Kayla Thornton helps Valkyries rout Aces
The Golden State Valkyries didn't play like underdogs on Saturday and Kayla Thornton had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way in a 95-68 victory over the Las Vegas Aces at San Francisco.
Cecilia Zandalasini scored 18 points, Monique Billings added 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while Veronica Burton recorded 14 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds as the Valkyries ended a four-game losing streak.
Leading into Saturday's game, Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase was shocked by her team's lack of energy in their last game, a loss to the Phoenix Mercury, and her team responded in a big way. Golden State pushed the pace from the opening jump and outscored the Aces by 16-0 in the first half on fast-break points and 10 forced turnovers.
Golden State's lead pushed to 49-28 at halftime when Kate Martin took the last shot and hit a deep 3-point attempt which left Las Vegas stunned heading into the halftime locker room. The Valkyries held a 34-15 advantage in the second quarter.
The Valkyries' defense held the visitors to 29 percent shooting from the floor to start the game but the Aces adjusted at halftime and head coach Becky Hammon's side opted to push into the paint to try and get to the free-throw line. It worked on the offensive end of the court and Las Vegas trimmed its deficit to 18 points, but defensively could not stop Golden State.
Las Vegas never had a lead in the game, and was down by as many as 29 points in the third quarter, despite having three-time MVP A'ja Wilson on the roster. The Aces won two WNBA championships over the past three seasons.
Wilson scored 17 points in the defeat, with 16 points by Chelsea Gray, the only two Las Vegas starters to reach double-digit points. First-year Aces guard and WNBA champion Jewell Loyd struggled offensively and went 1-of-6 from the floor with five points.
The win is the first Commissioner's Cup victory in the Valkyries' history and most points scored in a game for Golden State in its eight-game history.

Rookie Lexi Held scores season-high 24 points as Mercury close on 18-1 run to beat Valkyries 86-77
PHOENIX — Rookie Lexi Held scored a season-high 24 points, Satou Sabally had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists and the Phoenix Mercury closed on an 18-1 run to beat the Golden State Valkyries 86-77 on Thursday night. Phoenix trailed 76-68 with 4:04 remaining. Held put the Mercury ahead 77-76 with 1:11 remaining on a deep 3-pointer. After Golden State went 1 for 2 at the free-throw line, Sabally rebounded her own miss and put it in while being fouled. Sabally made the free throw for a three-point play and an 80-77 advantage with 33.3 left. Golden State guard Veronica Burton missed a wide-open layup at the other end and Sabally was fouled before making two free throws for a five-point lead. The Valkyries turned it over on their next two inbound plays, and the Mercury made four straight free throws to seal it. Held was 7 for 15 from the field, including 4 for 9 behind the arc, and 6 for 6 at the free-throw line for the best scoring output by a rookie this season, passing Paige Bueckers' mark of 21. Phoenix improved to 5-1 at home — a franchise best to begin a season. Sami Whitcomb added nine points before fouling out late for Phoenix, which was without starters Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas . Rookie gaurd Megan McConnell has been signed by Phoenix Mercury, on Tuesday. The ex-Duquesne player featured in the franchise's training camp but was released ahead of the season. She bagged three pointso n her debut in a Commissioner's Cup defeat to the Minnesota Lynx. Meanwhile, the Indiana Pacers will have their first NBA Finals game at the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, after they beat New York Knicks in the Wastern Conference finals. Also, TJ McConnell made entry in the game in style, wearing his sister's new No. 16 Mercy jersey. During her high school career, Megan was a start player during four years at Chartiers Valley High School. She was also picked for the Pennsylvania Writers All-State team, and in her junior, senior seasons, she was also class 5A first team all-state. Meanwhile, in her last 57 college games, Chartiers Valley also had a 57-game winning streak, the longest in Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League history.
