Block party on: Club pro qualifies for PGA Championship

Reuters02-05-2025

May 2 - Michael Block, the Southern California golf pro who shot into the spotlight at the 2023 PGA Championship with a legendary effort including a slam-dunk ace, has qualified for the 2025 tournament on May 15-18 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C.
Block, 48, beat the odds again this week when he tied for third as 20 of 312 club pros qualified for the major through the PGA Professional Championship, a four-day event at the PGA Golf Club's Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, Block carded rounds of 64-71-75-74 to finish at 4 under par. Tyler Collet of Vero Beach, Fla., won by 10 shots with a record-breaking 15 under.
"The goal this week was to kind of show my kid (caddie Ethan) the nuances of playing golf, and I think I did," said Block, who is from Mission Viejo, Calif. "Keep it in the fairway off the tee. Hit the green. If you miss the green, get up and down, make a conservative chip, and then be a decent putter. I think I showed him a good way to do it. And if I finish third, fourth or fifth, or whatever it is, as long as I'm in the top 20, I'm going to Quail Hollow and I'm very happy."
He will play in the PGA Championship for a seventh time but has made the cut only once, when he captured the attention of fans and media by turning the 2023 event at Oak Hill into a "Block Party."
Block tied for 15th with the aid of a hole-in-one at the par-3 15th hole in the final round, witnessed by the golf world including playing partner Rory McIlroy.
That Sunday, he also saved par with a clutch up-and-down from off the green and 8-foot putt at No. 18 to secure a top-15 finish and automatic invitation to the 2024 PGA Championship.

But the conditions still appear to be about as tough as it gets, with players aware they will need to do everything they can to keep the ball on the fairway in the year's third major. Videos circulating on social media show that a ball dropped from knee height into the rough is almost completely lost in the thick stuff. It's pure golf, no funny business about it.' Jhonattan Vegas, who finished T5 at the PGA Championship last month, even branded the rough as "unplayable". The USGA have been criticised in recent years for making the US Open courses too hard, but some fans enjoy seeing the top pros battle to make par - seeing it as more familiar to their own game. The rough on Oakmont stands at 5 INCHES tall, with the course trimmed to ensure that is uniform throughout all 18 holes. The course crew have detailed that they even mow the grass in a specific way to ensure it doesn't lay over itself and allow the ball to rest on top - making the rough is as punishing as possible. All 156 players will take swing at trying to beat the course when the action gets underway on Thursday. World number one Scottie Scheffler remains the favourite to lift the trophy after he earned his third major title at the PGA Championship in North Carolina last month. While DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, John Rahm and Ludvig Aberg are all amongst the top contenders for the title too. 8 Bryson DeChambeau explained how hard it it to play out of the Oakmont rough Credit: Getty

PGA Tour star says US Open course is ‘unplayable' as major change is made

Oakmont Country Club is considered to be one of the most challenging courses, with the world's best golfers having been given a terrifying glimpse of what awaits them at the US Open US Open bosses have made a big change at Oakmont Country Club just days before the third major of the season gets underway. But one PGA Tour star has claimed the course remains "unplayable" even after the adjustments. The US Open is shaping up to be an exceptionally tough challenge for the players, with many already expressing their concerns about the demanding conditions and obstacles at Oakmont. ‌ Since its inception in 1903, Oakmont has been widely recognised as one of the most formidable courses in the world. The legendary Pennsylvania club has hosted more US Opens than any other venue, with a mere four players finishing under par in the most recent event in 2016. ‌ The notorious rough at Oakmont is a key reason why so many golfers have struggled to master the course. In his latest YouTube video titled 'The World's Hardest Golf Course: Oakmont Country Club', defending US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau revealed that the grass areas had been allowed to reach five inches in height. 'This is the hardest this golf course could ever play right now,' he admitted. It appears, however, that officials have since taken steps to address the issue, with a number of greenskeepers seen shaving down the rough with lawnmowers. Yet, Jhonattan Vegas, who finished T5 at last month's PGA Championship, doubts the effectiveness of the trimming. He wrote on X: 'Good news guys. They are cutting the rough but it's still unplayable. Have fun.' Returning to the scene of his 2016 US Open victory, Dustin Johnson admitted that Oakmont hasn't gotten any easier to play at. He said: 'The course is just as hard as I remember, if not harder. 'I've played some hard courses, but it all depends on the conditions. This one's hard no matter what — soft, firm, windy, no wind.' ‌ While Justin Thomas is fully aware of the challenges that Oakmont poses, the 32-year-old claimed he was ready to face them head-on. 'I hope it psyches a lot of players out,' he said. 'I understand this place is hard. I don't need to read articles, or I don't need to hear horror stories. I've played it. I know it's difficult. "I also have faith that if I go play well and I'm driving the ball well and I'm hitting my irons like I know I can, I'm going to have a lot of birdie opportunities.' Xander Schauffele shared his enthusiasm for the challenge, stating: 'Maybe I'm just sick and enjoy the challenge. Something about it playing really hard. 'I think a good attitude goes a long way. It's obviously easier said than done, hard to keep a good attitude through the entire stretch of 72 holes, practice rounds as well. I don't know. I think they're a lot of fun.'

"I've got such a great team, I've got friends helping me out with all those messages and enquiries and said, 'hey, guys, forward those to Chris, my buddy, and make sure you stay focused on patients because that's what we're there to do in McCordsville, Indiana'. "It's been a lot of fun, some patients reaching out and fellow dentists. I feel like there are so many people behind me this week - Oakmont, Pittsburgh, dentistry - it's been fun. "Honestly, from a business perspective, that's not what it's about. We try to take good care of people, and if it brings us more great patients that we can help, awesome. "It will give us something to talk about maybe in and around the office."
