Amid a spate of Bihar killings, Chirag Paswan joins Opposition fireworks against Nitish govt
On Saturday, referring to such killings, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief and Union Minister Chirag Paswan, a key NDA ally, slammed the Nitish government. 'Bihari ab aur kitni hatyaon ki bhet chadhenge? Samajh se pare hai ki Bihar Police ki zimmedari kya hai? (How many more Biharis will fall victim to killings? It's beyond understanding what the responsibility of Bihar Police actually is),' Chirag said in a post on X.
Reacting to Chirag's comments, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav said, 'Jaake Pradhan Mantri ji se bolen ki jungle raj aa gaya hai (He should tell the Prime Minister that jungle rule has taken over in Bihar).'
In the last few days, several killings have been reported from across the state, including two incidents each in state capital Patna and Nalanda, and one in Buxar.
In east Patna's Ramakrishna Nagar, 40-year-old shop owner Vikram Jha was gunned down Friday night, while sand-trader Ramkant Yadav, 50, was shot dead outside his home in west Patna's Rani Bazar area on July 10, police sources said.
A 60-year-old nurse of the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) was allegedly shot dead in the Nalanda district, Nitish's home turf, over a land dispute on Saturday. The same morning, 20 year old Rahul Yadav was shot dead while sleeping beside a borewell in his field in Buxar's Brahmpur police station area.
On Saturday afternoon, a man identified as Ravi Kumar was gunned down over a land dispute in the Nagarnausa police station area in Nalanda, police sources said. On Friday night, 21-year-old Raju Kumar was shot dead in Beldour area in Khagaria.
Following these incidents, Tejashwi took to social media to criticise the Bihar government. After Ramkant Yadav's murder, Tejashwi said in a post on X, 'Businessman shot dead in Patna. Chaotic situation in the state under the leadership of an unconscious Chief Minister! BJP ministers and leaders are busy and engrossed in looting Bihar with criminals and corrupt individuals.'
After Vikram Jha's killing, Tejashwi said, 'Yet another businessman, Vikram Jha, shot dead in Patna! … Who is responsible for the hundreds of murders happening every day? The corrupt 'Bhunja Party' must answer.'
While the Opposition leaders have been regularly attacking the government, it was not the first time Chirag castigated the NDA government over its law and order track record.
On July 7, following the murders of a minor and a 20-year-old woman in Nalanda district, stemming from a scuffle between the children of two neighbouring families, the LJP(RV) chief said the incident was 'unfortunate and condemnable', arguing that such crimes 'demonstrate the complete collapse of law and order in Bihar'. 'This heinous incident not only shakes the conscience of humanity, but also demonstrates that law and order in Bihar has completely collapsed… For such an incident to be carried out by criminals in the home district of the honourable Chief Minister clearly shows the morale of the criminals is at an all-time high,' Chirag had said on X.
But Bihar has since witnessed a spate of violent crimes. On July 8, prominent Patna businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead by a bike-borne assailant while he was in his car outside his residential complex in the posh Gandhi Maidan locality of the state capital.
Khemka's killing drew widespread outrage from the public and Opposition, prompting an urgent review meeting held by the CM with top police officials the following day.
After the meeting, Nitish Kumar had said law and order is the government's 'top priority'. 'Whoever commits a crime will not be spared under any circumstances… The police and administration have been directed to act with full alertness and strictness to maintain law and order,' the CM, who is also the Janata Dal (United) president, said on X.
After Khemka's murder, the state government has been facing a growing chorus of criticism as other violent crimes were reported from different parts of the state.
While Tejashwi has been among the first leaders to react to such incidents in Bihar, Chirag's stance has made some NDA leaders, particularly from the JD(U), uncomfortable.
Amid the ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar, which has sparked a major row, Chirag's criticism has come at a difficult time for Nitish, whose rivals believe his innings at the helm of Bihar was heading into the sunset.
The LJP(RV) chief has been positioning himself to play a larger role in Bihar politics. A senior state BJP leader told The Indian Express that Chirag's focus on the Bihar affairs shows that 'he wants to be the next Nitish Kumar in state politics'.

