Supermarkets offering foreign-grown rice as Japan faces record prices

TOKYO - Japan's supermarket operators have been strengthening sales of cheaper, foreign-grown rice, offering another choice to consumers hit by rising prices and concerns about shortages of the country's staple food.
Aeon will start selling California-sourced rice on June 6 at its stores, mainly in urban areas, at 2,894 yen ( S$26) for 4kg.
Converted to the more common Japanese sales unit of 5kg, it is 3,618 yen, some 15 per cent cheaper than the average price calculated by the farm ministry of Japanese-grown rice at supermarkets nationwide in early May.
The company already launched a blend of US and domestically-grown rice in April. Rival food retailers Ito-Yokado and Seiyu have also sold rice from California and Taiwan, respectively, and seen solid demand.
Aeon said the decision to sell California's Calrose rice reflects consumer interest, saying they can no longer purchase rice as before due to higher prices.
'The price (of the new product) is affordable. By offering customers the freedom of choice, we hope that overall rice consumption will increase,' Aeon Executive Vice-President Mitsuko Tsuchiya said at a recent press conference.
Japan imports rice either through the government, which is obliged to purchase a certain amount from other countries under World Trade Organisation arrangements, or private companies, which pay a tariff to the government.
Aeon plans to acquire the rice via private import and sell some 14,000 tons over a three-month period.
Less sticky and with a more neutral taste than Japanese rice, the medium Calrose variety grown in California is suited for use in risottos, pilaf, stews and soup, Aeon said.
US Ambassador to Japan George Glass called the sale of the US-grown rice by Aeon 'historic' for American farmers, given Japan is a 'country that takes its rice very seriously, and it's probably the most discerning consumer when it comes to food quality'.
'Aeon has certainly gone big in its commitment to American rice and American farmers, and at a time when food prices are a concern for all Japanese, this launch couldn't come at a better time for consumers,' Mr Glass said. KYODO NEWS

PHOTO: REUTERS WASHINGTON – US negotiators will aim to restore the flow of critical minerals when they meet their Chinese counterparts for a new round of trade negotiations on June 9 in London, a top economic aide to President Donald Trump said. 'Those exports of critical minerals have been getting released at a rate that is, you know, higher than it was but not as high as we believe we agreed to in Geneva,' Mr Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, said on June 8 during an interview on CBS News' Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan. Rare earth flows became a new flashpoint in the testy bilateral relations in recent weeks. Top US officials including Trade Representative Jamieson Greer accused Beijing of failing to comply with the elements of the trade agreement brokered in May in Geneva by slowing down and choking off critical minerals needed for cutting-edge electronics. Mr Trump on June 6 described talks with China as 'very far advanced' and said that Mr Xi Jinping agreed to speed shipments of the critical rare-earth minerals. China said on June 7 it approved some applications for rare earth exports but didn't elaborate on the products' applications or destinations. 'I'm very comfortable that this deal is about to be closed,' Mr Hassett told CBS, without elaborating on the exact terms to be negotiated by the two sides during the London talks. 'We want the rare earths, the magnets that are crucial for cellphones and everything else, to flow just as they did before the beginning of April,' he said. US aerospace industry anxious as tariffs loom
[NEW YORK] US airlines and aerospace manufacturers insist they have no use for tariff protections, warning that the proposed Trump administration levies could eat into the healthy trade surplus the sector has enjoyed for more than 70 years. At the request of President Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's department launched an investigation on May 1 to determine whether to impose tariffs of between 10 and 20 per cent on civil aircraft and parts, including engines. The US industry those tariffs were crafted to protect swiftly let the administration know it was not interested. 