sent to Rwanda and not get here, get a free hotel, get benefits, then they won't come here.' Reacting to the milestone being reached, Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: 'Labour has surrendered our borders, and the consequences are being felt in our communities, from rising crime to shocking cases of rape and sexual assault by recent arrivals.' He accused the Government of having 'scrapped Conservative deterrents and created the conditions for chaos' and added: 'This is an invasion Labour are too cowardly to confront.' Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer entered No 10 on July 5 last year, having secured a Labour victory with 412 Commons seats, ending 14 years in government for the Conservatives, who won 121.