Choice of govt's VP nominee likely after PM's return from tour, NDA allies in with a chance
AS THE Election Commission announced on Wednesday that it had begun preparations for election of the new Vice President, the government's choice for Jagdeep Dhankhar's replacement will be decided by the BJP Parliamentary Board. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who heads the board, departing on a four-day overseas tour on Wednesday, the meeting will take place only on his return. Top BJP sources said the government's candidate – who is expected to be elected given the BJP-led NDA's numbers in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – will be 'someone with total loyalty'. A senior BJP leader said: 'Although a final decision in this regard will be taken by the senior leadership of the party, discussions around who will replace Dhankhar have centred on him or her being a longstanding member of the NDA.' The leader added: 'There is certainly a possibility of a member from one of the key constituents of the NDA – especially the TDP or JD(U) being chosen.' Such a move would strengthen the ties between the BJP and its allies. A source added pointedly that the vice-presidential election comes at a time when 'a significant reshuffle' is expected in the Union Cabinet, apart from gubernatorial postings and internal polls for the BJP's next national president. According to party insiders, BJP MPs who are heading towards the end of their Rajya Sabha tenures and Ministers of State, apart from party leaders, are likely to be part of these reshuffles. Sources added that while events on Monday in the Rajya Sabha as Dhankhar chaired the House, reportedly related to the Opposition motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, were the immediate trigger, Dhankhar's resignation was 'in the offing for some time'. A senior BJP leader said there were several reasons for this, including, 'but not limited to', his health. A BJP MP who called on Dhankhar on the eve of the start of the Monsoon Session said: 'There are certainly several reasons at play, but his health is definitely a reason for his decision (to resign).' Dhankhar's successor: EC begins preparations to hold vice presidential poll
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Wednesday said it has begun the process of holding the vice presidential election, two days after Jagdeep Dhankhar's surprise resignation from the post. The poll authority said it has started constituting the electoral college comprising MPs of both Houses of Parliament. Both elected and nominated members are eligible to vote in the vice presidential election. It is also finalising the returning officer and assistant returning officers. "On completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the election schedule to the office of the Vice President of India will follow as soon as possible," the EC said. Dhankhar stepped down as vice president on Monday, citing health reasons. His term was to end on August 10, 2027. The Union home ministry on Tuesday formally notified the resignation of Dhankhar from the office of the vice president. According to Clause 2 of Article 68 of the Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of the vice president occurring due to his death, resignation or removal, or otherwise, will be held "as soon as possible" after it goes vacant. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dubai's Next Icon: Experience Binghatti Aquarise Luxury Binghatti Developers FZE Learn More Undo The person elected to fill the vacancy will be entitled to hold office "for the full term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office". From the day the notification is issued, "calling the electoral college to vote", and till the day of the poll, a period of 30 days is stipulated. A person cannot be elected as the vice president unless he is a citizen of India, has completed 35 years of age and is qualified for election as a member of the Rajya Sabha. A person is also not eligible if he holds any office of profit under the government of India or a state government or any subordinate local authority. The ruling NDA has a comfortable edge in the vice presidential elections. The vice president is elected by the members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, where nominated members of the Upper House are also eligible to cast their vote. The 543-member Lok Sabha has one vacant seat -- Basirhat in West Bengal -- while there are five vacancies in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. Of the five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha, four are from Jammu and Kashmir, and one from Punjab. The seat from Punjab was vacated after AAP leader Sanjeev Arora quit following his election to the state assembly in a bypoll last month. The effective strength of both the Houses together is 786 and the winning candidate will require 394 votes, considering that all eligible voters exercise their franchise. In the Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA enjoys the support of 293 of the 542 members. The ruling alliance has the support of 129 members in the Rajya Sabha, assuming that the nominated members vote in support of the NDA nominee, which has an effective strength of 240. The ruling alliance has the support of 422 members. Article 66 (1) of the Constitution provides that the vice presidential election shall be held in accordance with the system of Proportional Representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting at such election shall be by secret ballot. In this system, the elector has to mark preferences against the names of the candidates. The vice president is the second highest constitutional office in the country. He serves for a five-year term, but can continue to be in office, irrespective of the expiry of the term, until the successor assumes office.