'Imposing broad tariff or non-tariff trade barriers on the imports of civil aviation technology would risk reversing decades of industrial progress and harm the domestic supply chain,' the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) said in a letter addressed to Lutnick and obtained by AFP. But AIA and the Airlines for America (A4A) trade association voiced fear that far from helping, the tariffs would end up harming US manufacturers. No fix needed 'Unlike other industries, the civil aviation manufacturing industry prioritizes domestic production of high-value components and final assembly,' AIA pointed out. According to the organisation, US aerospace and defence exports reached US$135.9 billion in 2023, including US$113.9 billion for civil aviation alone. This allowed the sector to generate a trade surplus of US$74.5 billion and to invest US$34.5 billion in research and development, it said. The sector employs more than 2.2 million people in the US across more than 100,000 companies, which in 2023 produced goods worth nearly US$545 billion. In its response to Lutnick, the A4A highlighted how beneficial the international Agreement on Trade in Commercial Aviation (ATCA) had been by helping to eliminate tariffs and trade barriers over nearly half a century. 'The US civil aviation industry is the success story that President Trump is looking for as it leads civil aerospace globally,' it insisted. A full 84 per cent of production was already American, it said, stressing that Washington 'does not need to fix the 16 per cent' remaining. 'The current trade framework has enhanced our economic and national security and is a critical component to maintaining our national security moving forward,' it said. For manufacturers, the potential tariffs would act like sand jamming a well-oiled machine that has been running smoothly for decades, experts warned. They would also throw off balance an ultra-sensitive supply chain still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. 'Competitive disadvantage' 'To avoid the situation getting worse, we advocate to keep aerospace outside of trade wars,' Willie Walsh, head of the International Air Transport Association (Iata), told the organisation's general assembly last week. AIA meanwhile stressed that 'aircraft and parts are already in high demand and have a limited supply.' 'Integrating new suppliers and expanding capacity is complex, timely, and costly,' it warned, pointing out that finding suppliers capable of meeting rigorous safety certifications could 'take up to 10 years.' Delta Airlines also argued for sticking with the status quo, cautioning that the proposed tariffs 'would hinder Delta's ability to maintain its current trajectory.' 'If component parts incur tariffs upon entering the US, Delta will be at a competitive disadvantage to foreign competitors,' it said. 'The action would also impose an unexpected tax on Delta's purchases of aircraft contracted years in advance.' Delta chief Ed Bastian insisted in late April that the airline 'will not be paying tariffs on any aircraft deliveries we take,' adding that it was 'working very closely with (European group) Airbus' to minimize the impact. Delta pointed out in its letter to Lutnick that it currently had 100 aircraft on order from Boeing, and that it was demanding that its Airbus A220s be produced primarily in Mobile, Alabama. But if the tariffs are imposed, it warned, 'Delta would likely be forced to cancel existing contracts and reconsider contracts under negotiation.' AFP

BHG downsizes Bugis Junction flagship outlet as department stores face shaky future
[SINGAPORE] Department store BHG is downsizing its flagship Bugis Junction outlet – its last remaining permanent store – from three to two levels. This follows the March closure of its Junction 8 store, which will be replaced by home furnishings brand Nitori. Nitori will also take over the third-floor space BHG used to occupy at Bugis Junction. The scaling down of BHG's Bugis Junction outlet comes on the back of other store closures. Besides Junction 8, it has shuttered four stores here since 2022, in Raffles City Shopping Centre, Jurong Point, Clementi Mall and Lot One. It follows a series of other closures of large department stores here. 'BHG remains a tenant at Bugis Junction on Levels 1 and 2, and we continue to work closely with them to introduce new brands,' said a spokesperson for Bugis Junction. BHG declined comment. In February, BHG opened a pop-up store at The Centrepoint, which will operate until August. In 2007, it was acquired by Beijing Hualian Group, one of China's largest commercial chain retailers, and has operated under the brand name BHG for the past 18 years. Homemaker Brenda Thio, 53, said: 'It is sad that these stores that have been around for so long are either gone or downsized.' But she said she mainly shops online now. 