I-Bhd commits RM10mil to AI, robotics rollout across income-generating portfolio
SHAH ALAM: I-Bhd , the master developer of I-City, has announced an initial commitment of RM10 million to roll out artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics infrastructure across its portfolio of income-generating assets. In a statement, the company said the rollout, expected to be completed in 2028, will begin with the AI-Driven Enhancement at Mercu Maybank, a 33-storey corporate tower that serves as Maybank's alternate head office in i-City. According to the statement, the implementation will extend to other assets, including Wyndham Suites I-City, Wyndham Suites KLCC, Wyndham Garden, DoubleTree by Hilton i-City, Central-City Mall, I-City theme park, car parks, a data centre, and residential developments in i-City. "This rollout builds on the success of I-Bhd's pivot towards 'extracting value from the land', a strategy first introduced in 2024 to unlock long-term value from its RM10 billion gross development value (GDV) in i-City. "With over 50 per cent of the completed GDV made up of income-yielding properties, the group is now entering a phase focused on performance optimisation, operational scalability, and intelligent infrastructure,' it said. The statement added that the four-year technology roadmap is designed to embed automation into both internal operations and customer-facing experiences, including predictive maintenance, visitor flow management, and robotics-assisted service delivery across commercial, retail, and hospitality spaces. "The group's i-City SuperApp will serve as the central platform for integrating Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) capabilities across its asset ecosystem, with future plans for tenants to tap into shared infrastructure to optimise their operations,' it noted. The company also noted that it is currently in discussion with leading robotics and AI partners, including Unitree, DeepSeek, and Baidu, as it positions i-City as a scalable, AI-powered development. Meanwhile, chairman Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong said the group is not only addressing current demand but also future-proofing its assets by developing an intelligent urban ecosystem where performance, user experience, and data integration are aligned to generate long-term value for stakeholders. He added that the group has demonstrated its ability to generate recurring income and is now strengthening that foundation with intelligent systems designed to improve efficiency, adaptability, and long-term resilience across its assets. "AI and robotics are the next frontier in driving value from our ecosystem," he said. - Bernama

FBM KLCI erases earlier gains as lacklustre momentum prevails
KUALA LUMPUR: The prospect of a relief rebound subsided as Bursa Malaysia closed lower at the midday break, beset by the absence of positive catalysts to inspire investor buying. At 12.30pm, the benchmark index was down 0.84 points to 1,502.41, at odds with key Asian indices that have been pulling higher on the back of optimism over US-China trade talks scheduled for this week. According to reports, investors are pinning their hopes on a possible call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week. Meanwhile, domestic index heavyweights have continued to slip amid the lacklustre domestic outlook. Maybank dropped four sen to RM9.72, RHB fell eight sen to RM6.40, Nestle shed 56 sen to RM78.04 and QL Resources slipped six sen to RM4.34. The broader market was also negative, weighed down by 489 stocks in the red, as compared to 322 advancers. The volume was 1.49 billion shares changing hands for RM833.5mil. In Asia, major developed markets stayed positive, with sentiment boosted by the overnight rally on Wall Street on the back of a jump in Nvidia stock. Japan's Nikkei rose 0.88% to 37,775, China's CSI 300 rose 052% to 3,871 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.72% to 23,680.

Asian stocks fall on US tariff uncertainty; currencies set for monthly gains
SINGAPORE/HONG KONG: Emerging Asian stock markets fell on Friday after a federal court temporarily reinstated tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, while currencies showed a varied performance against a muted dollar but remained on track for monthly gains. MSCI's gauge of Asian emerging market equities fell 0.6 per cent. Stocks in Thailand dropped as much as 1.1 per cent to a more than one-month low and those in the Philippines fell 0.7 per cent. Seoul shares traded nearly 1 per cent lower. A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the most sweeping of Trump's tariffs, a day after a US trade court ruled that he had exceeded his authority in imposing the duties and ordered an immediate block on them. The world is still faced with the tariff reality and markets are taking a more conservative bet that much of Trump's tariffs would stay, according to Fiona Lim, senior FX strategist at Maybank. As a result, the US dollar surrendered earlier gains and remained subdued on Friday, poised for its fifth consecutive monthly decline. Regional currencies moved in different directions. The Thai baht and the South Korean won were down 0.3 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively. The Malaysian ringgit and the Philippine peso each edged 0.1 per cent higher. Trump's tariff reversals and rising concerns over US fiscal health have undermined confidence in American assets, prompting investors to shy away from the dollar and favour Asian currencies this month. The MSCI's emerging market currencies index has gained more than 2 per cent in May, its best monthly performance since November 2023. The baht has gained 2.3 per cent in May, its best monthly gain since September 2024, and the Singapore dollar is poised for a fifth consecutive monthly gain. The won has also jumped nearly 4 per cent this month, with Seoul officials confirming currency policy was on the table during recent talks with US counterparts, fuelling speculation of joint FX moves. While the Taiwan dollar, which was not trading on Friday on account of a public holiday, has logged a 6.5 per cent monthly gain - its best on record. The bumper performance follows a historic surge in the currency in early May on speculation that Washington has asked Taipei to allow it to strengthen as part of tariff talks. Taiwan's central bank has denied that Washington made any such request. All eyes are now on developments regarding the highly anticipated trade deals as the July 9 tariff deadline imposed by Trump approaches. "Any trade deal or signs of tensions easing could continue to spur unwinding of short USD positions and keep the USDAxJ mostly supported on dips in the near term," Maybank's Lim said. Markets in Indonesia were closed for a public holiday.
