Trump administration gutted program aimed at preventing targeted violence

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Trump administration gutted a program that aimed to prevent targeted violence as part of its sweeping bid to downsize the federal government, a move that could come under fresh scrutiny after the deadly shooting of state lawmakers in Minnesota on Saturday.
The Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, works to reduce violent extremism through intervention programs in schools, workplaces and government offices.
William Braniff, a former director of the office who resigned in protest in March, said the office went from having 45 full-time staff and several dozen contract workers to just a handful of employees currently.
The Trump administration has prioritized combating illegal immigration while shrinking other DHS offices, a factor Braniff cited. "DHS is drastically reducing everything that is not related to border and immigration security," he said.
The current head of the office is Thomas Fugate, a 22-year-old former Trump campaign worker who did not appear to have previous experience with countering terrorism and violent attacks, ProPublica reported earlier this month.
DHS and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A gunman posing as a police officer killed a senior Democratic state assemblywoman and her husband on Saturday in an apparent "politically motivated assassination," and wounded a second lawmaker and his spouse, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and law enforcement officials said.

FBI Releases Chilling Photo of Minnesota Suspect Vance Boelter in Rubber Mask

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a chilling new photo of Minnesota shooting suspect Vance Boelter, who authorities believe shot two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses, two fatally. Two news outlets reported that Boelter was wearing a rubber or latex mask. The photo shows Boelter wearing the fake police uniform that authorities earlier described, authorities say; Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said in a press conference that Boelter, 57, was impersonating a police officer and also was driving a police-like SUV with lights when police believe he opened fire. According to ABC, the third photo in the wanted poster released by the FBI shows Boelter as he approached one of the victim's doors. Police believe Boelter shot and killed Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark at their home after shooting and wounding state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. Fox 9 reported that Boelter was wearing an "old man rubber mask" when he knocked on the doors so he didn't "even look like himself." ABC News also reported that Boelter was "wearing a latex mask that looked realistic." Another photo released by the FBI shows Boelter in a cowboy hat. "The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Vance L. Boelter, the suspect in Saturday's targeted shootings of Minnesota lawmakers and their families in Champlin and Brooklyn Park," the FBI wrote. Authorities found his gear in a swamp, including a bullet proof vest, Fox 9 reported. "How he's getting around right now is a mystery," the Fox 9 reporter said on air. He was also seen outside the home of another lawmaker, Fox 9 wrote. His LinkedIn page and website said Boelter was affiliated with a private security firm Praetorian Guard Security Services, as well as a company called Red Lion Group. He was appointed to the Minnesota Governor's Workforce Development Board by Gov. Tim Walz and former Gov. Mark Dayton, press releases and ABC News reported. According to ABC News, "dozens of Minnesota Democrats were on a target list written by the gunman," including Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and state Attorney General Keith Ellison. "The shooter's list of potential targets also included the names of abortion providers and pro-choice activists," ABC News reported. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that 11 Wisconsin Democratic lawmakers were also on the list. They included eight women and three men, all Democrats, the Journal Sentinel Releases Chilling Photo of Minnesota Suspect Vance Boelter in Rubber Mask first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 15, 2025

Calls Mount for Wyndham Clark's Suspension After Alleged U.S. Open Incident

Calls Mount for Wyndham Clark's Suspension After Alleged U.S. Open Incident originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club has put the best golfers in the world to the toughest test this week. It presents next-to-impossible scoring conditions and golf rounds that last well over five hours. Advertisement On Saturday, PGA star Rory McIlroy admitted that he was indifferent about making the cut on Friday afternoon, saying that he wasn't sure he wanted to play two more rounds over the weekend. What Wyndham Clark allegedly did after missing the cut, though, was far worse. According to a report from Tron Carter, Clark vandalized the locker room at the historic Oakmont Country Club after his round on Friday, damaging several of the lockers. Clark shot a four-over 74 in both the first and second round, and his eight-over score missed the cut by one stroke. To make matters worse, Clark bogeyed his final hole of the day to miss the cut. Advertisement While we wait for further reporting on Clark's alleged actions, the blowback on social media has been rather drastic. Here's a look at what fans are saying about the reported outburst from the 2023 U.S. Open champion: "That's a historical locker room too id ban him from ever playing there again tbh," one fan said. "This is unacceptable anywhere. He's a guest of Oakmont. You don't do this ever," another added. "Not even close to acceptable, for a pro or amateur," one fan commented. "He should be suspended. Imagine being a guest at a club and doing that after the round." "He should be suspended," another fan added. "This is ridiculous. The tour and the USGA should make statements strongly condemning the club throwing, profanity, and all the other antics that have become the norm in the professional game." Advertisement Since winning the U.S. Open two years ago at Los Angeles Country Club, Clark has seen his game take a bit of a dip. He won once in 2024 at Pebble Beach, but has not been back into the winner's circle since, placing in the top 10 in just one of the 15 tournaments he's played this season.