'I hardly shop at BHG and have bought only pillows, bolsters or bed sheets there once every few years.' A broader trend of decline Large department stores here and worldwide have faced decline owing to increasing competition from online shopping, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Japanese chain Isetan will shutter its Tampines Mall outlet in November, after about 30 years. At its 2013 peak, it had six stores in Singapore. Its last closure was Isetan Katong in Parkway Parade in 2022. After closing the Tampines store, it will be left with two outlets – Isetan Scotts and Isetan Serangoon Central. Home-grown department store OG closed its Orchard Point store in 2022, after 18 years. Its remaining stores are in People's Park and Albert Street. Metro closed its flagship Centrepoint store in 2019 after five years, with two remaining stores at Paragon and Causeway Point. And two department store chains which used to be household names have called it quits. Robinsons, which still has an online store, shut its last physical store at Raffles City Shopping Centre in 2021, while John Little exited the local retail scene in 2017, after closing its Plaza Singapura outlet. Market observers said that with e-commerce offering a greater variety of products, competitive pricing and the convenience of home delivery, people are increasingly less inclined to visit large department stores. 'Today's shoppers increasingly seek personalised, curated and experiential retail experiences,' said Leung Sau Yee, senior lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic's School of Business. 'Traditional department stores, with their generalist, one-size-fits-all model, often fall short of these expectations.' Many department stores also rely heavily on mall operators to drive engagement, she said. Without distinctive products, brand curation or compelling in-store experiences, they struggle to offer shoppers a strong reason to return. Department stores have traditionally been anchor tenants in malls. But operating large-scale stores in prime retail locations, such as Bugis Junction, means incurring high rental, staff and inventory costs. As footfall declines, it becomes increasingly difficult to justify maintaining such expansive physical spaces from a profitability standpoint, experts said. Associate Professor Lau Kong Cheen, head of the Singapore University of Social Sciences' marketing programme, said department stores have been supplanted by large malls that offer a curated mix of specialised outlets. In short, malls are mega department stores. 'Malls house dedicated retailers for categories such as footwear, cosmetics, skincare, fashion apparel, accessories, jewellery and homeware,' he said. 'Each speciality store provides a focused brand experience that resonates more with today's discerning shoppers.' Professor Lawrence Loh, from NUS Business School's department of strategy and policy, said: 'Department stores cannot continue to be more of the same, providing huge varieties for all customers. If they are everything to everybody, they may end up as nothing to nobody.' From product-centric to experience-centric What could make the department store relevant again in a tough market? Prof Loh suggested merging the physical store with a digital one to offer holistic shopping experiences that are not found online. 'The 'touch-and-feel' in shopping is still valuable, but stores must give sufficient incentives to prevent the undesirable consumer behaviour of testing at stores and then going online to purchase elsewhere at lower prices,' he said. 'Department stores face the real challenge of being free showrooms for the low-cost e-commerce stores.' Other experts agree on the need to invest in omnichannel integration with a seamless blend of online and offline experiences, such as allowing customers to purchase online and collect in-store, or checking stock levels in real time, to compete with pure e-commerce players. Ethan Hsu, head of retail at real estate consultancy Knight Frank Singapore, said that technology such as personalised apps, fitting rooms that use augmented reality and artificial intelligence-driven inventory can improve efficiency and customer experience. They can also cater to modern preferences like sustainability, he said. In addition, he suggested community marketing activities that can build loyalty and differentiate stores from online retailers. These include supporting local charities, or hosting community events and cultural celebrations. Prof Lau suggested that stores frequently introduce thematic changes – for instance, cultural themes from different countries – to their product ranges. 'Just like museums and art galleries – they change their display by curating new exhibits to draw domestic visitors to make repeat visits,' he said. Exclusive collaborations with brands that have a limited presence in Singapore – including emerging international brands and local designers – could help, Prof Lau added. And stores can transform themselves into lifestyle destinations by integrating cafes with speciality in-house brews and food, and branded dining ware sold in-store, he said. Offering experiences such as personal colour analysis, cooking or baking workshops and food-and-wine pairings can make shopping more engaging, and cannot be replicated by online retailers, said Leung. She added: 'Ultimately, for department stores to thrive, they must shift from being product-centric to experience-centric, staying attuned to evolving consumer values and behaviours.'
