I-Bhd commits RM10mil to AI, robotics rollout across income-generating portfolio

The Star04-06-2025
SHAH ALAM: I-Bhd , the master developer of I-City, has announced an initial commitment of RM10 million to roll out artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics infrastructure across its portfolio of income-generating assets.
In a statement, the company said the rollout, expected to be completed in 2028, will begin with the AI-Driven Enhancement at Mercu Maybank, a 33-storey corporate tower that serves as Maybank's alternate head office in i-City.
According to the statement, the implementation will extend to other assets, including Wyndham Suites I-City, Wyndham Suites KLCC, Wyndham Garden, DoubleTree by Hilton i-City, Central-City Mall, I-City theme park, car parks, a data centre, and residential developments in i-City.
"This rollout builds on the success of I-Bhd's pivot towards 'extracting value from the land', a strategy first introduced in 2024 to unlock long-term value from its RM10 billion gross development value (GDV) in i-City.
"With over 50 per cent of the completed GDV made up of income-yielding properties, the group is now entering a phase focused on performance optimisation, operational scalability, and intelligent infrastructure,' it said.
The statement added that the four-year technology roadmap is designed to embed automation into both internal operations and customer-facing experiences, including predictive maintenance, visitor flow management, and robotics-assisted service delivery across commercial, retail, and hospitality spaces.
"The group's i-City SuperApp will serve as the central platform for integrating Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) capabilities across its asset ecosystem, with future plans for tenants to tap into shared infrastructure to optimise their operations,' it noted.
The company also noted that it is currently in discussion with leading robotics and AI partners, including Unitree, DeepSeek, and Baidu, as it positions i-City as a scalable, AI-powered development.
Meanwhile, chairman Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong said the group is not only addressing current demand but also future-proofing its assets by developing an intelligent urban ecosystem where performance, user experience, and data integration are aligned to generate long-term value for stakeholders.
He added that the group has demonstrated its ability to generate recurring income and is now strengthening that foundation with intelligent systems designed to improve efficiency, adaptability, and long-term resilience across its assets.
"AI and robotics are the next frontier in driving value from our ecosystem," he said. - Bernama

George Kent slips into red in Q1

KUALA LUMPUR: George Kent (Malaysia) Bhd posted a net loss of RM8.01 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2025 (1QFY26), dragged by foreign exchange losses and higher operating costs. The company registered a revenue of RM37.6 million for the quarter, a 24 per cent increase from RM30.3 million a year ago, supported by stronger performances in both its engineering and metering divisions. George Kent said its metering division contributed RM32 million revenue, up 9.9 per cent from RM29.1 million previously, while the engineering division delivered RM5.65 million compared with RM1.16 million in the corresponding quarter last year. George Kent said it remains focused on executing its strategic priorities, including market diversification and the adoption of technology through its subsidiary GK SuperTech Sdn Bhd. It added that demand for its metering solutions continues to provide a stable base for the group, while it selectively pursues opportunities in infrastructure projects. Executive chairman Tan Sri Tan Kay Hock said a key highlight for the quarter was the group's strategic collaboration with Qingdao Topscomm Communication Co Ltd to develop Malaysia's first branded ultrasonic water meter. He added that the innovation will deliver highly accurate automated meter reading, help reduce non-revenue water and bring artificial intelligence-driven water management efficiencies to the market.

MBSB Bank inks RM1.3bil Islamic financing deal with Cypark

KUALA LUMPUR: MBSB Bank Bhd has formalised Islamic financing facilities worth RM1.3bil for Cypark Resources Bhd , making it the company's principal banking partner. In a statement, MBSB said the facility, which combines refinancing and working capital solutions, is structured to strengthen Cypark's capital structure, optimise cash flow and support growth. Cypark will also place funds into MBSB Bank's Sustainable Term Deposit-i, a product that channels deposits into environmental and social projects. 'This facility is a milestone in our own transformation as we align Islamic finance with national energy goals. By matching capital to long-term renewable assets, we are also shaping Malaysia's clean energy future,' MBSB group chairman Datuk Wan Kamaruzaman Wan Ahmad said. Cypark, Malaysia's integrated renewable energy and environmental solutions provider, is known for solar, biogas and waste-to-energy projects, including the country's first SMART Waste-to-Energy facility. With 400MW of installed renewable capacity, it plays a key role in Malaysia's decarbonisation. The financing marks a milestone in its Cypark 2.0 plan to strengthen finances, enhance operations and drive clean energy growth. Through this financing, MBSB Bank will refinance Cypark's established renewable energy assets in solar and waste-to-energy initiatives. Cypark chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said the refinancing of the group's debt alleviates a key financial exposure and positions the company to deliver sustainable growth while optimising shareholder returns. 'We value MBSB Bank not only as a financier but as a strategic partner who shares our vision for a low-carbon economy for Malaysia. Their confidence in our capabilities and commitment to the nation's energy transition have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. We look forward to working closely with MBSB Bank to deliver robust solutions for firm renewable energy supply to the grid.'

Apart from new contracts totalling RM66.8 mil, the group has secured three fast crew boat (FCB) contracts worth RM29.2 mil during the six-month period. These include a two-year extension for three existing harbour tugboats and a new five-year daily charter for three harbour tugboats. Its disciplined strategy ensures cash flow visibility and underpins growth certainty. Lucrative order book Looking ahead, Avangaad's management is executing a three-phase growth plan to demonstrate its prioritisation in delivering operational efficiencies, cost management and selective contract wins to reinforce the group's strategic presence as a trusted partner in both the oil & gas (O&G) and non-O&G segments. 'Currently in Phase 1, we're focusing on fortifying our position through new and renewed contracts alongside increased fleet utilisation while tightening cost management to maintain uncompromised operational efficiency,' revealed Avangaad's executive director Datuk Wira Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin. 'As we move into Phase 2 which is already in progress, we're set to expand and diversify by growing our fleet size and asset types, deepening port presence across Malaysia, and maintaining balanced earnings mix across O&G, non-O&G and marine logistics.' Added Mubarak: 'Moving forward, we shall regionalise and modernise under Phase 3 by entering selected ASEAN markets through both existing and new strategic partnerships. 'We also anticipate growth through fleet modernisation. This positions Avangaad as a key industry player in leading the transformation of marine sector, delivering integrated and sustainable solutions while advancing a clear decarbonisation transition plan.' 'With a blend of renewals and new long-term agreements across both O&G and non-O&G sectors, Avangaad is building earnings visibility, cash flow stability and a clear pathway for sustainable growth in the marine logistics industry,' added Mubarak.
