Woman cop dies, 2 injured as SUV rams them during patrol in Patna

A Scorpio SUV ran over three police personnel during a late-night routine vehicle-checking operation in Bihar's Patna in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, injuring a woman constable and two inspectors. However, the woman constable succumbed to her injuries this incident took place on Atal Path near the Srikrishna Puri locality in Patna. While the driver managed to flee the spot, police took two passengers from the vehicle into custody. Following the incident, senior police officials rushed to the scene while the injured officers were taken to a private security personnel posted with Srikrishna Puri police station were checking vehicles on the Atal Path, when the incident happened. While they were checking a car, another speeding car hit it from the rear end, resulting in injuries to the three personnel. The driver of the speeding car managed to flee immediately after the accident," senior Patna Police official Awkash Kumar told news agency PTI. The other two injured officers are reportedly in a stable the incident has sparked a row, with Opposition leaders in the state questioning the law and order situation in the driver still at large, RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari said, "While the police were conducting vehicle checks in Patna, a car ran over the officers. A woman police personnel has died. What is happening in Patna? The driver is still absconding. It's like a reign of crime has taken over. Even uniformed police officers are no longer safe. This is the state of affairs in Bihar."advertisement"On the other hand, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav blamed the increasing criminalisation of politics and held the people of Bihar responsible for voting 'criminals into power.'""Society itself does not want crime to end. When the public votes for criminals during elections, then crime is bound to happen. Bihar cannot function without crime or the mafia—no caste or political party can survive without the mafia. People of every caste consider their criminals as leaders, which is why crime is not even an issue for the public in Bihar. It is the public that votes criminals into power. So not just the government, we hold the public equally responsible for the law and order situation."Inputs from Sujeet Gupta and PTI

City witnesses surge in criminal activities

Patna: State capital has witnessed a surge in criminal activities despite the deployment of a robust police force, over 3,000 CCTV cameras, and hundreds of Dial-112 teams. The rise in crime in the past five months has been significant, despite the fact that the city has a ratio of one senior police officer for every two police stations. According to figures shared by Patna Police, the city registered 116 murders, 48 robberies, 36 rape cases, 10 dacoities, and 33 snatching incidents, excluding cellphone thefts, from Jan to May. Additionally, 13 cases of extortion were reported, they added. However, Patna Police claims decline in crime incidents, adding that prompt action is being taken against the criminals. It said 14,962 arrests were made between Jan and May this year. According to the police, the crime rate also declined this year compared to 2024. The decline in crime is attributed to increased patrolling and stepped police vigilance across the city. Patna SSP, Avkash Kumar, said, "Compared to 2024, this year there has been a decrease of 18.31% in murders, 33.33% in robberies, 42.86% in loot, and 49.30% in rape cases. In comparison to 2024, there has also been a decrease of 21.43% in theft, 51.85% in robbery, and 18.23% in burglary incidents this year." He said in most of the murder cases, the matter is either related to land disputes or illicit affairs. The SHOs have been directed to gather information about land disputes from the chowkidars deployed in their areas concerned. Then the SHOs are asked to hold meetings with the circle officers to resolve the disputes. "If any cognisable crime like murder, dacoity, or rape occurs, the police immediately seek court permissions for property attachments of the absconding accused. A total of 33 police stations, identified in the vulnerable areas of the district, have been provided bike-patrolling units to review the security arrangements in the banks, jewellery shops, customer service points and market areas. Equipped with GPS and wireless sets, four such bike patrolling units deployed in each station work round-the-clock," the SSP added. According to the figures shared by Patna Police, East Patna witnessed the highest number of vehicle thefts with 681 cases, while West Patna reported 66 house break-ins from Jan to May. The crime statistics for East Patna also include 14 robberies, three dacoities, and 66 burglaries. Central Patna registered 396 vehicle theft cases, 29 burglaries, and three robberies. Western Patna reported 253 vehicle thefts, 78 burglaries, six robberies, and three dacoities. Rural Patna recorded comparatively lower numbers with 86 vehicle thefts, 47 burglaries, eight robberies, and one dacoity. Chain snatching has emerged as a concern, with criminals on motorcycles targeting pedestrians in various areas including Gandhi Maidan, Boring Road, Atal Path, Ganga Path, Kankarbagh, and Gola Road, said the figures. In April and May alone, motorcycle-borne criminals snatched gold chains from 12 women and two men. Feb and March witnessed six and 10 chain-snatching incidents respectively.

Despite tech-driven policing, shootings continue unabated

1 2 Patna: In a city where police vehicles boast GPS trackers and crime-mapping apps are touted as cutting-edge deterrents, the sound of gunfire continues to ring out in Patna's streets. Over the past three days alone, eight people have been shot within a 20-km radius – five fatally – raising serious questions about the real impact of tech-driven policing on the ground. As three other victims battle for their lives in hospital, public confidence in Patna Police is wavering. Despite regular patrols and digital monitoring, no arrests have been made in connection with these recent crimes. Locals are left wondering: are high-tech claims simply cosmetic while criminals roam free? Among the victims is 40-year-old Mohammad Nanhe, who was shot in the thigh on May 17 after refusing to sell smack. He remains in a critical condition at Nalanda Medical College Hospital. In another chilling incident, Sanjay Kumar, 50, a community hall owner, was shot at during his early morning walk in Tej Pratap Nagar under Beur police station. He is now undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Patna. On May 18, an e-rickshaw driver was gunned down following a dispute in the Chowk police station area of Patna City. He is currently receiving care at PMCH. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [Ativar Agora] - Licença de antivírus para PC Clique aqui Undo While the violence has left citizens shaken, Patna Police maintain that operations are on to nab the culprits. Officers claim that all patrol vehicles in urban areas are GPS-enabled, allowing senior officials to track their movement in real time and reduce response times. City SP (Central), Sweety Sehrawat, said, "Special drives are being carried out at the police headquarters level and City SPs level, against illegal firearms and illicit liquor. We focus according to the crimes that are being carried out in different areas. City SPs review and analyse the crimes every 15 days, while the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) reviews them every month." She added that those recently released on bail are under particular scrutiny. "A dossier of such criminals is prepared, which contains information related to their crime and criminal history. The police will strengthen the case with evidence to ensure their jail term is extended," Sehrawat said. In addition to crime-specific drives, including the Roko-Toko vehicle checking campaign and anti-liquor operations, the police claim to be conducting regular raids and searches in high-risk zones. To further tighten surveillance, plans are underway to equip patrol vehicles in rural areas with GPS as well. "The patrolling vehicles in the urban areas are equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) for their real-time monitoring so that the response time could be cut short," Sehrawat said. The SSP has recently toured several of the crime-hit locations, including Patna City, Phulwarisharif and Bihta. According to Sehrawat, many of the recent shootings were concentrated in the Patna Sadar zone while Patna Central continues to be notorious for chain-snatching cases.
