The Israel-Iran conflict is pushing up the costs of chartering oil tankers from the Middle East, as geopolitical fears weigh on markets again.
Tanker rates for vessels carrying refined oil products from the Middle East have surged in the last few days, amid concern that travelling through the Strait of Hormuz is now more risky.
The cost to ship fuels from the Middle East to East Asia climbed almost 20% in three sessions to Monday, according to data from the Baltic Exchange.
Bloomberg, which reported the data, explains:
Benchmark rates for a medium-sized vessel carrying refined oil product from the Middle East to Japan, known as TC1, rose to 136 Worldscale points on Monday from 114 on Thursday. Costs for smaller vessels doing the same route, or TC5, advanced to 167 points, from 139 two sessions prior.
The corresponding level for mid-sized tankers carrying fuels from the Persian Gulf to East Africa, or the TC17 route, meanwhile, was at 287 Worldscale points on Monday, against 202 two sessions ago.
Worldscale points are a percentage of an underlying flat rate, which is set for each major route at the start of the year.

LSEG data shows that the global benchmark rate for a very large crude carrier moving oil from the Middle East Gulf (MEG) to Japan rose over 20% on Friday after the tensions broke out, and gained another 16% on Monday.
Prices jumped amid worries that Iran could potentially target energy facilities or shipping routes, or even close the Strait of Hormuz, if the current conflict – which began on Friday morning when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities and missile sites – escalates.
Lazard Geopolitical Advisory (LGA) has warned:
A temporary disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit chokepoint for 30% of seaborne oil and 20% of LNG, could push oil prices upwards of $120 per barrel and would likely require US direct involvement to secure safe passage for energy flows.
Even in the absence of a Strait closure, oil markets will see continued volatility as the risk of a disruption evolves.
Naval forces have warned that electronic interference with commercial ship navigation systems has surged in recent days around the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf, which is having an impact on vessels sailing through the region.
Lloyd's List Intelligence, which monitors maritime traffic, said that loadings of vessels in the Gulf continued over the weekend but tankers waiting to load in Iran were keeping a greater distance from the port.
Shares rallied yesterday in Europe, and in the US, following reports that Iran was seeking an end to hostilities and the resumption of talks over its nuclear programs.
But stocks are likely to fall back today, as hopes of peace talks fade, after Israel issued an evacuation order to residents of a large part of Tehran.
Donald Trump, who left the G7 leaders summit early last night, has denied that he cut short his appearance at the meeting to broker a truce between Israel and Iran.

America's retail sugar rush just hit a crash. US in-store sales dropped more than expected in May, weighed down by a decline in motor vehicle purchases. Retail sales fell 0.9 percent last month after a downwardly revised 0.1 percent dip in April, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said on Tuesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast retail sales would decrease by 0.7 percent after a previously reported 0.1 percent gain in April. The crash is closely linked to downward shifts in automotive sales. For months, shoppers had been ripping new vehicles off dealership lots to beat out cost increases from President Donald Trump's 25 percent automotive tariffs. But in May, that national rush turned into a whimper. Still, some consumer spending remained supported by solid wage growth. Sales last month were also held down by lower receipts at service stations because of a decline in gasoline prices. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs have raised fears over global growth, restraining oil prices. But hostilities between Israel and Iran have boosted oil prices. Unseasonably cooler weather likely also hurt sales. Federal Reserve officials prepared to start a two-day policy meeting on Tuesday. The U.S. central bank was expected to keep its benchmark overnight interest rate unchanged in the 4.25%-4.50% range while policymakers monitor the economic impact of tariffs and tensions in the Middle East. A 25% duty on imported motor vehicles and trucks came into effect in April. Retail sales excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services increased 0.4% in May after an upwardly revised 0.1% fall in April. These so-called core retail sales, which correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product, were previously reported to have dropped 0.2% in April. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the, economy slowed sharply in the first quarter, and could remain moderate in the April-June quarter. The Atlanta Fed is currently forecasting GDP rebounding at a 3.8% annualized rate in the second quarter. The anticipated surge will largely reflect a reversal in imports, which have fallen sharply as the frontloading of goods fizzled. The economy contracted at a 0.2% pace in the January-March quarter. Downside risks to consumer spending are rising. The labor market is slowing, student loan repayments have resumed for millions of Americans and household wealth has been eroded amid tariff-induced stock market volatility. The uncertain economic environment could lead to precautionary saving. "Past experience suggests the biggest price rises will come in July, though the full impact of the tariffs likely will emerge across the whole of the remainder of the year," said Samuel Tombs, chief U.S. economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. "That will weigh on growth in real incomes at the same time as a softening labor market will make people cautious with discretionary spending. Meanwhile, households no longer have 'excess savings' or strong growth in stock prices to spur them to spend."

Oil, currency and equity markets are treating all-out war between Israel and the Iranian regime almost as if it were a routine and contained Middle East spat, likely to blow over as so often before. It is nothing of the sort. Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu aims to overthrow Iran's clerical-military regime and talks openly of liquidating the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is a fight to the death. There is a very high risk that the US, Britain, and France will be drawn directly into the conflict – pitting the democracies against the coalescing confederacy of Iran, China, Russia and North Korea, and its disturbingly large tail of semi-aligned states. The hybrid struggle between two rival blocs resembles the treacherous landscape before the Thirty Years War in 1618, and the First World War in 1914. All it takes is hubris and a few more errors to set off this slow-burning fuse. Brent crude prices have already slipped back to $74 a barrel as I write. The market is in steep 'backwardation'. Futures contracts for autumn were trading near $66 on Tuesday morning – far below the average range over the last 20 years in real terms. Investors are implicitly betting that neither side will up the ante and attack tankers or export terminals in a region that supplies 18pc of the world's oil and 20pc of its liquefied natural gas (LNG). The logic of this conflict may force both to do exactly that. 'Energy is now clearly in the crosshairs,' said Helima Croft, commodity chief at RBC Capital Markets and a former oil analyst for the CIA. Israel has so far restricted its attacks to energy targets that hurt Iran's domestic economy. It has bombed oil and fuel depots in Tehran, and hit refineries in the South Pars gas field. It has not yet targeted the vast oil terminal at Kharg Island, which accounts for 90pc of Iran's crude exports and essentially funds the clerico-military regime. Ms Croft sees a clear and rising risk that Israel will cross this line, setting off a perilous chain reaction. You could read market insouciance as evidence that oil no longer matters as much as we used to think. The 'oil intensity' of global GDP has fallen by 60pc since the energy crisis of the 1970s.

DUBAI, June 17 (Reuters) - Qatar said on Tuesday its gas production at the South Pars field is steady and supply is proceeding normally, after the world's largest gas field was struck by Israel on Saturday, prompting Iran to partially suspend its production. Qatar, the world's third biggest liquefied natural gas exporter after the U.S. and Australia, shares the South Pars gas field with Iran. Iran partially suspended production at the field after an Israeli strike caused a fire on Saturday. "So far, gas supplies are proceeding normally. However, the ill-advised targeting raises concerns for everyone regarding gas supplies," Qatar foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said. "This is a reckless move... The companies operating in the fields are international, and there is a global presence, especially in the North Field," he said during a weekly press briefing in Doha. The South Pars field is located offshore in Iran's southern Bushehr province and is responsible for the bulk of gas production in Iran, the world's third largest gas producer after the United States and Russia. Critical energy infrastructure in Israel and Iran has not escaped unscathed from the first few days of the countries' conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump said he wanted a "real end" to the nuclear dispute with Iran, and indicated he may send senior American officials to meet with Islamic Republic officials as the Israel-Iran air war raged for a fifth straight day on Thursday.
