Pros react to Michael Block ludicrous theory about missing the PGA Championship cut
Pros react to Michael Block ludicrous theory about missing the PGA Championship cut Two years ago at the PGA Championship in Rochester, New York, club pro Michael Block became a cult hero by finishing T-15 and dunking an ace while paired up with Rory McIlroy. Safe to say a lot has changed since then. For one, Block seems to have faded from much of the public consciousness. For another, his game seems to have stayed back in Rochester. While competing at the PGA Championship in Quail Hollow this week, Block posted a truly dismal 15-over par to miss the cut — the fifth-worst score through two days. Bad tournaments happen. Golf is a very strange sport, after all. But it was Block's explanation for his poor play that has golf fans raising their eyebrows. "I love crowds," Block told after missing the cut by 14 strokes. "That's kind of the funny part is I wish there was a huge crowd on every hole because that's when I hit my shots. I really do. I always do. It's the weirdest thing. When there's no one around is when I hit my worst shots. That's something that I need more in my life is a bigger crowd. I just need to play a little better so it could happen. I could only imagine what would have happened if I would have been playing really good this week.' This is, of course, nonsense. Block completely imploded with an 82 on Friday that featured seven bogeys or worse over an eight-hole stretch. The fact that he was paired up with players like Erik van Rooyen and Mackenzie Hughes (instead of McIlroy or other big names) may have impacted the number of fans following him around the course, but the simple fact is the fans would've shown up for Block if he played better. To argue the lack of fans threw off his game is rather childish. A few other pros seemed to agree. Fans surely wanted to see Block succeed again at the major, but his disappointing weekend is in no way their fault.

Golf star Michael Block offers bizarre excuse after bombing out of PGA Championship
Michael Block has bizarrely claimed that a lack of fans played a part in his failure to make the cut at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. The 48-year-old, a club pro in California, enjoyed a PGA Championship fairytale in 2023, when he made a hole-in-one and finished in a tie for 15th. Two years on, however, Block's tournament was cut short after he finished round two on 15-over-par - 14 shots off the cut line. He shot five bogeys and four double bogeys in a disastrous second-round 82 and afterwards Block lamented his failure to draw bigger crowds at Quail Hollow. 'I wish there was a huge crowd on every hole because that's when I hit my shots,' he told 'I really do. I always do. It's the weirdest thing. When there's no one around is when I hit my worst shots.' He added: 'That's something that I need more in my life is a bigger crowd. I just need to play a little better so it could happen. I could only imagine what would have happened if I would have been playing really good this week.' Block lit up Oak Hill Country Club in 2023, becoming an overnight cult hero. But there were no more heroics at Quail Hollow. Heading into the weekend, only half a dozen players were below Block in the leaderboard. Rory McIlroy narrowly made the cut and on Saturday, TV cameras caught his frustrated reaction to the news that play was being delayed because of dangerous weather. McIlroy and Xander Schauffele were two of the big names due to go out early in the morning but organizers were forced to suspend play because of rain and stormy conditions around Quail Hollow. Masters champion McIlroy was headed toward the first hole for his 8:25am ET tee time when the horn sounded to signal play was suspended. The Northern Irishman was not too pleased - he slumped his head, turned around and grinned in disbelief while appearing to say 'f*** off'.

PGA Championship: PGA Tour Pro Rips Michael Block for Insane Excuse
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The 2025 PGA Championship has reached the stage where more than half of the field is headed home. Several PGA Tour stars are a part of that group, falling victim of the Quail Hollow Club. But one of the biggest stories at the PGA Championship involved not a PGA Tour player, but the PGA professional Michael Block. For anyone unaware of the difference, golf influencer Paige Spiranac cleared that up for everyone. Block not only missed the cut, but did so posting rounds of 75 and 82 to finish at 15-over. That was good enough for a 150th place finish. Afterward, Block had an unbelievable excuse. He essentially blamed the small crowd size as to why he struggled at the 107th PGA Championship while speaking to CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - MAY 16: Michael Block of the United States looks down the 10th hole during the second round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club on May 16, 2025 in... I could only imagine what would have happened if I would have been playing really good this week." I have been watching and covering golf for nearly three decades and have yet to come across a golfer referring to needing a crowd to play well. If anything, most prefer playing in a vacuum, hence the golf etiquette. PGA Tour pro Byeong Hun An must agree with that sentiment. He took to social media to take not a jab, but a killer uppercut at Block. "Wild somewhere up there with flat earth'ers," Hun An posted on X, formerly Twitter. Tell us how you really feel, Hun An. Michael Block, of course, became famous at the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. He took the golf world by storm, making a hole-in-one playing alongside Rory McIlroy. The PGA pro birdied his 72nd hole in dramatic fashion to finish in the top 15, which earned him an exemption into last year's PGA Championship. His everyman-type nature was endearing. He went out at a local bar prior to his final round and had drinks with the locals. It is hard not to like Block's persona. But to claim that the reason you didn't perform better was because of the crowd size reeks of amateur mentality. Then again, maybe that is why he is not on the PGA Tour.
