Despite tech-driven policing, shootings continue unabated

Patna: In a city where police vehicles boast GPS trackers and crime-mapping apps are touted as cutting-edge deterrents, the sound of gunfire continues to ring out in Patna's streets.
Over the past three days alone, eight people have been shot within a 20-km radius – five fatally – raising serious questions about the real impact of tech-driven policing on the ground.

is wavering. Despite regular patrols and digital monitoring, no arrests have been made in connection with these recent crimes. Locals are left wondering: are high-tech claims simply cosmetic while criminals roam free?
Among the victims is 40-year-old Mohammad Nanhe, who was shot in the thigh on May 17 after refusing to sell smack.
He remains in a critical condition at Nalanda Medical College Hospital. In another chilling incident, Sanjay Kumar, 50, a community hall owner, was shot at during his early morning walk in Tej Pratap Nagar under Beur police station. He is now undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Patna.
On May 18, an e-rickshaw driver was gunned down following a dispute in the Chowk police station area of Patna City. He is currently receiving care at PMCH.

While the violence has left citizens shaken, Patna Police maintain that operations are on to nab the culprits. Officers claim that all patrol vehicles in urban areas are GPS-enabled, allowing senior officials to track their movement in real time and reduce response times.
City SP (Central), Sweety Sehrawat, said, "Special drives are being carried out at the police headquarters level and City SPs level, against illegal firearms and illicit liquor.
We focus according to the crimes that are being carried out in different areas. City SPs review and analyse the crimes every 15 days, while the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) reviews them every month."
She added that those recently released on bail are under particular scrutiny. "A dossier of such criminals is prepared, which contains information related to their crime and criminal history. The police will strengthen the case with evidence to ensure their jail term is extended," Sehrawat said.
In addition to crime-specific drives, including the Roko-Toko vehicle checking campaign and anti-liquor operations, the police claim to be conducting regular raids and searches in high-risk zones.
To further tighten surveillance, plans are underway to equip patrol vehicles in rural areas with GPS as well. "The patrolling vehicles in the urban areas are equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) for their real-time monitoring so that the response time could be cut short," Sehrawat said.
The SSP has recently toured several of the crime-hit locations, including Patna City, Phulwarisharif and Bihta. According to Sehrawat, many of the recent shootings were concentrated in the Patna Sadar zone while Patna Central continues to be notorious for chain-snatching cases.

The president has, however, consistently broken new ground with his bellicose rhetoric towards his political opponents, who he routinely calls "sick" and "evil," and has talked repeatedly about how violence is needed to quell protests. The Minnesota attack occurred after Trump took the extraordinary step of mobilizing the military to try to control protests against his administration's immigration operations in Los Angeles during the past week, when he pledged to "HIT" disrespectful protesters and warned of a "migrant invasion" of the city. Dallek said Trump has been "both a victim and an accelerant" of the charged, dehumanizing political rhetoric that is flooding the country. "It feels as if the extremists are in the saddle," he said, "and the extremists are the ones driving our rhetoric and politics."

The decision suggested that the scale of President Donald Trump's mass deportation campaign - an issue that is at the heart of his presidency - is hurting industries and constituencies that he does not want to lose. The new guidance comes after protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration's immigration raids, including at farms and businesses. It also came as Trump made a rare concession this week that his crackdown was hurting American farmers and hospitality businesses.
